I've just been reading through all the old posts about season 4, so forgive me going off the fashion topic, this is probably old news to everyone....

I'm so conflicted about Mary and John in Season four and what will happen with the baby. I think a soft option may be to have Mary go on the run, rather than die, (and it leaves a door open for cameos) but I don't know about the baby. I think one thing about our Watson and the one in the books is that he's that bit younger and more vulnerable, and I really worry about how John would deal if he lost Mary and the baby. And yet, you can't have Sherlock turning into Two Men and a Baby either. So, would Mary take the child too? But then I think John would be obsessed with finding them. So maybe they will kill them off. I just think that our John is that bit more sensitive and less stoic than canon Watson, and I don't know how it is all not going to break him.

The other side of that is, I think marriage and a family has been John's dream for so long. He was willing to forgive Mary for a lot of things to get it. If he lost all that, and had to move back in with Sherlock, will he resent living with Sherlock for being s step back and not the life he really wants? I think it could be so bad for their friendship.

I think the best thing would be keep Mary and the baby alive and healthy and very much in the background.

I would like to see more of the snug but perfectly fitted purple shirt in Season 4. There, back on topic.

Back on fashion, I want more luxury dressing gowns in season four. Perhaps there is some colour of ridiculously expensive dressing gown he doesn't yet own?

Knowing their budget - if you want to see it, you have to buy and send it to them by yourself.

I think they may be out of my reach, sadly. I could maybe afford one of those sheets Sherlock likes to wear about the flat and various palaces. And finances are tight so it would probably only be a fairly modest single sheet...

Please do. :P

Hear hear. If this is supposed to be a modern update, it only makes sense to me that someone like John would have a family. Also, I think at this point, if they want to surprise us, keeping Mary alive, well and in the background is the last thing we all expect.

 Everyone likes the purple shirt so much... It isn't my favorite, though. Not that I don't like it, but I prefer some of the other stuff. (And my favorite Sherlock outfit is what he wears when he's shooting the wall in The Great Game, anyway).

Hear, hear!

I still cannot imagine them killing Mary. Certainly not in series 4. They have only just introduced her! Why would they want to get rid of her now?

Although I am curious how Sherlock would handle it if John lost his family. I'm kind of hoping for a "shit - that's what this looks like?" brainwave and a little more genuine remorse for The Fall, but probably it wouldn't occur to Sherlock to compare those things.

What I really, really want to happen on the show is Sherlock secretly spending a ton of money on buying John out of his practice and saving him from his boring job that John hates anyway. I think this is the nicest thing Holmes ever did for anyone, and I'd love it if they incorporated that into their modern adaptation.

Dear TOBY, if that is the case, and although I'm in the wrong thread, I should inform you of a wonderfully whimsical Ao3 story called All lives End by dioscureantwins, which is told from the point of view of said garment.

Lucky so-and-so can loll about in it all day, and get bored enough to shoot the wall, while the rest of us have got to dress properly and go to work!

Although, in ACD, Dr Verner ( surprisingly not Vernet) bought Dr Watson out just so the selfish genius could have his flat mate back. Purely out of altruism, of course, and for the sake of the reading public, much like our modern forums, pulling this way and that.

As for Mary, if the matter is not settled in the Special, as has been rumoured, I have set all my hopes on that untrustworthy Mr Moffat's announcement about S4 being about consequences, in which case an internationally infamous contract assassin will get her comeuppance! And good riddance!

Yeah the side of it that would affect Sherlock would be fascinating, but I don't know if it is worth it for what it would do to John in the longterm.

I would love to see that too. Although I think Sherlock may want to ease off on the grand gestures for a while after HLV.

  With one of those public awareness video adverts with sad music and a voice-over talking about how all his clothes are too tight from working out... and maybe a poignant button popping off the purple shirt at an unfortunate moment.

Aha, but not all consequences are bad, you know! Mary could come out smelling like a rose!

If only. I'm not sure he's genetically capable of it though. And I agree, John's suffered enough for awhile, I hope they think of a more original direction to go in. John happy! John secure! What a concept!

Or should that be an unfortunate button popping off at a poignant moment, as Moriarty intones "off you pop" ....

Dear Arcadia, he also mentioned "chickens coming home to roost" and "consequences biting you on your *ahem* 'behind'." That did not sound rosy at the time.

Don't they actually have a pretty good wardrobe budget, though?  Them Belstaffs don't come cheap!

I can see it now. John whumpage. Sherlock whumpage! Even Greg and Molly and Mrs. H whumpage!!! While Mary retires in blissful content....

The Belstaffs are sold out. They cannot spend more on them. I suspect that Ben would be happy if they run out of them, though.

True.  But they did spend a ton of money for those coats, and Sherlock's other clothing seems pretty upscale as well, so their wardrobe budget is by no means miniscule.

On the other hand, they presumably aren't made of money, or Sherlock would have some shirts that fit him now!

They do fit him! Nicely. They're just .... snug.

That's Benedict's original fault, if you have a look in The Chronicles, he went with the person responsible to choose the appropriate wardrobe, including what he now calls the carpet but must have been very glad for in S1 with its Arctic temperatures. The acting ectomorph went for slim-fit shirts at Spencer-Hart, instead of regular! That has definitely had "consequences" already! Serve him right!

And the Chinese are reproducing the Belstaff at 1/5 of its original cost. ^_^

What I'm curious about is if they start directly after the time of ending of S3 or make a 2 years interval. Much will depend on it. Note that if they want to go on like this, until Sherlock is fat and bald, they cannot maintain the continuity between the series like between S2 and S1.

Well the special answers the cliffhanger of 3.3 per Moftiss so there is a possibility of a time gap like there was between 2 & 3

I still don't get how they're going to answer the cliffhanger in a Victorian "one-off" special.  Either it's a one-off or it's not.  Either it's tied to the rest of the series or it's not.

I'm cranky today.

I'm not sure either but can't wait to see how they'll do it.

Now do we blame the cranky on: hormones, lack of sleep, annoying/boring job, the long hiatus, or the general not knowing & not liking the not knowing (had to paraphrase Sherlock)? Maybe a combo of the previous or something else? ;)

I have no idea what my dealio is today.  I think it's a sum of Carter crapping all over the X-Files (if you haven't seen it, Mulder and Scully broke-up) and waiting for this Special that I'm still kinda annoyed over as it supposedly doesn't play into the overall series.  I mean, yay for anything, but I want the story to continue.  Not just a bone thrown in the fandom's direction to placate us until they get around to filming S4, let alone it airing.

See... cranky.   lol

I decided I should come back and attempt some semblance of positivity....  so in series 4 I would like to see:
