Just be careful not to leave the cake out in the rain -- though only someone far older than you (like maybe Albus Dumbledore) is likely to even have a clue why I'd say that (especially this part).

Somehow, I always knew that the Brits were unstable when it came to belonging to bigger unions, something to do with Rule Britannia and never being slaves, but honestly, the referendum result was so close that I feel hugely disappointed! Europe should with time become a United States of Europe, much like the American prototype, but I guess Jules Verne had seen it all coming, a century ago, when the European Prime Minister received his British counterpart and consoled him with the fact that he shouldn't complain about being marginalised, he still had Gibraltar, after all! And that piece was written right about the time of the original ACD stories, with the British Empire at its peak!

I believe it's the cake crammed in your mouth that we're all deducing, my dear chipmunk.

Johnspec, I've locked all the doors, hopefully we have her trapped.

Being neither British nor European, I have no idea what to make of this, except to say I hope Britain hasn't just made a huge mistake. I tend to believe in safety in numbers, but then I would, wouldn't I? (Since I'm an American, I mean.) And I see the markets have fallen already.

It appears that the US is split about 50/50 how we should progress into the future, too. What's going on, why is everyone so divided from everyone now? Interesting. And more than a bit scary.

I suspect this will actually be good for the UK in the foreseeable future. According to the BBC, they've been contributing more to the EU than they've been getting back. Apparently it would be possible to maintain certain ties with Europe even after leaving the union, so some of the mutual benefits should remain.

I don't even see mainland Europe as a natural union, at least not in the short term. There's too much history, including differing languages. (The British colonies that were to become the US were far more homogenous.)

Is it good for Europe, or the world as a whole, though? Saw a lot of dire predictions about how it will adversely affect the world's economy.

We shall see, shan't we? I hope it all works out for the best, but I have my doubts. But I haven't really studied the matter either ... as I said, my instinct is that it's better safer in general to be part of a group than to stand alone. But if the group's going over a cliff together, that's not exactly true either! And being safe isn't everything. Anyway, I wish them all well, not just Britain.

Hard to predict at this point, really, but if I had to guess I don't think it'll benefit Britain much. The EU pretty much has to play hardball now when handling the Brexit - if the UK is even perceived as keeping too many benefits while avoiding the obligations that come with membership, other nations will follow with Leave votes of their own and the whole union will fold. Also, there's talk of Scotland having another Independence vote (since Scottish voters were against the Brexit) as well as an Ireland Unification vote, so the United Kingdom may end up a lot less united as a result of this .

eta: this was in reply to Carol. As for whether it's good for Europe/the world, your guess is as good as mine. Anyone's guess, methinks - a bit early to say.

Yes, I saw that as well, that it could even mean the end of the United Kingdom. To me, that would be truly sad ... I tend to favor unity, not dissolution. Oh well, I guess we have once again been cursed with interesting times.....

Indeed. Also, no matter the financial or political ramifications, the Brexit means a lot of unnecessary hurdles at best and huge problems at worst for a lot of people on a personal level ... mixed marriages, exchange students, expats and the like. My heart goes out to everyone who got caught in this, hang in there :(.
