Ah. It has been hard for everyone waiting sooooo long for the new episode! It seems crazy that we've now got the second episode tonight only 4 days since the last episode!

Off to watch Celebrity Mastermind - one of the subjects tonight is Sherlock. If I don't get them all right I shall be furious with myself!

I don't think I ever really considered before how great the music is in that scene with Moriarty breaking into the Tower

I'm in the US so still waiting for the PBS releases. But have looked up the rating number for the new season of Sherlock. Over 32 per cent of viewers....pretty darn good for one show to pull in between 8 and 10 million viewers in one night.

I've been succesfully avoiding this forum all day (well it wasn't that difficult since I'm not allowed using internet at work) then I finally watched TSoT, read all posts in TSoT thread, wrote a post about the episode and now I'm about to go to bed. I have 'Oh What a Night' playing on repeat today. Those who have seen TSoT will know why That song just became very emotional for me...

 

On a different note: Have you noticed that Moffat is the writer of His Last Vow? He is also credited for the writing of ASiP and ASiB, which are possibly the most well-written episodes (not necessarily my favorite ones, at least not ASiB) in the first two series, in my opinion.

Plot-wise, I might agree with you. Character- and dialogue-wise, I'm beginning to think I might favor Thompson (The Blind Banker / The Reichenbach Fall / The Sign of Three). And my absolute favorite episode (The Great Game) is by neither. I don't think I have a favorite writer on "Sherlock".

My three favorite episodes from the first two series (ASiP, HoB, and TRF) are written respectively by Moffat, Gatiss, and Thompson And TSoT was written by all of them, so it's certainly difficult to pick a favorite, but ASiP and ASiB (okay; and TRF) are perhaps the episodes that stand out for me as being most well put-together, as well as having some of the best dialogue.

 

But for me, there's not one really weak link in the show. I'm still getting used to the 'new' Sherlock, though.

Hm... Not sure I should even say the 'new' Sherlock about both TEH and TSoT, since they are very different from each other.

There are no plot details in the following at all, but I'll just spoiler box it in case anybody doesn't want to read my weird musings on the new episodes before they have seen them themselves.

 

 

 

I know what you mean. But I'm beginning to feel maybe he isn't so new, after all. You know how people seem to change when you get to know them better? I think that's what they're doing with Sherlock. They're letting the audience get closer to him, look behind the facade of coat collars and insults at the human being inside. That means sacrificing a lot of the image we have come to take for "the real Sherlock Holmes", of course. But not even Sherlock himself seems to know who that would really be. I can now make a lot more sense of some of the older Sherlock scenes where I originally had no idea what he might be doing or saying something for. And I'm pleased to see the actor being allowed a wider range. I just love good acting and I know the way Sherlock is done is very theatrical, but I love theater too and somehow, it just suits me. Besides, if I want to see people behaving and talking in an utterly naturalistic manner, I can always get on the next bus and drive around town. And also, as long as Freeman's Watson is around (who is changing considerably too, in my opinion) to "ground" Sherlock, I think there's little danger of him going over the top.

 

I just wish there was less sitcom-type comedy in the new episodes. But oh well. I'm sure some people like it fine and the acting reconciles me to a lot. (Good acting has led me to enjoy much, much worse writing...)

Nepotism has always been rife in the entertainment business, but surely Sherlock takes it to new heights? Three of the shows producers, Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Beryl Vertue, are all well connected. Beryl is Steven's mother-in-law and Mark's civil partner Ian Hallard has appeared in the show. If that wasn't enough, Martin Freeman's partner Amanda Abbington plays a new love interest and Benedict Cumberbatch's real folks, Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton, popped up as his parents!

They are all actors and good ones to boot. Have all made good names for themselves down through the years...and so what if they know each other....most everyone in the business does. Sounds like someone got some serious "Sherlock" envy.

I've watched TEH 4 times - my family think I've seen it 3 times and they said, "Mum, you're weird.". They don't know I sneaked another viewing when no-one was around. I've seen TSoT 3 times but we are going to watch it as a family on Saturday. I had watch it when it was broadcast and 2 secret viewings since then.

 

Glad to see I am not the only lunatic! But, really, don't you think they just get better with repeated viewing?

Ha. I try to forget her. Jealousy!! It's just so frustrating the way it sounds like those people only got hired because of their connections, like Amanda - making it sound like she was cast because of her relationship with Martin, when she's a great actress and brilliant in the role. *sigh*
