Martin Freeman in "Captain America: Civil War"

Recommended Posts

Yup, this appears to be for real.  Here's the word from Entertainment Weekly and directly from Marvel.  "An unknown role," huh?

Thank you for starting this thread, 221bbakerstreet_!  As Martina noted (before I edited her post), a conversation had started about half an hour earlier on the "Martin Freeman News" thread -- but I think you're right, this deserves its own thread, so I have moved the other posts over here.  The earlier posts mean that you are no longer officially credited with starting this thread, but we all know that you did anyhow!  :D

And welcome to Sherlock Forum!  :welcome:

Thanks, that was a nice idea Carol!!

I'm so excited for this to happen! I think Martin plays very "human" parts, so this is like a completely new side of him! Does anyone know anything more about this? Like who he is going to play?

According to Wikipedia, filming on this movie started in April.  I wonder if Freeman may be a last-minute replacement for one of the previously announced actors?

I'm very excited about this.  Really making me look forward to the new offerings in the Avengers movies!

I haven't seen any of these movies (yet).  Near as I can remember, my only contact with the Captain America franchise has been seeing the comic books on the newsstand.  So when I (inevitably!) see this movie, it'll be simply because Martin Freeman is in it.

I'll be like those people who saw Star Trek Into Darkness -- not because they're honest Trekkers -- but simply because some actor was in it.  Pathetic!  :D

You really should see the first two films.  Plus see the Iron Man and Avengers films... oh, and the 2 Thor films.  Okay, that's 8 Marvel films to catch up on before you see the 3rd Captain America.  So all go together.  Do not watch The Avengers until you have seen the others.

I can't talk.  I saw A Streetcar Named Desire and started watching Hannibal because... Gillian Anderson.

Oh the Thor films are great.  Well, they are all a lot of good, popcorn fun.  The first Avengers film is also great.

I have very serious doubts about all that! :D

You might actually like them... and you do get Tom Hiddleston in 3 of them... :) (the two Thor films and The Avengers)

I've been thinking with Benedict being Dr. Strange that I might have to catch up on the Marvel Universe (haven't watched anything but trailers for all the films out).  With Martin in the next Captain America, that pushes me even closer to doing so.

I happily admit to having watched Into Darkness only because of Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan (he was also the only part of the movie that I found enjoyable). The only thing that would make me watch a Captain America movie would be if they announced Martin Freeman was going to be Captain America. (Can you imagine that? Martin Freeman playing a beefed-up superhero? I sort of can't... But you never know. He's a fantastic actor, so anything is possible).

If Freeman has a significant role (which I assume he does), I will see this movie.

However, if the Cumberbatch fans could see STID without having watched (minimally!) all 79 episodes of the original series plus the original-cast movies, I see no reason why I would not be admitted to the theater this time without having boned up on Captain America and friends.

Well at least read some detailed synopsis of the first two films to that you'll know who's who and what's what because #3 is a direct sequel to #2 which had unfinished business.

Uh oh. Cap was never one of my favorites so I haven't seen the first two films. But obviously I MUST see this one!

If you like fun and funny action movies, the rest of them are terrific, especially the Avengers. Of course, I worship at the feet of Joss Whedon anyway, so I'm not exactly objective when it comes to the Avengers.

Are the Hulk movies part of this series? Hope not, cuz I haven't seen them either (for the same reason).

I don't think there is a specific Hulk movie that is part of the current franchise.  Mark Ruffalo has not made his own singular Hulk movie and from what I've read, Marvel isn't planning on doing one.   Hulk is quite entertaining in The Avengers, especially giving Loki his comeuppance.
