Episode 1.0, The Unaired Pilot (60-min. "Study in Pink")

Mmmmm... nope. :D

XD

Actually I don't think I would continue watching if the pilot was really aired in place of SIP.

He looks a bit too Justin Bieberish and not very.. I don't  know how to put it.

I like SIP's awkward madman rude guy, with ridiculous hair and pale skin. He is different from what I normally consider attractive, but somehow he is damn attractive because he is...weird and unusual.

So..short answer.... nope, too. :p

As much as I like to leer at him in the pilot, I think I would have found if off putting once the novelty had worn off. Early thirties seems perfect age really.

But, but... we could have watched him mature into the early thirties!!! Nobody loves me....

Imagine his more mature face in that hair and skinny jeans, it would look like he has mid-life crisis! :p

Oh, don't cry...crushing hopes and dreams is how we love around here. :p

The rate it's going he'd be playing a thirty year old in his sixties ;)

Nooooooooooooooooooo...!

I want to hear him before I am going deaf..!

Talking about him being young, has anyone seen the clips of him playing Hugh Laurie's son in Fortysomething? Looks like a very unfunny sitcom but it's still sort of fascinating.

I actually made myself watch the whole thing just because BC was (barely) in it. I agree it wasn't that funny, but it was more of a dramedy than a comedy, and as such it wasn't really that bad either. I was glad it was a short series, though. I'm surprised Ben didn't become a teen idol right then and there, I thought he was adorable.

God, you're more dedicated than me I don't think I could have watched all of it. Enjoyed leering creepily over the clips though  :naughty:

Well, it helped that I like Hugh Laurie. ;)

Hubby rewatched The Pilot the other day, and says he thinks the 60-minute format would have worked fine, it would merely have been different.

For one thing, he says, maybe they wouldn't have felt the need to come up with "all that nonsense" for Series 3 and 4.  (I assume he means stuff like ninja!Mary.)  What do y'all think?

I love the pilot and certainly think every true fan should watch it!

I did understand the team's reasons for re-shooting.

1. Paul McGuigan, who for me, does everything better.

2. It would have been tacky just to stick on an extra 30 mins, plus I do like the 90 minute mini-series format. It does give so much more scope.

3. Personally for me the colours were a bit brash in the original and I also didn't like the Cabbie attempting to 'see off' Sherlock there..

4. On a practical level, every member of the cast or crew fell down the step in the original flat!

I am a massive fan of Mary, so no complaints from me, over the team's decisions regarding her.

Their show, their choices. We've fan art/fic/vids for people to make their own choices,to reflect head canon.

To me, the plot looks like, dunno how to put it, cheap in comparison - the better camera quality they had later certainly paid off. And that shot of Sherlock against the moon is a bit tacky. Full agreement with your husband regarding "all that nonsense", though.

See, I'm with Steven on the moon scene...I love it.

He said that nobody else did.

I love how BBC Sherlock panned out, no complaints from me.

I believe in complete artistic freedom.

Don't think anyone here has spoken out against artistic freedom. Artists are free to create, just as their audience is free to like or dislike.

Right, I was merely wondering how the ensuing series might have turned out if they'd simply proceeded from the-pilot-as-shot.

While I agree regarding camera quality, McGuigan's contributions, and the pilot's 221B, there was a lot that I liked about the pilot.  For example, Sherlock actually answers his own question about "who hunts in a crowd?"  In 60 minutes, they needed to stay more focussed.  So I suspect that Hubby may have made a valid point -- though of course that could be seen as either a good thing or a bad thing (or some of each).

But if Jeremy Brett & Co. could do their wonderful Holmes in 60 minutes, it seems like our guys could have too.

Not saying they should -- just that they could have, and it could still have been good.  After all, their first thought was to do a 60-minute show.  It was the BBC's idea to expand it.

Yes, but I thnk they were glad as it gave them more scope.

Each episode is like a little movie.

I personally have never watched any of the episodes and thought " well it was ok, but could have done with being half an hour shorter."

But possibly I am in the minority on that.

Me neither, except for possibly the pilot (which I liked better in some ways, worse in others).  But it's hard to compare what you've actually seen to what hasn't even been filmed.

And who knows -- if they did edit an existing episode down to 60 minutes, they might do it by removing all my favorite parts!

It's just that -- well there are some bits that I could happily do without.
