Episode 1.0, The Unaired Pilot (60-min. "Study in Pink")

Like the two James Moriarty characters?  You would think characters names would be one of the easier things to keep straight.

Maybe that's why he kept Lestrade's name as just "G." -- easier to keep straight (and hard to confuse with "James").

Oh Carol,

I do love you above all amphibian princesses! Yes, it's in the "Cardboard Box" , which starts by his showing off like the character in the Gold Bug of Edgar Allan Poe, how he can interrupt into Dr Watson's thinking, and you made me realise, once more that the originals are gold nuggets or gold dust, compared to the pale imitation of the modernised, clingy, emotionally unstable Sherlock!

As for the two Moriarty brothers, Professor James and Colonel James, ACD had two fellow students named Moriarty, and his brother James helped him a lot in his early life! Were Indiana not half a world away, I could use a decent transporter right now and give you a thankful hug, as it is :hugz:!

So anyhow, I'm curious to know where the "Gregson and Lestrade have been combined" idea came from.

I thought it was because both Gregson and Lestrade appeared in Scarlet, but only Lestrade in Pink.

I got the idea because I read it on the internet somewhere (maybe even here!).  lol  I dunno if I would have assumed that myself, or just thought they axed Gregson?

Well, if there's no specific evidence (e.g., a statement from Moftiss) for combining the two, it seems to me like they just decided to concentrate on Lestrade, since he is, after all, the best known, especially in film adaptations.

I suppose that could be considered the same as combining the two, and from there it'd be a short leap to assuming they'd gotten "Greg" from "Gregson" -- but since they have mentioned Gregson as an independent entity at least once (in "Reichenbach"), I prefer to think that they just don't talk about him much.

Oh, I don't know, I sort of like the look of "boy band" Sherlock. Maybe in the next incarnation.............

This is really subtle, and I feel ridiculously pedantic saying it, but does anyone else think Sherlock's accent is slightly different in places? It's a very small change, but he says certain words in more of a 'London' accent, not so enunciated. I notice it most in the taxi when he's going through his deductions with John, I'm not sure if it's just because the pilot is not as polished, if it's a conscious decision that was later dropped, or if I'm imagining things. I'd be interested to know if anyone else noticed anything, though it's such a small shift I don't know if it would be noticeable to people from outside the UK...?

Here's an example, about 12.45 mins in:

"Your limp is really bad when you walk but you don't (drops the 't') ask for a chair when you stand like you've forgotten about it (merged together 'abourit')"

I notice a subtle shift in the way he talks between the pilot and the aired version, but my ears aren't fine-tuned enough to tell if it's something to do with accent, or just acting choices. His delivery seems a tiny bit more formal and mature in the aired version, is what I notice.

I do notice BC dropping consonants and slurring words together sometimes, but I've always attributed that to a combination of the speed at which he has to deliver his lines, and his slight lisp. I'm afraid I wouldn't know a London accent from ... er, any other English accent! I mean, I can tell there are different accents, but I can't pinpoint an English person's place of origin by their accent.

I do know (thanks to my sister the Brit at heart in comparison to our approx 1/16 sliver of actual British ancestry) that there is somewhere in Southern England (and I don't remember where) where the accent is similar to but different from an Australian accent that I have a hard time telling the 2 apart at times.

I notice that in American films; like Bridesmaids for example, Matt Lucas and Rebel Wilson are supposed to be brother and sister but to me they sound obviously different and Rebel Wilson doesn't sound remotely English. It must have been close enough to pass with American audiences though, so maybe Matt Lucas' accent is the type your sister was talking about?

I believe I've herd them say that between the pilot and Series 1, they decided to make Sherlock (the character) "more Victorian" -- which presumably accounts for the more formal accent.

I agree there is a very rare slip on the accent though in general Benedict Cumberbatch excels at different English accents- I loved how for TAB he took the poshness up about 5 notches- I have to wonder if only being posh yourself can prepare you for that level of plumminess in an accent.

I dated a guy once who was training to become a radio announcer. His normal accent/diction was very backwoods Southern drawl, but his "on air" voice was urban (and urbane) Ivy League. So I think that stuff can be learned, although some actors are certainly better at it than others.

I don't know, it's similar enough to his natural accent it's probably pretty easy to ham up. I mean I talk one way normally, but I can ham up my accent into something more pronounced and markedly different if I need to. Obviously Cumberbatch is good at accents in general but I don't think being posher is much of a push.

I think it's interesting how much older he seems in SIP compared to the unaired pilot. There can't actually be that much time between them, it's impressive the difference that styling and manner can make, because he seems more assured and confident he immediately seems older.

Have you seen the original promo poster? (I think it's legit.) Really weird, they kind of look like a '90s brit pop band. Sorry it's so big, I don't know how to resize it :S

Oh yeah, that's a favorite of mine. I kind of wish they'd kept that look for awhile, actually; I like the idea of a 20-something Sherlock. Fits his behavior better too. I think I'm in the minority, though.

I like his cat eyes but although it looks okay in the pilot, admit it, that hair doesn't fit Sherlock season 3 and beyond, as BC's face has matured quite a lot.

Admit it! Because we are running out of topic..!!!

Annnd discuss, lol :)

I think he looks incredibly attractive in the pilot, and strangely tall, especially when he leaps off of the sofa to go and look out the window after John gives him his phone. I prefer his more assured manner in the real pilot. I think they could have kept the hair for the first season, I wouldn't have had a problem with that :D
