Please not to forget Stamford: the guy who brought the pair together is an actual JohnLocker in real life. There was a very funny post of him about a couple of months ago wearing a T-shirt with Stamford's Matchmaking Agency on it holding two of those knitted figurines of Sherlock and Dr Watson.

... I saw this pic under the set shots of John's flat....

I can remember three places where John has lived -- that "bedsit" in SiP, Baker Street, and the house where he and Mary lived. I might refer to the first two as apartments/flats, but I don't think you're referring to either of them. What am I forgetting?

In SiP it was a hotel/hostel room.

What is amazing though that the collective fandom memory is capable of finding out things like this. Because you cannot recognize things by such tiny fragments if you haven's seen them before. Mycroft isn't the Wikipedia. We are. :D

I take that back! Alex and I watched the DVD extra about this place, and it is indeed just a flat / apartment. It's on the ground floor, and only the ground floor. The bedroom (which I had assumed was upstairs) is behind the kitchen, and if those indoor stairs go anywhere (on the set, they don't), it's to another flat.

The Watson flat is in a suburban terraced house area, and it seems to occupy the ground floor and the basement or area [spoiler deleted] and there is a flight of stairs leading to the ground floor in the same. And if they hadn't chosen Houdini, they wouldn't have led the JohnLockers by the nose yet again. The 'poem' is very sensible advice for hunters, and is a nursery rhyme.

That's roughly how I thought the flat / house was laid out, but no, not according to the DVD extra. What appears to be a semi-detached house is actually divided up. The Watson flat consists only of what you referred to as the basement or area, but is actually at ground level (and what looks like the main level is actually up one flight from the street). They showed very clearly that the Watsons' living room, kitchen, bedroom, etc., are all on that same level.

 

It's the interior stairs that make it seem like a multi-level dwelling, but according to the DVD, they actually lead to a common area or to another flat. My guess would be that the building used to be an actual semi-detached house, but then it got divided up into flats, so that some stairs no longer go anywhere useful.

 

Of course, the above applies only to the studio set used for the interior. The actual structure shown in exterior shots may be laid out entirely differently.

In response to the OP:

 

I don't ship anyone in the show.  My view of Sherlock and John, based on what I see in the material presented, is that John is straight, and Sherlock is either gray/asexual or straight but celibate.  I don't really see any subtext, I tend to take their statements at face value.

 

In regards to the questioning/assuming of their sexuality by other characters, I had a close friend like that once, and people did the same thing to us all the time.  So I don't see any "messages" in it, just a portrayal of something real people do.

 

Everyone is free to their own ideas, of course.
