OMG, people.  I broke my computer last night.  Like my H has taken it apart to deal with the fact that it kept overheating.  So, yeah... that happened.

PS2: there are two fantastic moments of Mycroft showing his emotions: after he receives the text from Jim, and when he yells at Sherlock in the plane. He also has a dragon face, and it's quite intimidating.

I thought Mycroft is full of emotion this episode.

His multiple angry face in Buckingham palace. Him being scolded at Baker Street. I love all.

Wish someone would collect all Mycroft's expressions.

Wish and you shall receive? Wish. Wish. Wish.

May not be all, but I'll see what I can do for this ep.   :)

I should also add this might take a couple days b/c I'm trying a new method which hopefully gives better quality gifs.

Oh forget all that... ain't nobody got time for Gimp right now.

Back to crap gifs... lol

OK, I might be a lying liar who lies... suddenly my blu-ray is not working on my laptop and Netflix streaming quality is rubbish.   :comp:

ETA:  And on that note... g'night... ;)

Thank you so much for the effort!!!  :grovel:

Good point about auto-complete.  If John has trained his well, it could work almost like what we see in episodes.  Not quite, though -- doesn't auto-complete require an extra keystroke to confirm?  Or is there such a thing as auto-auto-complete?

Yes I believe it needs another keystroke, unless it's a word that you always use.

Not sure though, I hate auto-complete with all my guts and disable it permanently on every device, because it keeps screwing anything that I type.

Two unimportant things for SIB:

- If John wants Sherlock not to work on Christmas, he should have hung mistletoes above every possible working areas.

- John suggested to Irene's Anthea that Mycroft should consider meeting him in cafe.

At the end, Mycroft actually met John in cafe, even though he might not have access to that info because the girl was not his Anthea.

I feel for you. My computer is on the verge of literally falling apart. Need to get a new one & need to get approval from my dad first as he's currently paying my bills.

Sherlock in a heroic pose, looking like young Caesar (might decide to get him a nice crest made of olive twigs later)

A post about ASIB - the author tried to make up the timeline of the episode

Ah, that's by Ariane DeVere's friend and proofreader Verity Burns -- bound to be well thought out, then.  I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I like her hypothetical reconstruction of Jim's phone conversation with Irene at the beginning of "Great Game":

JIM: Hello?

IRENE: Hello, Jim, darling. Is this a bad time?

JIM: Yes, of course it is. What do you want?

IRENE: I can give you Mycroft Holmes.

JIM: SAY THAT AGAIN!

IRENE: Right where you want him...

JIM: Say that again, and know that if you’re lying to me, I will find you and I will skin you.

IRENE: But... I need Sherlock.

JIM: Wait.

(He decides. Lets Sherlock go. Raises the phone to his ear again.)

IRENE: I have something. A very special something, which Mycroft Holmes will do anything to get...

JIM: So if you have what you say you have, I will make you rich. If you don’t, I’ll make you into shoes.

Dear Carol, are we talking about the same lady who in Ao3 is a Sherlock-John supporter from the get-go, namely 2010?

Her fan fiction is fun, but she has her own personal agenda, like most of us!

Posted

Yes, I assume it's the same Verity Burns who writes fanfic (some of which is Johnlock).  She's a good writer.

She's also a human being, so yes, I'm sure she has her own view of things -- as you say, we all do.  If I read only those articles written by people who agree with me 100%, I'd get pretty tired of reading my own writing!

Dear Carol, since I have no idea what your pseudonym in that place is, I have not found any of your fan fiction, although I have already read Boton's stories and sfmpco's stories. I would never dream of doing any creative writing myself, confining my writing to research papers and student projects, so Ao3 is a place of mystery and exploration. 90% of all those fan fiction writers seem to be female and pretty sex-oriented at that, but that is to be expected, given the actors chosen.

A million thanks J.P. for sharing that great post about ASiB by Verity Burns. It gave me some really good answers (answers i wanted to hear, at least) about what really went on in Sherlock's mind re Irene Adler. It sickened me when everyone from Mycroft to John was treating Sherlock as though he were some lovelorn teenager throughout that episode. I want to believe Sherlock is truly above such weaknesses and that he really sincerely means it when he says love is a disadvantage. For the same reason I hated his rhetorical question to Mycroft at the morgue, "is there something wrong with us?" Sherlock Holmes doubt himself??! Sacrilege!

Boswell, I didn't see it as doubting. I cannot really say precisely what it meant to me, but it wasn't doubt. It's that both Holmes were quite convinced about their superiority over the average people. Sherlock had probably a lot of time for thinking about sentiment, and maybe he thought that even though caring is not an advantage, it is something they both lack, and it separates them from other people. Not necessarily making them worse, but different, and not what's considered a norm.

PS: Have you read another ASIB interpretation thread HERE? It's a bit long winded and has few side branches, but I think the theory makes sense nonetheless.

Oh yes, credit for finding and posting efforts.

The images made my day.

I second J.P, don't think it's doubt.

Can't speak for others, but it's quite common to find myself in situation where I take different interests, make different choices or have different opinions. Little question 'is there something wrong with me?' does pop up but then 'Naaah. I don't have to be like that just because the rest do.'

Improper explanation, I know.

But it gives good feeling at the end that I don't really have to like THAT ugly vase just because everyone loves it, for example.

Little bit delete scene that I wish they put in:

In Buckingham Palace:
:watson: But it's Sherlock that you want - what am I doing here?
:bart: (replacement for Equerry) I did wonder myself, Mycroft.
:gatiss: My baby brother is a genius in his chosen field. But in this case, we need a genius with a conscience - which, typically, my brother has outsourced.
:watson: Oh great, I'm Jiminy Cricket.

The Holmes brothers both laugh - a rare moment of bonding.

:gatiss: Actually, that rather works.
:sherlock2: It does, doesn't it?

Imho, the scene is great for so many reasons:

- Mycroft calls Sherlock baby brother in front of the Equerry and John. Younger siblings hate that.

- Mycroft admits that Sherlock is a genius in his field.

- Mycroft recognizes Sherlock's lack of conscience and recognizes John is the one balancing him.

- There is a way to outsource conscience, people!!!  :cowdance:  :sofa2:

- As acknowledged in the script itself, it's a rare bonding moment for Holmes Brothers. Again, if there ever lack of reasons to love John Watson, being able to stand the two brothers proves that he is special human being; appreciate intelligences although finding himself at the frustrating ends many times.

Ah that's a beautiful analysis...stuff like this really makes my day! Yes it makes a lot of sense, esp when taken in conjunction with the probability that Irene's move of asking for John's 'help' with recovering her phone - when upto that point she had been acting like John didnt even exist - would have been too transparent to Sherlock as being part of her bag of tricks.

Posted

And "is there something wrong with me?" is the very definition of self-doubt, so any other spin that can possibly be put on that unholy line from Sherlock would belong in the realm of dark manipulation by Sherlock to make his big bro believe he's suddenly getting in touch with his emotional side (actually Mycroft already seems to be believing just that, what with his offering Sherlock a cigarette and being all consolatory, a scene which i absolutely disliked)

But it also shows, that Mycroft has a heart. Which - in case of that alternative interpretation - wasn't an advantage for him.
