Irrelevant sidebar:  The time when I lived in Cedar Rapids overlapped by almost a year the time that Elijah Wood lived there, and CR is a pretty small place, so you'd think we might have bumped into one another at some point.  (Of course, he was just a baby then.)

You met his mother.

I think she was talking about me.  Have I been deleted?  Would I be able to tell?

Oh, of course -- I could have met him in utero!  (Frodo the Fetus?)

I think she's talking about Elijah. We may have to call in the knights of Gondor to defend his honor.

Can I make fun of you guys comparing the 'almost meet' celebrities? :D :cowdance:

Me no. Never meet and never almost meet any celebrities I care about.

Some time I lived in a place where Turkish celebrities lived.

I was like you but If the subject is Al Pacino, I don't know.

I need to live.

If I met Benedict Cumberbatch on a subway, I'm pretty sure I would stutter worse than Molly and flee the train. :picard2:

I simply wouldn't believe it was him because it would seem so unlikely. I would go home and say to my husband "I saw a guy on the train today who looked awfully like a famous actor. It was uncanny. The poor man probably gets pestered by fans all the time."

Yeah, it'd be hard to believe.  I've been in that sort of situation only a few times, and I tend to assume that it's a look-alike until/unless I have reason to believe otherwise.  When I saw Alfred Hitchcock crossing a street, I first thought it was just a guy who happened to look like him, until I remembered seeing in the paper that he was going to be in town.  When I saw one of my favorite singers (Mike Kobluk of the Chad Mitchell Trio, if anyone here is old enough to remember them) coming toward me on the sidewalk, I thought he reminded me of Mike Kobluk.  It wasn't till just as he was passing me that I realized it really was him.  If he'd been on the other side of the street, I never would have gotten past the "reminds me of him" stage.

When I was in college a friend arranged for a bunch of us to go backstage at a Seals and Crofts concert (anyone else remember them? ) I was so embarrassed, I couldn't wait to get out of there. They were really nice, but I just felt like we were intruding and couldn't think of a think to say. I shook Dash Croft's hand really hard as a joke, but he didn't seem particularly amused. Gah.

It was a really good concert though. :cowdance:

Fun fact: Dash Crofts has a twin sister named Dot. :d

Since his name is actually Darrell, I would guess that hers might be Dorothy. But a Google search turned up a photo of them as kids -- just search on Dash Crofts sister.

If I was in London, I would think they are real people, because it seems to be pretty common for celebs to use the subway. In case of Ben I would know where to look to check if he's real, the same with Andrew or Mark or Steven or Sue…
Flying back from London I sat beside a guy who looked a lot like short haired version of James Rhodes. But it's hard to secretly stare on someone who's sitting next to you and, unlike the folks above, I hadn't seen him in RL yet. Anyway, the first thing I did after coming home, was to check where he was at that time

I am rereading a lot of Dickens at the moment and in Great Expectations, I stumbled across the following statement from the narrator, Pip, about his flatmate: "Herbert was my friend and intimate companion".

I find it really interesting that there's a distinction made between those. This is Dickens so I think we can 100% rule out any hint at homosexuality, especially since Pip is pining nonstop for Estella. I knew the expression "intimidate friend" as a Victorian version of what we would call a close friend or best friend. But what is an intimate companion and how is that different from a friend? Is it that "heterosexual life partner" thing that someone mentioned around here?

Posted

Maybe it's two ways of saying more or less the same thing, for emphasis and/or clarification. Like "aid and abet" (sorry, lousy example, but all that comes to mind at the moment).

Or ... one can have friends, with whom you share a laugh or a movie, and one can have intimate friends, to whom you pour out your woes or turn to for support in times of trouble, etc. That's the distinction that occurs to me.

True.  But wouldn't the former generally be thought of as a subset of the latter?  Hmm, maybe not.  So you're saying a person might have some friends that they enjoy going out to dinner with or playing cards or whatever (but they wouldn't confide in), and have other friends with whom they feel comfortable enough to spill their guts (but wouldn't enjoy playing p0ker).  So Pip is saying this guy is a member of the rare breed who can be both.

I think intimate as in disclosing you heart/soul. Not all are suitable for that, and not all are suitable for just play mates.

There is a Venn diagram where they intersect somewhere.

Yep, that's more or less it. I think I've only ever had one friend that I would consider to be both.

I think "friend" is sometimes used rather loosely too; sometimes it's used to mean "someone with whom I am cordially acquainted." Not the same thing to me, but Facebook seems to think they are.

I tend to refer to "cordial acquaintences" by how i know them -- such as "a coworker" or "a classmate" or "a neighbor." It's the easiest way to avoid calling someone a "friend" when they aren't really.
