If he told Pseud that it was a limited edition of one, I could see that making extra copies would be unprofessional at best.  But otherwise, where's the problem?

Posted

It's not a limited edition, he's free to make and sell as many as he wants.

It's an unwritten rule that your reproductions should look like the original to the extent possible … unless it's marked as a variation, I suppose. No one's going to come after him if he does something else, it's more of a reputation thing.

Yah, limited editions … whole other kettle of fish. I'm not popular enough, I don't mess with 'em. In fact, I rarely, if ever, sell reproductions. Seems like people want the real thing (usually at reproduction prices  ) around here. It's a tough market at the best of times, and right now is hardly the best of times. Did I ever mention that's why I teach?

I see, so it's the green tones that you're questioning.  I've seen artists do a piece in several different color versions, though.  Maybe he could give it another name?

Sure, if he markets it in some way as a variation on the original, then no one has anything to complain about. If he doesn't, then you get someone like Pseud, who isn't getting what she thought she was paying for.

The whole business of prints can get tricky anyway, because most of what we casually call prints aren't prints at all, they're reproductions. The term "print" is supposed to refer to "hand-pulled" prints … that is, made by the artist, not by a machine, so that each one is unique, even if only slightly. But reproductions are produced by printing, so I personally think the confusion is understandable. So, all the more reason for artists to be clear what they're actually selling, imo.

I had another artist tell me one time that a woman came up to her at a show, really angry, because she didn't understand why this woman's prints cost so much more than that guy's over there. The artist tried to explain that hers were actual, hand-pulled prints, (ergo, in some sense, originals) and that guy's were mass reproductions of something he had painted in another medium. But the woman was convinced this artist was just trying to rip people off, and gave her an earful. *sigh* It was kind of stupid anyway, as there's no set prices for any kind of art, we all just make them up. (And yes, artists do tell each other lots of stories about how idiotic we think some "patrons" are .... :D)

If it's a reproduction, I suspect it's the 'fault' of the printer.

I'm not an artist, but I do some 'art-related' work and it drives me crazy how people don't understand the difference of hues, tints and obviously two very different color tones.

We have rental printer in office, and it used to be very good. It prints exactly like what we see in monitor which is very helpful for my work. Eventually the printer started to give problem; blackish, lines and the worst, color inaccuracy. Wait, that is not the worst, the worst is nobody else seems to have problem with that, multiple technicians we called also looked confused until I really have to drag them to my monitor, dig out whatever old print I had to show them how screwed up the printer was compared to what it used to. They don't really understand CMYK or when I told them that maybe something is wrong with the magenta cartridge etc etc. Eventually they got how different the printouts were, and finally changed the printer, but now, it is yellowish. I had tried to raise it up but gave up when the staff dealing with them was relocated and we don't have the replacement yet. I just try to make do with adjusting my image to achieve printout that I want, eventhough it screws up digitally.

So, if the artist doesn't use printing company that deals closely with graphic and quality printing, most probably they screw up with the result because of the printer. You are right, it could be as simple as a slider in photoshop, but unless he is familiar with the shortcoming of the printer very well, it would require multiple testings to get accurate result, but I'd think that is the obligation of the printing company and the artist could contest that, provided that it's indeed not a variation.

It's a very old poster, I suspect very few people would know how it should look.

He would have been using a professional printing company because I also had the option of buying it in other formats, on canvas etc. What annoys me is that he definitely looked at it, because he signed it, and the first thing I thought when I saw it was how green it was - it's obvious! Though I didn't realise how much until I compared it to the original.

No reply yet, but it's a bank holiday weekend so I wasn't really expecting there to be one. Plus he always seemed to take a few days to reply in our previous emails. I haven't even asked for a refund, I just asked for a replacement with the colours correct. If he offers a refund instead I'll be fine with that. If he offers neither I'll be very p*ssed off, and basically screwed since I didn't buy it via a shop there is no cover.

Good luck in there.

In my experience, asking for refund for many things requires nothing less than strategic real threatenings, which I did with reputable bank even when the mistake is obviously theirs. On the other hand, sometimes dealing with indivual is easier than corporate.

Hopefully you get replacement at least.

How is the law/goodwill/service attitude over there? Do you think it is likely he would do the things you expected?

If not, do you have some kind of customer protection orgsnisation or some kind of lemon law maybe?

Goodwill is usually pretty good, Law for this kind of thing, when it's directly between people and not via a shop... probably technically I could get my money back but frankly I don't have the time or the money to go that far.

Guys, I've had an answer, but just to prolong my torture the last part of the email is missing! It says 'having said that' and then stops. ARGHHH! Have had to email back and point out the last bit of the email is not there.

Out of curiosity, is this an issue in anyone else's accent? When I say thank you is sounds almost exactly the same as f*ck you. I just said it to my brother on the phone and there was a long pause as I think he tried to figure out which I'd said.

I haven’t noticed it. I’ve heard Tank You several times from foreigners who haven’t been raised around the English TH sound.

Posted

Yep, I've heard tank you. My thank you doesn't sound like that though. I think the 'k' is the most clearly enunciated part when I say it, the 'than' part just blends together as 'thuhn' so maybe that's part of it.

Ah, after a long email defending the terrible colour he says if I'm truly unhappy I can send it back and he'll try to get the colour adjusted. After all this I hoped he'd just say send it back and I'll refund it, and then I'd just be done with the whole palaver. To be fair I didn't ask for that though, I just asked for a decent colour print.

You're probably sick of this subject by now, Pseud, but I'm curious to know how on earth he "defended" the colors! ??????

Posted

He said my poster was likely faded (nope) and that the posters he's had printed privately would be different since they were not mass produced like the one I had. I had emphasised the fact I knew the colours would be a bit different but not that much. He reckons he's had no complaints from anyone else, and that his posters are closer to the original (riiiiight... so he chose to paint the sea green and give the sky a green tint?) but again if they weren't comparing it to the poster they wouldn't realise how off it was. Anyway, he agreed to take it back to look at the colours himself and get it re-printed if he agrees (dunno what happens if he doesn't). Tbh I'm fed up now and would just prefer a refund. So he didn't defend the colour as such, but he didn't agree it was off either.

My boiler is broken and it was way too chilly for the ice cold sponge bath I had to take this morning. I can't seem to get my hands to warm up again.

I’ve just realised I seem to be channeling an unholy mix of Sandy from Grease and Neo from The Matrix with today’s outfit... 😐

Now that would be a getup to see.

End of Grease Sandy rather than good-girl Sandy. Basically a lot of tight black and a lot of curly hair... but with long sleeves and boots bringing in the Neo element. I went to work wearing a cartoon jumper over the top but it got warm so had to strip to base layers.

Spider season has begun, just had a massive one on the stairs... and I noticed it when I'd just trod on that step and my bare foot was right by it.  🕷️ 😱

Got the plumber coming to look at the broken boiler tomorrow. I have the horrible feeling it's going to cost me a lot. :( Had an icy shower this evening, I think I was in there for about 30 seconds.

Argh, I'm so on edge waiting for the plumber I'm starting to feel sick. Dreading what he might say, and I hate having strangers in my space.

Just make sure his name isn't Moriarty.  Or Richard Brook.

There's no way that face belongs to someone evil.

Plumbing saga continues, still not fixed and now its going be a few hundred more on top of the few hundred I was already quoted. After they went I was tired and wrung out, decided to have a nap. I just woke up... fifteen hours later. My glorious weekend, where did you go?

Aw, Pseud, I'm sorry. Been there, done that, wouldn't wish it on anybody. Why can't life just be simple sometimes?

Oh god I just went out into the garden and I’ve grown the biggest courgette (zucchini) I have ever seen in my entire life!!! It looks like a marrow. I’ll post a photo when I’m back on my laptop... I can’t get over it!

LOOK AT IT! My hand looks tiny! It seems to have mutated into a marrow!
