I'd actually seen Benedict in 2 or 3 things before I even heard of Sherlock, I just didn't realize it ... Warhorse, Amazing Grace and an episode of Last Enemy. Now I feel bad I didn't recognize his genius immediately ..... I'm so shallow ..... :(

You're not shallow.  You just saw but didn't observe like most people (at least according to :sherlock2:)

Yes, I had seen him in War Horse too...didn't know who he was or who Tom Hiddleston was either, so I looked past both of them...

How about this... I just didn't pay attention to anything he was in (not including Amazing Grace as I watched that for the history lesson not caring who was in it & was the 1st project I saw him in) until I watched my first episode of Sherlock last July (not much of a PBS watcher the last several years) and then found out that he was in the 2 Hobbit films that had been release up to that point and researched what other works he was in.

Well, the good thing is that we're all paying attention now, aren't we???  I have a really good collection of his film/TV stuff but need to start working on some of the books he's narrated.  I don't have any of those.

I should also add, however, that i didn't know who Martin Freeman was before Sherlock, and I'd seen him in the Hobbit, but didn't know who he was.  i'd also seen Love Actually and didn't know who he was.  I've since made a point of purchasing some of his works also.

Same with Tom Hiddleston.

Martin I didn't know until the Hobbit. Watched Love Actually in 2013 so I knew who he was at that point but didn't look further until Sherlock. Still need to see more of his stuff. I've now seen for of Benedict's roles than Martin's.

I saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  Odd little film.  And Nativity! is quite a charming little piece.  The kids in it are wonderful, especially this one little boy.  Both can be picked up cheaply on eBay.

First thing I saw BC in was Star Trek Into Darkness.  I thought he seemed interesting, but it's not like he really grabbed my attention.    I honestly, based solely on his part as Kahn, would have assumed he was older than he actually is (which is ironic, because with Sherlock I assumed he was younger than he is).  I may have had a "he's kinda attractive moment" but that was about the end of it for me.  I didn't even make the connection immediately that the actor that plays Sherlock = Kahn because I was too busy fawning over Sherlock.

Empirically, is BC handsome?  My initial gut reaction is no, but I guess he must be if so many women think so.  He's definitely not classically handsome, though.  Has anyone ever mapped it out to see how symmetrical his face is?  That would be a way to quantify it.  lol.   Maybe his face is fairly symmetrical, so even though some of his features seem a bit out of proportion?

I may not be the best judge, though, because I think Hiddleston is very handsome.  Like I thought this was a thing everyone could agree on.  lol.  Then I showed my mother a photo of Hiddles and she was all:

So, apparently handsome is just as much in the eye of the beholder as beauty.

Handsome & beauty seem essentially synonyms. Personally I do think Benedict is handsome. I can see why some would consider him sexy, but because he is not my hubby (the closest things for looks is the usual color of his hair is a few shades lighter than my hubby's hair with the same auburn highlights), I don't give him the title of sexy on principle that I reserve that title for my hubby.

Does anyone's spouse look like a celebrity?  I don't think that my H really resembles anyone.

Ben is nominated for a BAFTA again for Sherlock!

For series 3? It's not exactly new...

Maybe S3 didn't completely release in time for last year's dead line so he qualifies this year as well.

Nope, but he's a decent thespian in his own right. Not professional grade but could potentially be decent in a community theater setting.

Stephen Moffat used the term "exotic" to describe his looks.  Actually, he was describing both Sherlock and Irene as "exotic creatures."

Exotic is a good descriptor for Sherlock and Irene (or I guess BC and Lara Pulver).  But I would apply exotic to their personalities, in addition to just their looks.

Not a specific celebrity, no, but I definitely think my hubby is objectively sexy.  He ticked all the boxes for me when I first met him on a completely shallow, appearances only basis:  Tall, beefy, intensely masculine, and wearing this incredible Greek fisherman's cap that made him look like he'd just gotten back from catching an 1,100 pound marlin on his own.  Whew!  (fans self)

I think BC is dynamically sexy.  I've never seen him in person, but I suspect that photos don't do him justice -- it's what he can do with his face and his body movements that make him someone you want to watch.  And when those actions are paired with behaviors that are mesmerizing (like Sherlock or Khan), then he becomes sexy in those moments.

I believe you're right about the definition of "handsome" in the classical sense. It's all about symmetry and society's idea of perfect proportions, which probably boils down to "normal" (which is to say unremarkable, which kinda leaves Mr. Cumberbatch on the outside, doesn't it?). But even though I'm apparently hard-wired to consider a symmetrical, unremarkable face to be attractive in an objective sense, such a face doesn't really do much for me, at least not in a vacuum. I feel far more attracted by what a face does.

I just found this:

I dunno that I'd describe him as photogenic, but this person seems to think his face is pretty symmetrical.

I actually did a bit of research in undergrad on societal views of beauty and facial symmetry.  It was pretty interesting, and depressing, if you're anything like me appearance-wise.  lol

I have no idea what this app is, but:

I only skimmed it b/c... work.  lol

ETA:  I will NOT be plugging my face into any apps.  It would just break and then I would have the sadz.  lol

Just a minor quibble with Mr. C -- I seriously doubt, if Alan Turing were alive today, that he'd wear "a cool and modern retro version" of anything.  Alan Turing was a scientist.  Scientists are not generally into "cool."  If Turing had been born in the 70's, he'd presumably wear whatever 40-ish geeks are wearing nowadays -- maybe generic jeans and a shirt one size too big, with his only (twenty-year-old) suit reserved for formal occasions.  In any case, he certainly wouldn't turn the collar up!

Now that is cool!  Would love to know what that app is, just for kicks.  That article you linked to includes one quote that I fully agree with: "Mali Finn, a casting director in Hollywood, said 'I don’t think that you need the face of a Leonardo DiCaprio or of a Mark Damon. To be famous, I think you simply have to have a face that is distinctive.'"

And "distinctive" ain't classically handsome.  If you doubt that, just ask yourself if you'd recognize the model for a classical Greek statue if you saw him on TV.  I find faces of that sort to be nice looking but hardly memorable.

I have found what appears to be that app, and it's free.  I plugged this photo of Martin Freeman into it:

mrtinFrman-shot_220457.jpg

... and got this result:

You are a 6.59 out of 10.  Here's why:

  • Your face has poor horizontal symmetry.
  • Your ears are too long for your nose.
  • Your innerocular [i think they mean "interocular"] distance is too big for your eyes.
  • Your nose is too wide for your face width.
  • Your face is too narrow / too long.
  • Your nose is too wide for your mouth.

The best compliment I ever received was from the fellow who was applying my makeup for the only stage play I was ever in.  He said, "You have an interesting face," which pleased me far more than the times I'd been told I was pretty or whatever.  I think both Cumberbatch and Freeman have very interesting faces.

Interesting, other than the last item... BC and MF are nearly identical in the comments.  Score is different, though.

If someone else doesn't beat me to it, I'm gonna be plugging the whole cast into this app this evening.  lol

ETA:  To me Martin Freeman is cute.  Not devastatingly handsome, but cute.  I had a little crush on him back in his Office/Hitchhikers days.

Well of course their comments are nearly identical -- since they look so much alike!  ;)

And apparently that site is really keen on nose-to-mouth ratio.

Hey, beat me to it all you like!  :D  (I still have to finish filling out our tax forms.)

But it seem to apply to men. Look - how many women with looks, let's say, of Danny DeVito, Jean Paul Belmondo, Depardieu, Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, Ron Howard, Malcolm McDowel, Jack Black, Dustin Hoffmann, Richard Harris, Harvey Kaitel, John Goodman, Jon Voight, Bob Hoskins... would make it into first row of stardom - just because of their talent?

Kathy Bates. Whoopi Goldberg.

Anyone Else?
