Sorry, Mr Freeman, but this was my favorite of your roles (well, until John Watson. But I do like Tim just as much as John, actually). And this must be my favorite television couple there is. (For all of you who have not seen the original, British The Office: give it a try. And do watch the Christmas Special, too, because otherwise, the series might well depress you for life.)

Um... I wouldn't if you didn't like the series in general. (I'm guessing you suffer from the very common "David Brent allergy", and I don't blame you - I can't stand him for more than one episode a day, either, but then, I guess that was kind of the point).

Yeah, I hated the main character so much that I wanted to punch him everytime he was on screen. And that was nearly all the time. And then there was the documentary style in which it was filmed. It took me quite a long time to get used to it. And thanks for telling me how it ended. I don't think I would ever make myself actually watch it

Yeah, I've seen a few interviews with him and he seemed really nice. He just played the character so well that I simply couldn't stand him.

I never watched the show.  It never interested me.  A Chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin is not really my thing even thought the story line is somewhat compelling. 

 

All I know is that they make drugs and there is a pizza on the roof. That's literally it.

If you've watched all twelve regular episodes of The Office, you really owe it to yourself to watch the Christmas special -- it's just one more hour and a very satisfying one to boot.  Not only does the Tim & Dawn story take a lovely turn, there's even hope for David Brent.

 

But for those who just want the best part, click here -- I've even cued it up for you.  Hint:  Watch the hallway in the background, between Gareth and Tim.

Is anyone else watching this new show "Gracepoint"? It's actually good enough that I dropped everything else I was doing and just watched. Although it's weird hearing David Tennant with an American accent. Not that he speaks that much. I like his character, am finding the woman rather annoying. I suspect it's supposed to be the other way round.

Probably my all time favorite, despite all of the life ruining it did, will always be The X-Files.  They may have mucked up the end royally, but I love it too much to ever quit it.

Doctor Who (I'm watching the reboot now.  I don't love it like I do X-Files or Sherlock, it's a little too campy, but it's entertaining and Tennant is fabulous)

BBC - The Office (I watched this way before the American version was even a thought and loved it.  And then it was cancelled, of course.  I haven't watched the American version)

Cancelled? I thought The Office just ended. They did two seasons and then wrapped the story up with that Christmas Special. That was one of the things I liked about it -  I always want a proper ending, and I hate it when a series is dragged out to the point where it doesn't make sense any more.

 

The early X-Files episodes that I saw, I all liked. But didn't eventually one of the actors quit? I can't imagine X-Files without both Mulder and Scully.

Yes, David Duchovny only stuck around through the end of season 7.  He was in a handful of episodes in season 8, and only in the series finale in season 9.  They should have really just ended the show after season 7, in my opinion.  And don't even get me started on the 2nd movie, or the William mess.  I'm still holding out hope for a 3rd movie to make it all OK.  lol

Oh my god - you missed so much! If you liked the first season, then by all means watch the second as well. And if you do that, you absolutely must get your hands on the Christmas Specials (there are 2 of them, but they tell one story), or else you'll miss the

happy ending

and be depressed for months to come!

Doctor Who, Last Tango In Halifax, NCIS, True Detective, Hollow Crown (so excited for the next installment), Star Trek (all except Voyager)...

I love that. And it's kind of true... In the literary adaptations especially, some actors keep reappearing (there's this one guy who has been almost every Dickens villain there is, from Pecksniff to Mr Murdstone), and right now, I'm watching Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu in The Musketeers. And the props... well, yeah, I keep going wait - haven't I seen this pot / sword / hat / telephone before?

 

Doesn't bother me at all, though. I'm a creature of habit, and I love things that are familiar. I actually enjoy meeting "old friends" in new productions.

 

Frankly, the last time I was impressed by a BBC series was the Garrow series, I have always been an ITV/Granada fan: Father Brown, Morse, Lewis, Rumpole, Sherlock Holmes for real, Kavanagh Q.C., Dalgliesh, Brother Cadfael, Hornblower , Lord Peter Wimsey, Albert Campion, etc.

All the major detectives are to be found there. What Auntie Beeb does best is adaptations of classical works, like Dickens, Austen and such like.

 

Hm, let me see... Sherlock, Parades End, The Office, Yes Minister, As Time Goes By and various old comedy shows from the 70s... Yup, I'm a BBC girl through and through. :lol:

Our local public TV station has about 4 channels, one of which is all UK all the time. Everytime I turned it on, I was going "oh, I just saw her on House of Cards! Hey, that guy was on Endeavor!" Now I know why.

It seems like most broadcast stations have more than one channel these days, but I haven't checked to see whether that's true of our local PBS outlet (WFYI).  Yup, they've got channel 20.1, 20.2, and 20.3 -- 20.2 seems to be about half Spanish-language (e.g., Plaza Sesame) -- but I don't offhand see any great increase in British programming over what we used to get on just the one analog channel.  But that's OK -- they do run Masterpiece (which includes Sherlock), and I wouldn't expect the BBC to run a lot of American programming.

Yah, we're pretty lucky. Right now they're rebroadcasting Poldark and Jewel in the Crown. I guess WETA is pretty well funded.

I don't remember how many public television stations I have. My local had 2 channels before hd came in. The 2nd one did weather all day till 6pm when it switched to the talk stuff. I know I have at least 4 with the hd line up but I'm sure none of them are only British shows. Will need to double check.

I finally figured out what it is that really bothers me about Game of Thrones.

 

I was introduced to the series when it first came to Germany by my best friend, who has great taste, and I sort of got into it only to find myself soon repelled, even though I always thought and still think that the quality of the TV series as well as the books is exceptionally high, especially compared to the standard fantasy fare. At first I thought it was just the incredible level of violence and cruelty that was too much for me, but... usually, with this beloved person, I can watch really heavy stuff and enjoy it. She sat me through the Millenium trilogy, the original Swedish version rated 18 even in my liberal country, and Fight Club and all sorts of things. But GoT... nah... it just rubbed me up the wrong way and I couldn't quite say why. Until now.

 

I'm currently reading a book about the Tudors. And as I turn page after page full of intrigue, murder, injustice, hypocrisy, torture, rape and plunder, I felt myself reminded of Game of Thrones all the f*****g time. The series is celebrated for being "realistic", and it sure is, in spite of dragons and undead creatures and dire wolves and what not. It's like a history book. And that is precisely what bothers me. I do not watch television or read novels, especially not fantasy, to find myself confronted with exactly the same horrible s**t that has happened and is still happening in our world every damn day. If I want to know about that, I read factual books and magazines about our past and present (or I just listen to my history buff husband talk). From fiction, I want something better. "Not so much a picture of life, but a living alternative to it", as someone once described Charles Dickens' writing.

 

Well. Now I've figured that out, I can move on. It is too bad, because Game of Thrones is a really well made show with terrific actors. But in my opinion, they should have just done some period reenactment.

Has anyone here seen Fringe?   Good show.  Watching for Dr. Walter Bishop is reason enough;  he totally makes the show.  H and I have been binge watching it on Amazon Prime.

My Fav serious is SHERLOCK, of course.  Before that... well, it's hard to say because I'm not a regular TV watcher.  I don't even own a television.  I had shows I could watch on Hulu or Netflix that I have enjoyed, but enjoying them didn't make them a favorite.  REMINGTON STEEL was a favorite way back when.  

 

For me to have a true favorite show, I pretty much need to obsess over it, and most shows just don't take me to that level...even as I said, i can enjoy them.  But SHERLOCK threw me into another dimension.
