Add.. just to be more nerdy.. (I am copying something at work and waiting drives me nuts)

It's possible to crack the codes even if they don't have the information, but it would take however longest time they don't have. To crack it manually though, could be close to impossible with too many human errors. It needs very discipline elimination method and cross analysis, that can get really confusing because it would be complex. Like he said, machine is needed, as it can work systematically and accurately.

What they need to do is to find the constant factor in said language, testing probabilities and cross elimination. It has to be analyzed from the uniqueness of the language.

For example, in English there are less words with two alphabets. So there are less probabilities to be studied. From there you probably can make a good guess and get a vowel cracked.

A word almost always contains vowels, and higher probability that vowels are located on middle of the word.

When there are two same codes in the middle of the word together, the probability that they are 'e' or 'o' is higher.

Cheer, beer, drool, feet, foot, and go on..

There you get another vowel.

(Don't remember seeing word with aa, ii or uu but that's my limited knowledge..)

And so on..

Oh, dear, oh dear oh dear! Here we go, back to Computing 101, throwing switches for 1 and 0 to make up a computer language ( shades of Fortran, like Hamlet's father's ghost) arising to haunt us!

 Gosh, we might be the last ones to actually know what Fortran means (not that I have a clue about using it)

You know, at the moment when I started to read about TIG, my first reaction was :wtf: , because I was taught over and over again that "we" (Poles) have broken Enigma - I don't remember ever hearing Turing's name connected to it. (I knew about him because of Turing Test and Turing Machine). Because it wasn't mentioned in any movie review or article I saw, I really had to check the main facts, for my world to become okay again. ;)  Well, both is right, there were just two phases of the process and I think Germans have changed the system (maybe because someone wasn't able to keep from rescuing all people they could - still have to look it up). So far for The Truth  - everyone is highlighting their own achievements.

PS: ETA = edited to add.

Finally came around to watch it. What a nice acting done by BC. You could see he changed his posture, his face, and his voice is so good. Very well-acted!

The story of course made me sad, but I didn't cry, but I feel why BC sounded angry over the way Alan was treated, in press interviews and stuff. But it was unknown for soo many years the real accomplishment of Alans work. It's sad he commited suicide, I wish we knew the reason why.

There are actually a couple of perfectly plausible (to me) conjectures that it was not suicide:

Conjecture #1:  As shown in the movie, Turing used cyanide in his work, so he might have accidentally ingested some.

Conjecture #2:  Again, as shown in the movie, at that time in the UK (and many other countries) it was illegal to be what you might call a practicing male homosexual.  Once Turing's sexual orientation became known, the government could have considered him to be a huge security risk, and might arguably have assassinated him.

If it's true, wow very F up, but who say we live in tender world. I don't know which one is worse though, that, or chemical castration.

Whatever the cause of his death was, the officials seemed all too eager to wrap it up quickly.  They noticed a partly-eaten apple lying around, and said that he'd probably put the cyanide on the apple -- but they never tested the apple for cyanide!  They just labeled it suicide, end of story.

I personally consider accidental poisoning to be the most probable explanation, but perhaps the officials were hung up on the idea that his death must have had something to do with his being a homosexual (like homosexuals don't have accidents just like anyone else).  I've seen and read interviews with people who knew him, saying that even during his "castration" (which had lasted only a few years), he was carrying right on with his work, and seemed to be bearing up well.  And that was well in the past by the time he died.

If he had lived in current time, imagine what a hero he would be.

It's such a sad story for someone as brilliant as he is.

(Current time when computer had not been invented. However, he has very advaced intelligence he would be great at something else).

So last year I bought TIG when it came out on video and it had something connected with STARZ the US premium cable movie channel.  1.5 weeks ago I finally see TIG show up in the premium movie channel section and is it on STARZ as I expected it to be? Nope (pop the P as you wish).  It's on Showtime which is a different premium movie channel company all together.

Connect with STARZ via Twitter and find out what's going on with that.

I get essentially all of the movie channels so I've seen it in whole or in part just about every time it's been on. Plus on demand twice. And it's not like I don't own the DVD.

Sorry if I join this discussion only now, but I love that film!! I saw Benedict acting for that time in that film and I fell in love with him. Oh he was fantastic. Also the film was fantastic! And the most impressive part was the ending, I cried a lot!!
I got totally involved in the story and I felt all the emotions of the characters, expecially Touring :)

Never be sorry for joining a discussion! The more the merrier! Glad you liked the film. Are you saying that was the first time you saw Benedict in a film? He's amazing to watch, isn't he? Have you checked out some of his other films yet? (I have to admit, as much as I liked the Imitation Game, I still like him in Star Trek better. Khhhhaaaaaaannnnnnn! )

Khan? Where??? Where???

Hey! Have you accidentally found a way to summon me?

No Amber, it's not too late to join a discussion. I like this movie too, but will not watch it again because it makes me sad, and I can't really say that for other 'human' movie (dog movies always get me though that's why I stay far away from them now).

What makes it sadder it's based on true story. Yeah, I know adaptation tends to be dramatized, but still, the main part is mostly true.

It makes me think a lot.

Never checked it out, did BC get something from this? I thought he deserves an Oscar or something.

Oh, yes, he's so....so....perfect!!

Some months ago I watched "War Horse". It's a drammatic film, very beautiful. Ben has a secondary part and he acts only a few minutes, but he's absolutely the best of the actors (as always :P ).

I liked that film for that, because it's not only an invented story and because, as you said, it makes think a lot.

It tells the story how it really was and show Turing's sufferences and his extraordinary intelligence. Reading the story from Wikipedia doesn't leave me anything, any feeling, any opinion, that's only objective. But watching that film left me emotions and also changed me, because now it's like I lived this story almost myself.

No, he was nominated for an Oscar for it, but Eddie Redmayne won. For playing Stephen Hawking. Which steams me a bit because BC was brilliant in the same role a few years earlier. Amber, that's one you should try to find, if you haven't seen it already. It's a TV movie, just called Hawking, it's wonderful.

You know, I never have gotten around to seeing the Fifth Estate. Must remedy that.......

Don't use the summon too many times, unless you include picture. :p

Geez.. Eddie who? I know it's not fair because I haven't watched Hawking, but I am entitled not to use reason now and think BC deserves it more for Immitation Game.

(I hit my head hard while cleaning and there is a big bump/lump. Therefore I have right to speak gibberrish for.. couple of years)

P.S.. I haven't really watched many thing BC, come to think about it.. just these few..

I haven't seen Redmayne in anything, but I still think he can't have been as good as BC. :d  Hawking was great ... it shouldn't be too hard to find online.

Posted

I saw both TIG and The Theory of Everything (Eddie's Hawking movie).  There was a clipped played on Ellen (US talk show) last year just after the Golden Globes (Benedict & Felicity Jones (played Hawking's wife) were both guests) that showed Eddie as Hawking in the wheelchair getting the letter board for the first time.  The acting in that was brilliant and I realized at that moment why he won Best Actor at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars.  I would have liked Benedict to win, but understand why he didn't.  Eddie did earn it.

But TIG did not go away empty handed, Graham Moore got an Oscar for Best Adaptive Screenplay.

This should make the cast and crew of TIG (and many other people) feel hopeful: the UK is proposing a law to allow for wiping the record clean for those convicted of same-sex "offences." https://www.cnet.com/au/news/uk-government-proposes-alan-turing-law-to-pardon-gay-and-bisexual-men/

'Bout time! You'd think that when a law is repealed or superseded or whatever, that anyone convicted of a crime that's no longer a crime would automatically be freed and cleared.

This country has a checkered history regarding gay rights.

But we've never been as bad a some and we are light years ahead to what is going on in some places right now.

We are progressive.
