I agree, Camper ... at least that's what Americans are taught in schools () that the first immigrants to this country were seeking freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. I apologize if I implied otherwise.

Also, I wouldn't say that all Christians think theirs is the only true belief. Many do, but some accept that other beliefs are also valid. Depends on the kind of person they are, and/or which sect they belong to ... same as people of any other religion. People are people no matter their faith, they don't all honor their faith (or lack of it) the same way. But I agree that it's difficult for me, at least, to understand how religion has come to be used as the justification for so much bloodshed over the centuries.

I will never understand why someone would kill in the name of a God.

I do understand the attempts of converting others - it's actually an attempt to save your soul. Been around evangelical groups long enough to get this, also my grandma was a Jehovah Witness and they do the same when they ring your doorbell, that's why I always treat them with respect.

What I don't get, it's why don't let it there. If they won't listen, it's their problem. They might go to hell (which I was told this more times than I can count by my concerned Catholic schoolmates), they think you'll go to hell, good. Why should a state prevent people from sinning, as long as they are free not to do so?

BTW, long time (partially still living there) I thought that people in Poland were okay with a secular state as, unlike in other communist countries, the Church was allowed a lot of freedom. Or maybe that's the reason, because the Church as a corporation kept it's structures and apparently they don't only want your souls, but also your money.

Mmm, nature? Human? ... No. thhuh.gif

Yeah, but then you get on a slippery slope ... if the state doesn't "prevent" certain sins, the argument becomes stronger for deregulating other "sins". We're already well on the way to "mainstreaming" prostitution ... and now we actually have some nitwit suggesting that sex with children shouldn't be illegal.

Next thing you know, it will be legal for consulting detectives to murder media magnates without a license. :p

Ah.. it's not now? XD

You forgot to add enigmatic in front of consulting detective and face licking fireplace pee-er in front of media magnates.

I have long stopped trying to understand.. human, actually. I think I understand religion fine. But I don't get when interpretations are tweaked, misunderstood and used as reason to harm others.

I know most, at least most of the main ones believe in good and peace but it's amazing how many lost in translation. And I also believe that good deeds don't differentiate, we should help fellow human being, regardless if they have the same faith or not.

I used to get questionable or dirty look when I don't answer what my religion is straightaway (yes, people asked that kind of question and they normally assume I am a Christian, well, technically), so when I told them I believe in none and everything, as long as the concept is kindness and peace, I don't care what attribute you wear. To my surprise, now I am getting 75% approval rating :p and most of them feel the same eventhough they are committed to certain religion. Of course there are those who are sure I am going to hell, which I don't mind, gotta shake hands with Sherlock and Moriarty, and most of my loved ones will be there too, if that is the recipe for hell. :)

Anyway, keep safe you all whenever you are. Election everywhere? I'm too jaded to follow more political news but I still read around here and there.

My goal today is to play any national anthem and nudge random people.

I forgot to vote yesterday.

But in my defense, it was an election for clerk of the court, and darned if I know why that's an elected official in the first place. Clerk of the court ... don't they just keep records? There must be more to the job than it sounds.

At any rate, my candidate won, so maybe it's just as well I didn't vote. Usually the people I vote for lose.

And I'm with you, VBS, I'm all in for any religion that preaches charity, peace, tolerance, equality, kindness, etc etc. Which is most of them. It's the people practicing the religions that create hell on earth, not the religions themselves.

This is what happens whenever I try to argue with Trump supporters:

What I find interesting is she's a virtual clone of Kellyanne Conway. Think Trump has a type?

This morning I was just reading how Trump now suddenly supports the environment and science. Since when? My god, the man is endlessly shameless..... And, to answer Mr. Hasan's question ... yes, Trump lies. Endlessly.

Macron and Le Pen won the first round of the French election, It seems the French have to choose between the lesser of two evils.

Posted

Oh dear, what's wrong with Macron? From this side of the world he at least sounds sane, but I haven't gotten much detail.

Posted

I don't know, i just read read that the choice between those two is the same as when America choose between Trump and Hillary.

Posted

Ah. Well, I thought Hillary would have made a good president, so it was no problem for me to choose between them. But I know people who had to "hold their nose" to vote either way, so I get what you mean. I just didn't realize the French felt the same way about Macron. Oh dear.

Me neither, I hope he wins but I doubt it

President Donald Trump on Thursday reflected on his first 100 days in office with a wistful look at his life before the White House.

"I loved my previous life. I had so many things going," Trump told Reuters in an interview. "This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier."

Poor Trump. Who knew that becoming the President of the United States would be harder than being a reality TV star?

I thought for sure he was engaging in hyperbole during the campaign, but apparently he really did think the president has the powers of a dictator. Welcome to the real world, Mr. Trump.

This is the kind of thing that bothers me most. If I ruled the world  this would be an impeachable offense:

The Trump administration has called for budget cuts of nearly one-third at the EPA and has sought to weaken protections for human health. For instance, the White House has proposed cutting funding and regulations regarding lead poisoning prevention and is considering rewriting regulations concerning smog.

It has already rolled back a law that prevented coal mining companies from dumping waste in streams.

Well when Trump was addressing the CIA, he did say:

The operative word there being "like". He's like a smart person, not IS a smart person. Although I don't think he even remotely resembles a smart person.

Colbert's probably not to everyone's taste, but this monologue simply made me feel better, partly due to the crowd reaction. Warning: he pulls no punches.
