... we are going backward now, seeing a number of eradicated diseases rebound. Polio is making a comeback.

If you're talking about Asia and/or Africa, the comeback may be due (either wholly or partly) to this (from Wikipedia page that J.P. linked to above):

The only human vaccine to have caused any significant number of infections is the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which takes advantage of the contact immunity from shed vaccine virus to amplify the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns. However, under conditions of persistent circulation in undervaccinated populations, reversion mutations that reactivate the virus can give rise to disease-causing circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) strains,[18] and this vaccine is no longer used in developed countries. However, the OPV is still used in Asia and Africa, leading to a small number of vaccine-induced polio infections each year.

Are kids in developed countries still being given the Salk vaccine?  If not, there's a possibility of unvaccinated travelers getting polio on a trip abroad, then bringing it back to their largely unvaccinated home country.

I'm still waiting for my 5G enhancement.

You ordered a new phone but it hasn't come yet?  Or you have an upgraded phone but the local network doesn't support it yet?

Hi Carol,

You always being helpful makes me feel childish sometimes.

I was...ummm... talking about those chips and 5G something you are supposed to get when you are vaccinated.😁

To top off a crappy year, one of the three locations belonging to the funeral home I work at had an electrical fire last week.  While we're waiting for repairs, the funerals that would normally take place at that building have been shuffled over to the one I work at, indefinitely.  Which means my workload has just doubled.

I'm sorry Artemis, I hope this situation doesn't last long. Anyway, can I ask you what the most common songs being played at a funeral are? Nobody died, I'm just curious.

Did the fire spread, or was the damage pretty well confined to one spot?  (Or -- dare I ask -- is there concern that more of the wiring is substandard?)

Thanks FL!  That’s an interesting question, and the answer is there aren’t any!  I can honestly say I’ve never heard the same song played twice, with the exception of a few hymns (namely ‘Nearer My God To Thee’).  Church funerals might see more repetition, but at the funeral home, song choices tend to be highly personalized by the family of the deceased.

The most memorable for me was the funeral of a man who was known for his love of rock and roll.  Throughout the funeral we played a list of his favorite rock songs, chosen by the family, and it was a very fun and upbeat atmosphere.  You could really feel the spirit of the man.  At the end of the funeral, the very last song played was this one:

The acoustics in our buildling are very good, and the song resonated so beautifully.  It was so pretty, and the tonal change was so drastic, it just stopped everyone in their tracks.  No one talked or ate or moved, especially during the last minute or so.  We all just listened.  It’s one of my favorite moments from working there.

My second favorite song choice was this one:

So pretty, and it got a lot of people emotional.

If my grandparents ever pass away, I want to play this song on their funeral.

I thought that’d be a great song for a funeral when I heard it too.

Thankfully it was confined to the garage.  But the entire building stinks of it.

It is a very old building.  But I certainly hope we won’t have any more problems like that.

Like Artie says, it used to be mostly religious songs (Mom told me that in the small-town church back in her day they used to play "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder" a lot), but now it's often more personalized.  When Mom's sister died, my cousin had the organist play "The Tennessee Waltz" because my late uncle was from Tennessee.

Alex says when his time comes, he wants "Into the West" and other music from Peter Jackson's Tolkien movies.

I could just about count on it when I was in college. I'd be fine right up till a major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas especially), but then I'd get some kind of flu, and spend my holiday break in bed.  By craning my neck, I could see the dining room table, where everyone else was enjoying a festive dinner -- still haven't decided whether that was a plus or a minus (considering that I was being served tea and dry toast).

In other words, you have my complete sympathy!!!

So there is this dish in Belgium that's really popular and it's called vol au vent, here is a recipe in English if your curious   https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetables-recipes/creamy-mushroom-vol-au-vents/. Anyway, I don't know why but in three restaurants I ate it in the span of a year served it with a sauce that's usually reserved for fish and I hate it. The addition of the sauce makes it taste awful, stop adding the sauce for crying out loud!

Thanks for the warning!  If I'm ever thinking of ordering vol au vent, I'll be sure to ask do they serve it with fish sauce.  I mean, seriously, some little detail like that can really make or break a dish.

That was me as a kid.  I'd get a terrible flu or strep throat or something on either Thanksgiving or Christmas, every year without fail.  It didn't stop until I reached young adulthood.  It still does happen once in a while, but not every year anymore.

I'm sorry you were sick for Christmas, FL!  I hope you are feeling better now.

I was always ill in school holidays and even now as an adult, I seem to follow the pattern of many of those who work in school-

always ill during holidays.

I was only glad I got my Italian holiday feeling well this year, for a change.

Unfortunately, my poor daughter-in-law is really unwell.
