Wooden and untalented? What is wrong with some people! Bollocks! :D

I suspect it may be largely a matter of "different strokes for different folks."  To someone who prefers a demonstrative acting style, a subtle performance might seem devoid of expression -- whereas to someone who prefers the subtle style, a demonstrative performance might seem downright hammy.

Thing is BC can be downright hammy if he wants to be - you have to overact to a certain extent in theatre. The fact that he does both equally well is a credit to him.

Yeah; I must admit I've not seen him in anything other than Sherlock, but I've seen trailers for his other films, and clips in interviews with him and stuff, and he seems really versatile, like he'd be able to pull almost any kind of acting style off. It's one of the things I love about him. And he's a brilliant impressionist as well :D

I am very sorry to bring up Marmite again, but I thought I'd mention that I have only had it one time, and spent five minutes later in the loo vomiting.

I know that there are a lot of people who are very sensitive to yeast and salft can cause the body to go into rejection mode.

Well, apparently so. But it was possibly one of the worst things I'd ever tasted in my life. No--it was definitely the worst thing I'd ever tasted in my life. People say it's an acquired taste, but if that's how I react to it then it's a taste not worth acquiring, I'm afraid... (I don't particularly enjoy vomiting.)

IMO that's an appropriate reaction to marmite (evil stuff).

Now y'all have got my curiosity up!  I didn't think Vegemite was all that bad, just way too salty, and it's reputed to be stronger than Marmite.  Seems to me I might have seen small packets of Marmite on the breakfast buffet somewhere during our travels -- if so, I'll have to try some next time!

I'm not impressed by all this hatred for Marmite; I need another Marmite lover to back me up and balance things out! :D

As far as I can remember, I've always loved it; I certainly remember eating it when I was about 8 or 9. But then again, I always ate strange things when I was a child; my dad has told me I used to be addicted to eating squid when I was a toddler :D

Posted

I've never tried it...never really heard of it until now. Could look in the local health food store. Got to admit, I have a low tolerance for salt, so it may not work, but I'm willing to try anything once.

I seriously would not buy an entire jar of the stuff just on spec, Fox -- that's how I got stuck with 99.9% of a jar of Vegemite!  You're still planning a trip to the UK sometime in the next few years, right?  It's bound to be cheaper over there, and you might even find it on a buffet, as I'm hoping to do.

Oh, dear.

This is my YouTube channel.  At the top is a "Benedict Cumberbatch Performances" playlist where you can find a complete one-act play (The Turning Point) but also you can find "Hawking. "  It's in 6 pieces but I first watched it this way and he's remarkable.  Benedict is beautiful and charming and articulate and erudite.  But mostly, he's the finest actor I have ever seen. And I'm old.

Also: here are all the episodes of "40 Something."

"Wreckers" is also on YouTube, right now.  That's been taken down before, also.  So maybe catch that one, first.

This is his big scene in "Atonement," in which he plays Paul Marshall, the creepiest character on film, IMO.  It's less than 3 minutes.  Don't miss it.  It's a perfectly cut polished gem of a performance.

They keep trying to post "Parade's End" but the copyright police always get it taken down.   Look around my channel and you'll find him as Will Parker in "Broken News" which is hysterical.  (Well, to me.)  If you can rent "Amazing Grace" he steals the whole movie out from under an all-star cast playing William Pitt the Younger from youth to death.

None of this includes his many books, voice-overs and radio plays.  There are many on my channel.

I love Marmite, but it is a strong flavour which I can understand people not liking. For me Vegemite (Which I also like) is actually slightly softer in flavour if anything.

I seem to remember fruit jellies in jars, (IE like jam but without seeds or pulp) being more popular when I was a kid, they seem to have all but vanished in favour of jams these days.

For Marmite fans--> :marmite:

You guys should all come over to England at the same time and I'll meet up with you and introduce you to more of our strange ways :D

Wow, Julia Mae, that's quite the comprehensive list of Benedict links! :D I'll have to watch them all at some point. If I'm honest nothing else he's been in has interested me very much; they've not been things that I would normally want to watch. But I wouldn't let that affect my judgement; I'm pretty open-minded and I'll always try something before I absolutely say whether I like it or not. Plus it's Benedict; you can't really go wrong with BC :D

I am LOVING that Marmite smilie :D How do I use it? Sorry, I'm a bit thick when it comes to technical stuff :)

Posted

There are basically two way -- well, three, actually -- to get at the smilies.  For any of the three methods, the first step is to position the cursor where you want the smilie to be.

The brute-force approach is to type in the code.  Unfortunately, I can't tell you the code for the Marmite smilie, because what you'll see is the Marmite smilie.  So I'll tell you the code except that I'll put equals signs in place of the colons -- it's simply

=marmite=

(except that you put a : at each end instead of the = ).  That method works even on cell/mobile phones.

Otherwise, you can click on the smilie face in the top line of the edit toolbar, and a row of smilies will appear at the bottom of the edit box.  There are too many to fit, so if you don't see the one you want, click on the right-arrow at the end, and you'll see more.

Some smilies don't show up well down at the bottom like that, though (and some of them don't seem to be listed at all down there lately), so to get a better look at them, click "Show All" below the row of smilies, and you'll get a little window that shows them to much better advantage.  Just scroll down till you see one you like, then click on it.  If you use smilies frequently, you can just leave the little window up and re-use it whenever you like.

Thanks Carol, but I knew how to get the other smilies, it was just the marmite one I couldn't figure out how to get because it wasn't on the list with the others. But thanks anyway! :)

No problem.  The info is there now, in case anyone ever needs it.  I guess the Marmite smilie is one of the ones that isn't showing up -- now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing that one at the bottom of the edit box.  If it's not on the window list either, maybe Tim hasn't finished installing it.  (I actually got at the code myself by clicking Quote on Tim's post, then toggling the "light switch" icon at the top left of the edit toolbar to kick me into code mode.)

You got a deal!  Next time I'm headed over your way (probably sometime during the filming for Series 4), I'll post a thread and we (whoever wants to) can make plans -- maybe meet for brunch at Speedy's?  :)

Well thanks again! I didn't know you could do the 'light switch' thing :)

That sounds awesome! :D I was going to say you'd have to tell me some time in advance, because trains from Leicester to London aren't cheap, and I'd have to stay in a hotel overnight, so I'd need to save up some money... but then I figured flights from America to England are most likely much more expensive :D So you'd probably create the thread a long time in advance anyway :)

Another thing to add to Benedict Must Watches is Stuart - A Life Backwards. BC isn't the only amazing thing about this tv film, Tom Hardy is another and you'll run the whole gamut of emotions from laughing to crying to being downright horrified at times. It is a brilliant, brilliant film and worth watching, even if it isn't exactly comfortable.

Have a pic...

And to bring this into line with the thread, I don't think it contains marmite, but it does include some very dubious sandwich type things, with beans and possibly brown sauce, at some point.

Last time Alex and I were over there, we did a very satisfactory day trip to Bristol from London.  By taking a fairly early train over and a late train back, we not only got cheaper fares, we had nearly 10 hours in Bristol.  I don't know how the Leicester trains run, but your area looks to be about the same distance from London.  If you'd just as rather save the cost of a hotel room, a day trip should be doable.

You're right; I suppose if I booked early enough in advance, the train fare would be quite cheap. And I probably wouldn't have to stay in a hotel if I went early enough, like you say :)
