Not really being silly when I mentioned the Homeless Network pulling a flash mob. My original thought wasn't musical only as support. As backup. I did then say Sherlock could wipe the pavement with them solo.

And he did tell Janine he loved to dance just hadn't had the right cases to be able to. So yeah, it would be cool.

Ok... I was thinking tough gangsta gang & you broke out talking about Riverdance... What was I supposed to deduce from that without the advantage of seeing your actual face or hearing the tone of your voice.

What do you guys think of the child Mary is expecting? In the books, there is no mention of her being pregnant. In fact she dies of an unknown death and Watson moves back to Baker Street... what does this mean for BBC's Mary and her kid? I feel like them both dying would be overkill as well, Mary dying and John stuck with the kid is... a bit awkward.

I am a bit puzzled by the decision to have Mary get pregnant, but I guess it serves a few dramatic purposes in series 3 and the baby really wouldn't have to play any big part in further episodes.

I have no idea what to expect, but I think there are basically the following possibilities:

- Mary and the child die. That would either happen in child birth, or they'd both be killed by the same person, probably someone who wants revenge for something Mary did in her past. I do not like this option, because I don't want an innocent baby to be killed off and because it would be so horrible for John to lose both his wife and his daughter, and I think he's been through enough.

- Only Mary dies, the child remains. That could happen in a lot of ways. I'm not sure whether I am convinced that they will kill Mary at all, though, canon or no canon. The original reference to her (?) death is vague enough; you can make anything out of it, and besides, Sherlock has never stuck closer to the old stories than seemed convenient. Besides, so many people seem to be expecting Mary to die that I doubt they'd let something this predictable happen. My guess is she'll almost die, or we only think she died, or only her identity as Mary Watson dies and she lives on - something like that. Some (more or less) clever twist.

- Neither die. Now, I would favor that option. I don't much care whether John and Mary stay (impossibly) happily married or separate, but I would appreciate it if poor John did not have to stand at somebody's grave again. Once was enough, if you ask me. While I think I would be happy for John if his marriage continued to work out and he had a happy family life in his spare time when we're not looking on, I can't quite picture that after what happened in His Last Vow and how he decided to deal with it all. My imagination has it's limits. Which the Sherlock writers are welcome to stretch, of course.

T O B Y... Are these initials on a Memory stick (we call them USB's here) somewhere?

You are really insightful. You seem to think about scenarios from many angles.

 Not yet, but I should create one... I actually only wanted to call myself "Toby" after the old dog in "The Sign of the Four", but that name was taken, so instead of thinking up something else, I just turned it into an acronym. Feel free to call me Toby. (I know it's a boy's name, and I'm a lady, but who cares, right? And besides, I think my family would say that "lady" is up to discussion... :P )

And thanks for the compliment, but I'm really rubbish at predicting future plot lines. Although I suppose "Mary turns out to be an assassin living under an assumed name and shoots Sherlock in the chest" wasn't exactly an obvious turn of events.

My only real "hit" so far was that I was almost sure Magnussen would go after Mary and try to blackmail her, because introducing the major female character and the villain who specializes in ruining women's lives in the same series was just too suggestive. Oh, and I really wanted Sherlock to show up just as John proposes to Mary, and that happened as well. Thank you, Mr Gatiss (he wrote that episode, right?) again for that little bit of wish-fulfillment.

I can't wait for series 4 to begin shooting and for the first rumors and pictures showing up. Speculation is so much fun.

I agree, I also think Mary's death would be quite a waste after everything Sherlock has done to protect her for John. One other option is John finally taking Mrs Hudson's advice and realizing he loves Sherlock after all :D Mary would be okay with that, I suppose. Okay, just kidding!! :P

Also A.G.R.A. appears in the book as Agra, the city in India where the treasure was found. I am just re-reading The Sign of Four and I just realized how cool the memory stick touch was!

I'm wondering if Mofftiss brought Mary on board not only because she is canon, but also in the original story of "The Sign of Four" Holmes actually did like her, paid her some high praise....for Sherlock Holmes.... and even mentions that she might be an asset to him and John in their crime solving endeavors.  Doyle dropped that line of thought and killed her off during "The Great Hiatus".....but maybe Mofftiss plan to explore the original in the possibilities on how she might have been a help mate not only to John but to Sherlock as well.

Hmmm. Interesting. But still there is the baby. What kind of asset will the baby be to the show. Little Archie was enough cuteness. Are we gonna have cute little moments throughout. I would think that would affect the tone of the show.

I'm not convinced that the baby would have had a lot of "screen time" any more then John's other one or two wives did after the "Great Hiatus".  They were mentioned very briefly indeed, if at all. Never named, never characterized. But there is no reason to assume that there were no children because they are never mentioned. John being the active lover as he seemed to be, I think it safe to at least theorize that he might have had at least one.

I forget where that conversation started concerning Johns 6th wife would be Mrs. Hudson. I was so traumatized by the very thought. A scene from the office came to mind & I couldn't find it @ the time. Now here it is.

The Office - Toby's return:

I think Fox was referring to ACD's Watson, who, indeed, might have sired a kid or two and not mentioned it in his writings. Maybe he had his kid(s) living with relatives after the mother's untimely death - raising a kid as a single father in Sherlockian times would've been pretty uncommon.

True...

I don't believe in the six wives, actually. I think Doyle just got his dates messed up. To me, it seems more likely that there were only two: Mary, and then another, name unknown, whom it seems the doctor married after living a while at Baker St again. After that, it apparently didn't take long for Holmes to go into retirement. I wonder whether solving crimes on his own just wasn't that much fun any more...

The original story, if you follow it to the end, is rather sad, in my opinion. I don't want to see Sherlock go there. I'm glad Janine announced she wanted to get rid of the bees.

How does the creator of a story get the dates wrong???

For Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes wasn't much more than a money-maker.  He simply didn't care about trivial things like dates.  Or the locations of wounds.  Or the number of somebody's wives.

Posted

Awwww. That's kind of disappointing. Sherlock is such a beloved character & story apparently. Oh, this was just Doyles job, how mundane. Hmm :(

Posted

Yes, it is pretty amazing that for all the inconsistencies, he still managed to create such an iconic character.  I suppose that's talent.  I'm sure he'd be astonished to see what's happening today.

Posted

Conan Doyle also got Watson's first name wrong in one story, and Mrs. Hudson's name wrong in another one.

He had Mrs. Watson calling her husband "James," which lead Dorothy L. Sayers (author of the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries) to theorize that Watson's middle initial "H." stood for "Hamish," which is Scottish for James.  Many adaptations, including Sherlock, have used her idea.

He called the landlady Mrs. Turner once, which is where Moftiss got "Mrs. Turner next door."

And his inconsistency with Watson's war injury (being variously in his leg or in his shoulder) inspired Moftiss to give John an actual shoulder injury and a psychosomatic limp.

It blows me away that his works were bearable for reading. I would think folk would be like... This is unacceptable! :o
