Guys, I've decided to change my facebook cover photo to something Sherlock-related, obviously. I'm searching for about 30 min. now and I still haven't found the right picture...
You are longer in this "bussiness" - do think you could help me, please?
I don't want anything too obvious (something that doesn't have "SHERLOCK" literally written all over). It could be either Sherlock or Moriarty and / or a quote, something "artistic" maybe... I will be grateful for any pics you throw at me. :)

Hah, thanks, I've tried to use a similar one - I wasn't completely sure about it - I had to mirror it (so that he is on the right, because profile pic is on the left) and it looked weird. :D But I will go with this one if there won't be anything better. :)

...So I made the cover photo myself. After the initial struggle in Photoshop (which spread across two days :D), this is the result. What do you think?

Out of context, that picture looks like a guy nervously casting a glance at his crush.

Sorry Bendy, that's not about you or your comment.  ;)  That's about my attempts to not ship them.  I realize that's not going to happen (them), so I'm trying to talk myself (unsuccessfully at times) out of going there.  Bit of an overreaction there.  lol

If he just wouldn't have been so sweet and gentle with her at times in Series 3.... *shakes fist*  That's where it all went downhill for me, because it's totally illogical and totally makes NO sense.

No, no.  Sorry, unclear... them as anything other than just friends makes no sense.  Sherlock in a relationship with anyone makes no sense.  :)

Hear, hear!

I laughed when I read your other comment about overreacting because you're trying not to ship them. Yeah, I know how that feels, only for me, it doesn't apply to Sherlock and Molly... I wouldn't be surprised if those two really did end up as some kind of a couple one day, although as you say it makes no sense, because I have the impression that the writers (or at least one of them) have a slight inclination that way.

You know how in stories, there are often two characters who you feel just really belong together? In about 100% of my favorite books, they get together eventually (I've been lucky that way, or maybe I just pick up on authorial intent really well). In Sherlock, I feel that way about Sherlock and John, only I really, really cannot see how sex would fit in with those two at all. I at the same time feel the same way about John and Mary (with sex, of course, I mean they're a couple and have a child, that makes total sense) and also about Sherlock and Irene (with these two, a real relationship makes no sense, though, but a strange kind of lifelong affair would). So I've got three "true pairings" for one universe involving the same characters, and that's very confusing and delightful. But it means I have to try very hard to not "get ideas" beyond what is on screen, because it's all complicated enough as it is. Just like real life. This series is bloody F***ing brilliant!

Well, here's the think about Sherlock and John - whatever your opinion is of Sherlock's sexual tastes, John is clearly hetero and is that way from episode one.  And hetero men don't just suddenly turn gay.  John is not gay, he never will be gay.  Personally, at this point, should Mary be killed off, I'm not even sure I see John ever having a real reason to move back into 221B.   He's moved beyond that.  Also, they're both doing well enough financially not to need to live together.

John does have a musical motif in the episodes.  I've heard it referred to as "John Alone," (perhaps from this forum somewhere), but make no mistake about it... S3E1 introduced a Sherlock/Molly love theme not once but twice.  Yes, they have a love theme.  Of course, Irene also has a love theme.  But I don't think there is a Sherlock/John love theme.  The love themes are reserved for the women in Sherlock's life.

Why can't Sherlock and John just be best friends without it having to be gay?  Why are so many gifs taken out of context as if Sherlock is pining for John's unrequited love.  He isn't.  He's got his own life, and as soon as John is married, he's back to his life doing casework without John's involvement.  He's genuinely happy for John and Mary.  He's not looking at John with "why didn't you marry me???"  Oh please.

We know Sherlock had some feelings for Irene, and what the heck happened after he rescued her?  They likely got it on.  But she's the woman he can't really have.

Then there's Janine, but I don't think she got a love theme in music.  Maybe that's because he didn't actually love her.

IF Sherlock ever explored a relationship, rest assured it would be the most guarded part of his private life.

Sorry, no funny picture.

Yes, but here comes the interesting part: In the original stories, after Holmes returns from the dead, Watson the widower does move back to Baker St. And neither man has any good practical reason for that. They both have plenty of money by that time. The doctor had a home of his own and a full-time practice. However, at Holmes' request, he sells that practice, for the purpose of moving back and being a 24-hour-7-days-a-week assistant to the big genius. And it turns out that actually, it was Holmes himself who bought the doctor out via his relative Dr Verner. So not only did he not need to save money, he even spent a lot of it on getting his companion back.

In 1892/1893, Watson marries again. Shortly afterwards, Holmes retires and becomes a recluse in Sussex. He describes being left alone at Baker St again as being "abandoned", albeit jokingly.

I don't think a man like Doyle would have meant to imply sexual relations in any of this. Not in Victorian England, where people believed homosexuality was a sin and / or a disease. Neither do I think our Sherlock-writers see either of their protagonists as gay. But it seems clear to me that there's love somewhere in the mix. (Watson actually says so explicitly, both in the original and this modern version). And the person we are closest to does not have to be the person we sleep with. (Watson also at some point in the original says that "I was nearer him than anyone else".)

For me, the emotional center of the Holmes stories has always been this strange kind-of-love-story between two very different men who were something between friends, colleagues, flat-mates and surrogate brothers. I actually don't care whether there might have been a bit of physical attraction in the mix or no. It's a lovely relationship either way.

Also, I think it's very essential to Holmes' character that he is basically a loner and Watson is an exception, the one human being he feels truly close to (while Watson has a number of female love-interests and other friends). It would be so odd for me if they changed that. They've already made Lestrade and Mrs Hudson much better acquainted with the hero than their original characters were. This, I think, is my main problem with Mollly. I really love her a lot, and I love how her relationship with Sherlock has played out so far, but if they make her his girl-friend, the "nearer him than anyone else" person, then I will feel as if something fundamental has been changed about one of my favorite fictional people, and I don't know if I'd like that.

As for "why can't they just be friends without people assuming they are gay?", of course that's basically a very valid complaint. I must say, though, that I think it is entirely the show-makers' own fault that people got ideas in the first place. I've gone on and on about that at length elsewhere, and this post is long enough, so I won't repeat myself here...

Well, I think we will never see Sherlock in a full time relationship with a woman because that would be really, really out of canon.  However, they've already taken lots of liberty with the canon, and I can see that they will take some other liberty, even temporarily, even if it were only within one episode.

They've probably got this whole thing planned out for S6 and S7 already.  I know they have S5 planned out if not partially written.  Wherever this thing ends up, they will continue to create new canon as they go, but it will never be fluffy romantic nonsense - because ever season will have to trump the previous one, so I just see things getting darker all the time.

Although I don't share your certitude (I've been proven wrong too many times by too many people to ever be positive of anything !! ) -- I have to say this is pretty much the same way I feel. Were it not for the internet, it would never in a million years have occured to me that John and Sherlock might be a romantic couple. I don't see it in any of their interactions -- any more than I see it in any interaction between Sherlock and Molly.  (Sherlock and Irene ... yeah, there's something there, but I don't know if Id' call it love.)

But to be fair, that's my predisposition -- in general I find the romance aspect of most stories somewhat boring, so I don't put a lot of effort into looking for it. It has to be fairly obvious to get my attention, frankly. So I'm open to the idea that other people are seeing things that I've missed (even though in my heart of hearts I think they're delusional..... :D )

I remember back when I was fairly new to this forum someone mentioned that the modern way to interpret fiction was to place no importance on the author's intent. It felt wrong to me at the time, but I've been trying to keep that in mind for some time now ... and it would certainly explain why so many different interpretations can be applied to a single scene of Sherlock. On some level that approach makes sense .... it's more practical, for one thing, as most of us don't have the opportunity to interview every author we read to find out what they really meant. So it makes sense that the reader's response to a work is more pertinent than the author's intent.

But ultimately, to me that still feels like a huge disservice to the author. Maybe it's because I'm a creator myself, and I know how incensed I would be if someone took my work and insisted it means something I never intended. I'd go to court to stop it, if I could, that's how strongly I feel about it.

But in the case of Sherlock, we have something that appears to be intentionally ambiguous a good part of the time. That's why, nearly a year after S3 aired, I keep parsing assorted interviews and videos, looking for clues to what is intentional and what isn't. Because it makes more sense to me to do it that way. But I think I can understand why some people take the ambiguity as an invitation to make anything of it that they want. So, ship on, shippers! Don't mind the snickering over here in my corner, it's just me being annoyingly smug. :D

Oh, do go on! I'm sure we can bear a recap or two. I know I could.

I agree they brought this on themselves, although I also think some people have taken it far more seriously than they ever intended. (That's what people DO!) Oooops, there I go talking about "intent" again......

OMG.  They have a (love?) theme.  I never noticed before.  The same music is used when he asks her to solve crimes as the bottom of the staircase.  Although, this theme isn't played outside of TEH, right?  Now I'm going to have to pay attention next time I watch ASIB and the Janine episodes (for lack of a theme?). Of course my traitorous shippery heart ran off to find it right away, while my head was like...
