His continuity stinks -- but within any given story, everything hangs together just fine.  So only the big fans would be likely to notice.

I just had an idea. Maybe the writers meant for TBB to have weaker plot as homage to original canon stories not paying full attention to detail.

Of course you know that in TBB, the gal with the 9M jade hair pin was in real life BC's girlfriend.  At that time.

And the stories weren't published in book form at first, they were serialized in a magazine so they had to wait between publications. If they didn't save the articles month to month no one was going to to aware of any inconsistancies any way.

Right -- Doyle wasn't aware that he was writing Literature -- he thought of Holmes as just a pot boiler.

Whether or not Moriarty is back, I assume Andrew Scott is... and, if so, it would have to be as either the Moriarty we know or his brother. I presume. That means we'll hear from or about Moriarty again, and in that connection I would love some insight into Sherlock's hiatus; how he dismantled Moriarty's network. More importantly, I want John to have some insight into it. I always felt that was missing in TEH. There was no "so how have you been doing?" or "what exactly were you up to?" It was an episode focused on John's grief and anger, and his reconciliation with Sherlock. Great, but something is missing.

Though, spending our two-year long waits between series with contemplating possible scenarios is also quite fun.

John basically solved the mystery in ASiP, I would say. And he was a step ahead of Sherlock a couple of times in TBB. After that, tho .... I'm sure (I hope?) there's at least a couple examples but I can't come up with them.

Posted

Yeah, but that wasn't insight. He was simply following obvious leads. Also John got a hold of those clues because Sherlock gave him specific tasks. John didn't locate those things on his own volition.

He does what he always does, which is incredibly important. Saves the life.

Mmmmmm..... you might be right about TBB, but in Pink he figured out the cabbie was the threat all on his own.

He realized why his chair was back in it's place and the significance of the perfume bottle too, I think. (In HLV.)

But yeah, deduction's not his strong suit.

Here's an article about Moffats response to BBC Trust who is pressing them to do 12 shows per season.

This article has 17 gallery shots from HLV as well, I found some of the screen shots quite stunning.

Ok with the cabby, thank goodness John showed up when he did... But who was it that knew to search me phone in the 1st place. Also who set the chair back in place with the perfume... I mean John would have to be a bit daft not to figure that out.

Twelve episodes at a time?!  Much as I'd love that, if three episodes take three or four months just for the filming, then twelve episodes would take a year or more (not counting pre- and post-production).  Wonder how often they'd all have the time for that:P

Right. Its not like over here... Where our actors get paid big bucks to stick to their one gig. I heard British actors don't get paid as much. Not only that. It seems diversity is important to BC & MF.

Although poor BC was at comic con? To promote Madagascar. It was reported there were people lined up since 6 am dressed as Sherlock!

There are a gazillion things on my series 4 wishlist by now, but more than anything, I think I want the writers to lock themselves up in a lonely hut somewhere with A Complete Sherlock Holmes and without a phone connection or internet access, and completely forget they have a fan base, ignore everything that has been written and speculated about the show, privately or professionally, and just make the episodes they themselves really want to. I'd love it for them to return to the un-self-conscious style of series 1.

T.O.B.Y , who are you? What will we discover about you on that memory stick. Hmmm :sherlock:

I like what the Toby is cooking.

Although they should have a phone just in case of emergency. Nobody will hear their screams! :o

 Oh dear. The most boring story you could ever imagine. I am a not-young-any-more-nor-old-already-not-ugly-not-pretty-not-smart-not-dumb, perfectly average, female specimen of the human race, living in a very insignificant place, and currently very much overwound from a very trying day on a very challenging job. I suffer from insomnia, and that is the rather prosaic reason (apart from a heavy crush on the title character), why I hang around here at this time of night instead of snoring in my cozy bed.

Did you notice, by the way, that I did the acronym thing wrong? There should be a "." after the "y" as well. I suck at being mysterious.

Ahem. Back on topic. This is insane, but I am actually worried that the pressure of expectations of from fans, BBC officials, etc will ruin the quality of the show, and that the desire to produce something unexpected will lead to increasingly zany plots.

I should really, really go to bed now, before I begin to write stuff on here, out in the F***ing open world wide web for anybody to see, that I might regret... (And forgive me for swearing so much).

While Mofftis did give the fandom some serious nods in Season Three, they seem very determined to do Sherlock their way up to and including to resist any and all attempts from the BBC to rush things. If they can retain that attitude and determination they should be okay. Here's hoping anyway.

Yeah. I think they will do their own thing. Even all that in TEH was inspired. To me it made the story even more current & modern. Makes the characters seem even more real , especially with all the speculation about how he faked it. I think it was wonderful how they incorporated those "theories" into the show. It makes you feel even more apart of it, especially if you made it onto the special features & even more so if your idea about it made it onto the actual episode. Wow!

Let's get to tweeting everybody!

I share your love of Series 1, but I suspect that that was actually a very self-conscious style -- and that Moftiss finally felt confident enough to give themselves free rein for Series 3.

Fan reactions may sometimes affect their style, but I suspect that they mostly pay attention to things that encourage what they've secretly been wanting to do all along.

Just call me suspicious!  <_<

No, not suspicious at all, Carol. Your idea about doing things that they have" secretly been wanting to do all along" was born out in Sherlock's" Best Man's Speech". Moffat said he had been so disappointed that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle didn't include John and Mary's wedding in canon, that he had been dreaming a Sherlockian" Best Man's Speech" since he was seven years old.

Oh gosh, I would hope they never return to the style of series 1.  Don't get me wrong - anytime John and Sherlock are on scene it is electric, and Lestrade too - well, any of the regulars.  It's the bit players that were less so.  I watch the first series episodes but just so that I can hold a decent conversation about them.  However, put me into series 2 and 3 and then we're talking.

We know for Series 4 that there will be canon references all over the place because they love working that stuff in, but where Moffit/Gatiss have admitted also that they have told the big stories and that the smaller stories don't hold their own for a complete SHERLOCK episode, so I would think there will be lots of combining of things but not in an overt way.  They are creating their own canon, having already gone outside of the original canon since the start.

They say it's going to be darker, but you know that it will still have the great humor as well.

The Christmas special - so much speculation about how that is tying into series 3, does it tie in at all, what is it exactly.... I am thinking it may somehow be in tone like TSOT.  And then when the block of 3 episodes start, they will be more in tone with HLV.  I could be wrong but that's how it feels to me.

Yup, the Christmas special could be along the lines of "Many Happy Returns"  maybe....hopefully... dealing with the aftermath of Sherlock's near exile. But since it is reportedly supposed to run the full 90 minutes it could be a full fledged case...still hoping to see a full updated version of "The Blue Carbuncle".  Darker....for Season 4....would be no surprise. Learning who and what is behind the Moriarty "Did You Miss ME" gif and maybe more about "the Other One". It promises to be a eye opener but I do hope not as much of a shock fest as "HLV".

Probably wrong about that...but a woman can dream with the best of them.
