Sorry, Toby.  lol     I don't think her clothes as individual pieces are necessarily bad, like bedelia said, I just find her combinations to be a little questionable.  But I do love her look, it's so her.  I wouldn't want them/her to change a thing.  Which is why I'm so sad there's no Funko Pop doll.  I was hoping for a Molly Funko Pop with that great scarf from TEH (although they probably would have gone with the lab coat).

I have seriously never thought of Molly as a "fashion disaster" before.

I'm sorry! It's just especially the christmas decoration and giant earrings in Scandal, and the giant hair ribbon in Sign of Three that I hated. Most of the time she looks cute- in her work clothes for example. When I see her wearing those over-the-top hair/ head accessories, I just think, this is a girl who does not know how pretty she is without the christmas decoration on her head.

Yes, she has nice taste in individual pieces. I keep wondering where is her good female friend to say to her... yes to both of these items, but maybe not together?!

There may be factors we're not aware of. I once tried to be helpful to a dear friend who tended to wear prints with plaids, by suggesting that her patterned items might look nicer paired with plain colors. It turned out she was well aware of that, but her family didn't have a lot of money to spare, and most of her clothing was hand-me-downs from her older sister.

Molly presumably makes a pretty good income, but she rents an apartment by herself in London (and not just a one-room place, it's got a separate bedroom).  That can't come cheap.  She may also have expenses we're unaware of, such as helping to support a relative. So for all we know, she has very little money available for clothing and is making do with her big sister's hand-me-downs.

I don't know if that quite gets her off the hook, because at Christmas she actually had (in my opinion) a very nice dress on, but then proceeded to add to it in a rather disastrous way, with the earrings and hair (or so I see it). That particular outfit really makes me think it's just the lack of a knack for knowing what goes together, rather than not having the clothes.

I could see the lack of funds theory holding water for the wedding outfit, though, now you say it, as it had a vague look of possibly being made by an elderly female relative, based off the sort of pattern used for girls in the chorus of 1950s seaside variety shows, where the dress is cut from a pattern, and then a strip it cut off the end and tied around the head for extra... effect.

And just because I feel very mean for taking apart those other outfits, this is from one I really like:

Scotia because of Scott in Sherlocks full name. Maybe even Nova Scotia...

Ah, got it. Thanks.

As regards her slacks, as we've discussed on another thread, the clothing manufacturers simply do not seem to have some of us in mind, and in this case "us" may include Molly.  If she can't afford custom-tailored slacks, she has to do the best she can with what's available ready-made -- and if she has to choose between comfort and style, she may (like me) give more weight to practicality.

I just think she's wearing a size or two too big.

That dress strikes me as very un-Molly, like maybe she bought it at Good Will (a charity shop) and then had absolutely no idea what to do with it? Heaven knows I'd have no idea either! So OK, maybe lack of funds and lack of "dressing up" experience?

Didn't I just say that?  :P

An increasing percentage of the slacks on the market seem to be intended to be worn far too tight for anything I would call comfort.  So if I were stuck with buying them, I'd have to go up a size (maybe even two).  I'm very fond of breathing.

As someone very dear to all of us has already remarked, "Breathing is boring".

Apparently, they should call S4 Sherlolly and be done with it, given the current thread! She is a fashion disaster because she has no dress sense, compared to Mary's signature red coat and Irene's perfectly co-ordinated outfits.

This is probably un unpopular opinion, but I prefer Molly's day-clothes to Mary's. I think Molly has a little bit of an Annie Hall thing I can get behind in her day-to-day stuff (especially the oversize trousers, which, like Carol says are also practical), But for me, Mary looks dressed straight from a catalogue and I don't see her personality in her clothes. I could say the same for John, though. I do admire Irene's style, and I think only someone with her personality could pull it off.

Yeah, I see this possibility, but then again, I believe a person can dress well in second hand clothes. I don't believe money is the most important factor in style. I studied Art at college and I always thought some of the most stylish people there spent the least on their clothes- a good eye is more important than money. Some people who spend lots on their wardrobe look appalling.

I feel I should try and criticise Sherlock and say something about how his shirts often look uncomfortably tight, but really, who am I trying to kid here?

Of course a person can dress very well in second-hand clothes -- but Molly is clearly well out of her comfort zone in that dress!  If I were her, I'd stick with the slacks and shirts and sweaters (though maybe buy a few plain-color ones).

Speaking strictly for myself, if I can't wear jeans and a sweatshirt (nice ones, mind you!) somewhere, I simply don't go there.  It's been years since I wore nylon stockings (think I still have some around here, somewhere....).

I like some of John's clothes, not all, but some.

His jacket:

I love this coat, minus the leather on the shoulders and elbows.  I basically bought a jacket like it for myelf.

This sweater:

But I'm a total sweater junkie.

I do like that sweater sittything- I like those sort of cable-knit sweaters on men in general.  And I remember noticing his coat- and also liking it apart from the patches. But in general i think his clothes are fine but forgettable.

Yes or the dress- equivalent of what else she wears, which you would think would be quirky printed slightly retro style dress.

Sorry I feel I've been part of a major fashion tangent when the thread should be about season 4.  A season where hopefully everyone wears clothes most of the time.

I don't know, have we had a fashion tangent before?   I don't remember once since I've been here!  Now I'm contemplating everyone's wardrobes.

Maybe the shirts are stretchy? :D

They would drive me crazy, but maybe it's because I'm a bit oversensitive about my... front anyway... ermm... nope. Anything tight is a no go, and that's not because of the looks.

Are they? like is the dark purple one stretchy? I can't remember what episode it was where he wore that one and I turned to my boyfriend and said 'Sherlock's shirt is like, ridiculously tight!'- and he didn't seem remotely impressed by my observation. Plus I probably missed elements of the plot due to my distraction. :(

Some of Sherlock's shirts are a bit snug and pull at the buttons.  I don't remember, did stuff fit better in S1 and was it tighter in S2?  Effect of BC gaining muscle for Kahn?

Oh could be, I never thought of that! But surely they could afford a new shirt or two?

I thought they were just playing up the sex symbol angle.

Or cut them open at the back... (I'm smiling at the memory of that song about Sherlock's purple shirt...) XD

There's a song?!

For some role, yes, I believe that's what I've heard -- oh, right, here it is:

There was an entertaining question about Benedict’s shirts on Sherlock (Louise who knows her fannish stuff pointed out how much everyone loves the purple one!) The shirts were apparently fitted for him at the beginning of series 1 but in between series 1 and 2 he bulked up considerably for Frankenstein. Benedict was meant to go on a crash diet regime to lose the bulk but didn’t (hence as Sue pointed out him looking so good in the scene at Buckingham Palace) and as a result the buttons on the shirts were really straining. Also towards the end of the shoot he was trying to put on weight for Parade’s End so Mark joked that every time he looked around Benedict was eating pudding and Sue mentioned a scene where Benedict asked her to look after his cake while he was filming!

Seems to be an ongoing thing, with Khan being merely one of the most recent reasons.

Sorry, yes you did. What I meant was, I just think she's wearing 3 or 4 sizes too big. :p

I finally threw mine out this spring. With a shout of joy.

And I'm fairly certain you're right!

It's been awhile since I've worn full nylon stockings.  I've worn thigh highs on occasion, but I prefer leggings.  They are comfortable and serve the same purpose without the drawbacks.

Since we're continuing on the dress code hi-jack, I need lots of dresses, full in the skirt and mid-calf length so I can perch on a desk, during interminable hours of lectures, sheer tights, denier 15, low-heeled shoes in winter and platform wedges in summer. But, thank Heavens, my mother was a natural for combining and co-ordinating things, so tailored suits and blouses of a severe cut would be my approximation to Sherlock's, although I favour blue in its entire spectrum, rather than charcoal grey. So no fashion disaster like Molly, thank you very much! She only has to carry out autopsies and lab work on her own, I have to stand up in front of dozens of students and lecture: they judge your appearance, from the colour of your hair to your jewellery!

I would like to see more of the snug but perfectly fitted purple shirt in Season 4. There, back on topic.
