Before we move on, can I quietly say that I am very kind of utterly disappointed dispirited nevermind that Inge didn't actually say J.P has monkey face out of the blue nevermind. :p

{For the record, I call my best friends monkeys and vice versa, it's an endearing way for us and sort of a legitimation that someone is officially in the inner circle. (I am not kidding, judge me XD)}

She didn't? Never mind!

Ummm.... (wracks brain).

What do we think, does Sherlock wear cologne? I see reference to it in fanfics and it always surprises me, I wouldn't have thought he would care for such frivolities. But maybe posh men don't find it frivolous, but a necessity? I seldom notice a man wearing cologne, and if I do notice, I think I assume that means he used too much.

Okay, bad. Best I can do at the moment! :d

Never mind, I'll leap on it! Yes, I think he does. I think it's part of his whole image, it goes along with his hair, his suits and his coat. And hair like that would take forever to get decent.

I'm not sure about cologne, but I do think he uses an expensive and subtly-perceptible after shave.

(Don't most clean-shaven men use some sort of after shave?  Or is that just the U.S./my region?)

What actually bothers me is that Sherlock usually has a men's manicure (filed, low profile nails with a buff job).  That always annoys me, because I picture his hands being much more rugged.  One fan fic author pointed out that the original ACD portrayal mentioned calluses, stains from chemicals, and small acid burns, and that's always what I have imagined: that he has the hands of someone who uses them every day.

Hmmmm, I didn't think the word cologne sounded right; on the other hand, I'm pretty sure that's what is usually referred to in fics. But, yeah, aftershave I can see. I think he's just about that fussy about his person, but not more.

Weird point about the hands, I'e never noticed but yea that seems really wrong. Hm.

I've always used cologne and aftershave interchangeably. I know they are different, but I've never really thought about it tbh.

I think the difference between cologne and aftershave is the intent -- or at least the purported intent.  A guy may wear aftershave simply because he thinks that's the normal thing to do.  It's what his father did.  On the other hand, it's a perfect excuse for a man who likes to wear a scent but doesn't want to be thought effeminate.  I think a man would have to be pretty damn confident to wear actual cologne.  (And come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard of a man wearing perfume.)

As for Sherlock, it would seem odd to me for him to wear cologne, since it serves no practical purpose.  But if he believes the hype about "tightening one's pores" or whatever, then he might wear aftershave, and of course he'd pick one that he liked the smell of.

I don't have any problem with Sherlock having a manicure.  It's not illogical to be neat.  But that doesn't mean he wouldn't have the occasional chemical stain.

Well, I actually just looked up aftershave vs. cologne ... (don't ask me why, god knows I have real work to do  ) Aftershave is meant to be used to hydrate and soothe the skin, and cologne is just fragrance. Aftershave has higher (rubbing) alcohol content, and antiseptic properties in case the shaver is nicked. It has 1-3% perfume oil, so it can be used for just the scent, but it won't last as long.

Cologne, on the other hand, has 2 to 5% perfume oil, and as a result, costs more. It's purpose is fragrance, and it's meant to be applied in much the way women apply perfume; wrists, neck, etc. and not on the whole jaw, as with aftershave. (But it can be if that's what the user is going for.)

Ergo, I stand by my previous comment, and I'll add John into the mix; I think they both wear aftershave, but not cologne! (Oh gawd, how much longer does this hiatus go on...... )

Yea, knowing the difference definitely aftershave over cologne. Something expensive but not overly strong. John I think would only wear it on a date. Except now he's married :(

Well, now he just wears it when he wants to signal to Mary he's feeling "romantic."   :D

And, the thought occurs that the original Holmes probably wore some sort of aftershave; wasn't Bay Rum (or Bay Rhum) the popular scent during the Victorian era?

This also justifies Sherlock using some product in those curls of his, because it is canon-compliant: the original Holmes surely used some sort of pommade.

Hiatus, hiatus, hiatus.....

100% behind the aftershave lotion, since it's what most men without a beard use! In Sherlock's case, he might go for something from Yardley or Floris, especially since he recognised the latter brand in TBB.

He did? I must not have noticed that. What was the context?

P.S.: That's a cute new avatar, Inge!

At first I thought it's unruly crumpled tie, then I thought it's Sherlock in his coat doing something funny.

I don't mind BC's hands eventhough they are not accurate from description in SIS :p, but it's very good point. Is it because it's too troublesome to have 'hand makeup', and it will need good lighting effort to show those calluses and stains because everything else is pale?

Anyway, I think Sherlock would be more sexy with 'working hand', but it may be too tedious to achieve that while maintaining Lord Byron's look.

Random thought about Sherlock, if Sherlock were active in relationship, is it likely that his break-up line is "it's not me, it's definitely you?"

Lol, yes! Followed by an excruciatingly long, unbelievably fast litany of all of that person's faults and the things they've done that he's found intellectually offensive.

And all in the name of doing them a favor by "helping them with their problems."

I had a boyfriend like that once (not that he reminded me of Sherlock in any other way).

Dear Carol, couldn't resist CatLock! Floris was the liquid soap in the cheating stock trader's bathroom and the hand cream for his PA ( interestingly, BC's girlfriend at the time, they do like to keep the show in the family!).
