I'll try it, certainly!

We have a very famous and funny pastiche here in France, "Arsène Lupin contre Herlock Sholmes" (which btw gave the alias to one of the members here).

Next to be seen: "God's own country", which happens to be Mark Gatiss's favourite movie these days :), accirding to some FB pages!

Holy smoke, I watched a musical, yes, The Greatest Showman.

We wanted to catch some movies and went for marathon of Jumanji and The Greatest Showman.

Somehow I thought it's something like The Prestige. Being a fan of it, and coincidentally also played by Hugh Jackman, I went for it.

It was only when we had the tickets in our hand that I slowly looked at the poster and felt horrified.

But it was a good show, some of the singing are good, and there are stories to tell with the singing although some others are too much for me. Overall, I actually enjoyed it, it looks gorgeously classic although the story is predictable. 7/10

Jumanji, I enjoyed it too. That is how a sequel should be, different but similar. Some sequels are carbon copies of the original and that is annoying (Hangover, Home Alone, Ice Age) but Jumanji is fun. It's also relatable as I used to play games and I think, maybe, if I feel jaded with life one day, it would be interesting to enter Jumanji's world. Some parts are lol moments and I like The Rock, so it's good time. It's probably high but wth, 8/10.

I also watched Downsizing, I'm the sucker of what-ifs, this kind of sci-fi concept. The idea is pretty good, but the execution...blah.

The movie barely scratches the surface, boring and misses a lot of potential it could have. 5/10

I love The Rock. :d

Coco 8/10

Fun, but predictable

The hitman's bodyguard 6/10

This one required waaay to much suspension of disbelief imo

Inside out 8/10

I switched school and moved to a different house, so I relate way to much to Riley

Journey to the centre of the earth 6/10

The movie based on the novel of the same name has the same unbelievable nonsense as the novel did

Atomic Blonde - 7/10

Yes, story lacks, but action kicks butt. Including one specific scene that honestly is one of the better action sequences in movie history.

The Last Jedi.

It left me… satisfied. With a good feeling and teary-eyed.

No SFX gone wild, but some stunning visuals (that salt desert! The Foxes!) I've heard that filmmakers went back to the old ways of miniatures, costumes and puppets. It definitely feels more "palpable" compared to the Ep 1-3. It definitely made me feel like the old spirit of SW was back, but at the same time it feels "grown up" compared to very simple fairytale-like storylines of Ep 4-6. Nothing is simply black or white any more.

And if you ask me, there is no need for a next movie.

Watching Carrie made it especially emotional. And, hell, Mark Hamill has an enormous presence for a guy of his unspectacular looks. It was like in the old good days of Return of the Jedi.

There were surely some flaws, but I don't want to think about them now.

Okay, Supreme Leader Snoke was one. Especially because the title is what the Kim "dynasty" is called in North Korea, which strikes me as pathetic and laughable. Imperator sounded much better.

Oh yeah, that salt desert was amazing! The most imaginative thing in the movie.

Great that you liked it, J.P.! I have been hearing so much negativity about the film, it's nice to get a different perspective. As soon as the DVD comes out and I have a chance to see it in English, I will. Looking forward to it now.

And actually so simple. Two colors and I couln't take my eyes of it.

What I also liked, they had a normal looking woman in one of the important parts.

What negatives have you been hearing about it, just out of curiosity?  I mostly see people talking about how great it was, lol.

More reading than hearing. Most reviews I came across were very critical.

Leia, you mean? :P

Actually, I'm guessing you mean Rose. Wasn't she fabulous? Even though that segment of the plot seemed rather pointless.

Most of the reviews/comments I've seen about it have been a mixed bag. I'm pretty much that way myself ... there were some great bits, but the overall impression was that it was very uneven. Like they couldn't decide whether they were making a children's movie or a Serious Adult Film. The combination didn't always work for me. But it was far from the worst movie I've ever seen, and there was some really good stuff too.

To me it feels like it was made for us, the First Viewers, who grew up with the old Trilogy. Or for the children in us.
Okay, too many important characters with intertwining storylines make the whole tale a bit blurred.

And really, I still think that they failed in creating a really scary main villain. I'm so unimpressed by Snoke.

I have to admit that I had some serious problems with VII, and that mostly due to the actors. I cannot stand Poe (I remember praying to the Force: "please don't make him being Han's son, even if he's behaving like Han") The same for Kylo, even if I can imagine why they have chosen him. Couldn't find a real connection to Ray either. I think I need my old heroes, it's a shame they killed of Han so soon. And now all of them are taken from us - by the story or RL. I don't really feel like needing the ninth part of the saga.

Note to self - watch VII again.

Oh, I really like Rey. Rei. Ray. However you spell it. But I heartily agree on Poe -- he's not charming at all, he's just annoying. Plus I don't get why he's in the story, he doesn't add anything. But Rey (Rae?) made up for all of that in the first movie, I thought she was terrific. And I still like her here.

But I know what you mean; on the whole, I'd rather watch Luke and company.

Rey.

Meh. I don’t care for Rey.

Posted

Too many characters. You don't manage to care for them all. But still I had a good feeling of satisfaction coming out of the cinema. It doesn't happen too often.

Posted

I don’t care for almost any of them, lol. (Just especially not Rey.) Even the ones I like I’m only so-so about. I still liked the movie though.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror".  I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, despite the Nazi-centric storyline which I'm never terribly fond of.

Somehow it just sank in that these Rathbone films are modernized versions of Sherlock Holmes, for their time, just like the BBC series is.

Favorite moments:

Holmes' opening deductions when he meets the council, just to throw it in the faces of those who didn't want him there and said he wasn't good enough for their superspecial government mission.

Mrs. Hudson don't care.
"Case?  The greatest case of our career!"
"Oh mercy, it always is."

Years working together and Watson's still criticizing Holmes for seeming so calm and uncaring in the face of death and disaster.

Holmes calls the radio station and asks them to play the same song twice in a row, because he "likes it."

"No no no no!  Holmes, you promised."  While BBC Watson is always trying to get BBC Holmes to make an appearance in the deerstalker, this Watson is trying to get Holmes to stop  wearing the deerstalker, lol.

No one likes Holmes.  No one wants Holmes around.  Holmes is gonna sit at your table and hang in your hideout and be on your secret council anyway.

"Unfriendly, what?"
"Unspeakably."

Heroic lines and saving the world.
"I don't think we're safe."
"No one in the world is safe now, Watson, least of all us."

The knife-throwers of Hamburg are extremely expert.

Holmes is impervious to your measly death threats.
"For 10 long years, I've been sitting down there in Dartmoor [prison].  For the whole 10 years, one thing's been preying on my mind."
"Only one?"

Watson has a gun.  Watson will use his gun.  Watson is reaching for his gun.  Don't threaten Holmes.

Holmes is full of sarcasm.
"Some fellow took a shot at me."
"What do you make of it, Watson?"
"Bullet wound."
"Congratulations [on a brilliant bit of deduction]."

"And so, gentlemen, until we meet again, as I hope we will..." (Not.)

"Holmes, I think we're being followed."
"Yes, I know.  It's Lloyd."
"Lloyd?  How do you know?"
"He's so obvious about it."

A walking stick as a weapon.  A walking stick as a flashlight.  A walking stick as comic relief.  A walking stick as pretty much anything you need it to be.

Gesundheit.

"You're absolutely right, Watson--"
(Watson so pleased.)
"--Except for one thing."
(Watson so disappointed.)

"There's an east wind coming."

The scarf.  The coat.  The curls.  The snark.

Oh god, now I have to see it!

I didn't realize Rathbone's was an updated version either until Moftiss pointed it out. He's just the version I grew up with!

I know!

^ Is that just a movie or series? Where do you watch it?

It's pretty hard to find classic, and ordering online is always expensive.

Anyone watched All The Money in The World?

Didn't remember the actual event, and didn't remember Kevin Spacey replacement by Christopher Plummer. Well Christopher is so good I'm wondering why they didn't cast him in the first place, it's age appropriate too.

Not knowing always works better for me. Although it's slow, I enjoy the movie. I thought it was going to turn into mafia gangster or heroic action stuffs and pleasantly surprised it's not. It's not explored deeply, but I like Mark Whalberg's character there. 7/10

I really wanted to see "All the Money in the World", but haven't had the chance to.  I'll probably try to rent it or something when it comes out.

It's a series of movies.  I think there are 14 of them?  I've been recording them on TV as I've seen them played, but I don't catch them all.  I've been able to watch a few on Amazon Prime for free.  I had considered buying the entire set, but like you said, expensive.

^ Hey, almost the same as the number of episodes of "Sherlock".

The Post. 10/10. Probably helps if you lived through that era. And I always like "reporter as hero" stories.

PS -- the Basil Rathbone movies are pretty easy to find on, ahem, YouTube....
