I think there will be more drug use as he gets progressively more human and probably can't cope with what he has worked so hard to keep at bay and under control.

I can't argue with that, but gaaah, I hope not.

I wonder whether they'll use "The Blue Carbuncle" for the Christmas Special in some way. It's the only Holmes story set around Christmas that I can remember.

Alex is wondering the same thing -- in which case they'll need an episode title that's a pun on it.  Maybe Sherlock will receive a Christmas greeting intended for someone else, in "The Yule Card Bungle."

... One might even argue that it's already been dealt with! Because John did lose Mary, in a way, when he found out that she never existed in the first place and that he was married to a mysterious stranger with a shady past instead.

Somehow that interpretation seems just a tad too twisted even for Moftiss!

My best guess as to what "sad bereavement" Holmes was referring to is this (and I'm lapsing into real life here): Conan Doyle wrote "The Empty House" without any reference to Mrs. Watson, and when his editor said "Hey, wait a minute, Watson can't just move right back in with Holmes, he's a married man!" -- that's when Conan Doyle added that brief passage about Watson's "sad bereavement."

But I know that's no help whatsoever in trying to figure out what Moftiss will come up with. Unless their minds are even more warped than we realize!

"It is quite a three pipe problem" is a quote from the original Sherlock Holmes. The three patch line was an updated version because Sherlock is....was....supposed to be trying to quite smoking...and he doesn't smoke a pipe....haven't seen any evidence of a pipe yet...anyway.

In the commentary for "Great Game," Benedict Cumberbatch says he does not want Sherlock to smoke a pipe. That probably wouldn't preclude a brief tongue-in-cheek scene, though, such as has been done with The Hat.

Yes, I do suspect Doyle didn't bother much with continuity, but just made up stuff from story to story, whatever he needed at the time. If he wanted to try writing a case from Holmes' point of view without Dr Watson, he quickly decided that the good doctor had left for a wife (again? still? who cares, he just did). If he needed Watson back at Baker St., there he was. Big brothers and villains appeared out of nowhere, as did uni friends of a formerly friendless and quite antisocial man. First names changed - or were re-used, like "James" for both Professor Moriarty and his brother. It must be so much fun to dig around in that chaotic little universe and try to make some sense of it... So far, I think the Sherlock team have done a brilliant job!

May I heartily disagree?

Always! Spice of life and so on...

I don't find John's lady friends annoying. And while they may not be too relevant for plots (except for Mary, who turned out to be highly relevant), they do add to John's characterization.

John and Molly? Nah... although I did originally think that was planned because of Molly's name (which is, in essence, Mary, right? Molly is a variation of Mary, I think...). But I really can't see that happening.

You know, I'd like to see more tag-team deductions with Sherlock and Mycroft! That bit in TEH was just fantastic, with all the brotherly banter and such.

Well, I'm glad somebody enjoyed it. For my part, the less I see of Mycroft, the better... Unless somebody wants to break a heavy object over his head or something (*grumble*).

Aw poor Mycroft.  I love him!  I think he's a great character and would love to see more of him.

Just found this on tumblr:

I can’t wait for John to move back into 221B. It will be such a magical moment.

Sherlock will be so happy. I don’t even think he’ll be able to hide it.
He’ll smile that beautiful smile- the one he reserves just for his blogger and no one else.

And we’ll hear him say, in that deep, sensuously rich voice of his:

“Welcome home, John.”

This. I don't much care what happens in the other 4 times 90 minutes if that scene is included there somewhere.

I actually doubt Sherlock would be unambiguously glad if John did move back. For all the "vacancy" it created, John and Mary's marriage seems pretty damn important to him, and I think he wouldn't be particularly thrilled if something went wrong with them. And what other reason could there be for poor John to go back to bachelor's hall?

What I would really like to see (among a ton of other things), is John doing something more or less heroic to save Sherlock, from either Moriarty or Mycroft and / or himself. I don't mind that he has to play the damsel in distress most of the time, but I do think it'd be nice to have a little variety, and I'd like to actually see the lifesaver Sherlock talked about in his wedding speech in action. It doesn't have to be as dramatic as actually preventing anybody from dying, it can be simply standing up and telling Mycroft to go play in the food processor if he ever gets it into his head again to send his little brother to hostile territories and enjoy himself by watching him being tortured there.

Just something along the lines of the "friends protect people" approach put to the test, I guess.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too happy if Sherlock was HAPPY about it, because if John did move back in, that would mean that something pretty traumatic had happened to our dear John, and if Sherlock was happy about that, he'd be completely, unredeamingly soulless.  If you take joy in another's terrible misfortune, it's a bad thing.  Really bad.

   "...go play in the food processor..."

Well, he did kick Mycroft out of Sherlock's flat pretty emphatically.  Yeah, I'd like to see more of that.

Well. I don't know. Sherlock doesn't believe in the tradition of Marriage. I don't know that it would make him feel negatively about John moving back in... I mean, he didn't understand why John was getting upset @ the thought of the media turning on him. "I don't understand" why that would upset you... Sherlock says to John...

I don't know guys... Sherlock is pretty selfish & "ridiculous " he thought John would still be @221 after he was gone for two years... I think he would be more than ecstatic to have the one who keeps him right move back in. Once you go Watson, going back to the skull had to be dull. I wasn't trying to rhyme but cool that worked out.

He might not be happy about the traumatizing event, but happy about John seeking help with him. We've already seen twice how John retreats into his own shell in times of trauma.

Say, something bad happens either to or with Mary, and John closes down (not that unrealistic imo). It'll fall to Sherlock then to coax him out of his protective shell again (and his attempts at it would probably be both heartbreaking and funny to watch at the same time). Won't he be allowed to be happy then, when John finally admits that living alone is driving him even more insane, and comes back to 221B?

eta: Also, second (well, third :D) that part about BAMF!John. More of that, please.

You know... I want to see more street underground scenes. Like in TBB. Graffiti. I like to see some real rundown neighborhoods.

Yeah, just some more of London in general. They film it with such affection.

There's an area just east of King's Cross Station that's kinda rundown -- though I hear it's on the way back up, so I hate to think what it used to be like!  I think it's fine in the daytime, but at night it gives me the creeps!

At any rate, the area's already been used (very briefly) as background in at least one movie (Breaking and Entering, with Jude Law and a terrific supporting actor named Martin Freeman), and it's not far from the Sherlock bailiwick -- so I would imagine that both the legalities and the logistics would be manageable.

I nominate that!

And then Sherlock's Homeless Network pulls a flash mob on them.....or Sherlock just takes them on solo and wipes the pavement with them.

See it would be cool to see Sherlock facing a "real" London gang

.. Not from China. ;)

Yeah, I could go for that!  Kinda odd that it hasn't happened already, really.  He's faced what could be called Organized Crime in the form of Moriarty's various puppets, but never what I'd call a "gang."

Posted

Well maybe there simply were no more (or hardly any) independent gangs in London, either because the pickings were so slim because of the superior competition in form of Moriarty's web, or because he'd managed to have all of them either join him or, er, retire.

Although I was thinking more hip hop or break dance. River dance would be fabulous. Have some gang member in baggy pants, converse & a wife beater tap dancing & clogging. :P

Yeah

Bakerstreet was just kind of being silly about my real London gang confrontation. Just matching silly with silly.

No problem!  It just sounded like West Side Story, so I was kidding you.  But then I guess you couldn't see the grinning emoticon in my post, could you?  Sorry -- didn't mean to come across like a humorless dictator!
