Artemis, I haven't had any nemeses, exactly, but I have had people take a strong dislike to me without me ever knowing why.  Well, I did find out at one place; someone else thought they were going to get the job I ended up getting, and the whole department resented me on her behalf and did little petty things to let me know it. Fortunately that time I had a decent supervisor who saw what was going on and told them in no uncertain terms to cut it out. They still weren't friendly but they stopped pulling crap. I eventually transferred to a better position. (Oddly enough, this was in a library too! Is there something about libraries that makes the staff a little ... er, hostile?)

Two other times were volunteer positions, and I still don't know what I did that set these people off, but they both ended up trying to find ways to hurt me, mostly by bad-mouthing me to other members of the group. Fortunately (again) I had a long standing and good relationship with most of the other members, so they backed me up. But the stress of dealing with it caused me to leave both those groups. I still don't understand why these two people hated me so much, or what they thought I did to them, and if anyone else understands it, they won't tell me. I'd like to know what I did, though, to set them off, so I can avoid it in the future.

Anyway, that doesn't help you much, because I'm afraid my solution in each of those situations was to finally move on to something else and leave the haters behind. I loved each of those organizations, but the stress wasn't worth it and I've been happy with whatever I replaced them with. But, yeah, it hurts to know you can, all unknowing, cause such vengeful feelings in people. Thank god, in my case, I also had champions on my side, or I wouldn't have lasted as long as I did.

I'm starting to wonder!  I recall Hikari mentioned something about issues with co-workers in a library, too.

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the books are self-destructing (because of the way paper is generally made for the last 100+ years) and it's affecting almost everyone that works/volunteers at a library.

:-D I love that scene.

I think my upstairs neighbor got SingStar for Christmas. It's the only logical explanation for the sounds that have been wafting down to our bedroom these past few nights. If she didn't have such a nice voice and decent taste in music, it would be torture, as it is, I just wonder why it never seems to occur to her that 2 a.m. is not an appropriate time to sing "Hallelujah" at the top of her lungs.

I know this sounds sexist, but I wonder if the fact that the staff is mostly women has anything to do with it. In my experience, women in the workplace tend to be more catty towards each other....

My library was pretty evenly split between men and women as it happens. But yes, I got on A LOT better with the men. Though some of the women were cool too, usually the ones just as blunt and dry as I was.

There was one girl who I disliked immediately and had to work pretty much alone with on Friday nights. She was tall, slim, blonde and extremely attractive, and I thought 'oh, fantastic, she's going to be completely full of herself' but she was actually great fun and we used to have a good laugh once I stopped being intimidated by her.

What idiot makes eye masks and then writes 'avoid contact with eyes' on the back of the pack?

Yeesh, I started watching a true crime program called 'Dead Silent.' I need to delete the rest of them, it's going to put me off hiking and jogging, and I'm already too scared to do the former on my own, and very wary about the latter.

Are you talking about a cosmetic cream or an object worn to keep light out of your eyes at night?  In either case, sounds like the manufacturer is just covering their behind, what with all the lawsuits these days.

I used to use a flat, slightly padded sleep mask (of the second kind) and was very happy with it.  But then I got a nasty eye infection and wondered if the mask had contributed to its development, due to always becoming a bit moist around my eyes by morning.  So I tossed that one out and found a type with a molded shape so that it doesn't touch my eyelids, and I like that one even better.  I can lie in bed at night with my eyes wide open and believe that it's pitch black in my bedroom.  Kinda cool.

They were gel pads that sit under the eye and have some sort of moisturising stuff on 'em. I know they're covering themselves from being sued incase someone has a hideous reaction, but things like that get on my pip. It's like the time I bought a bag of nuts, and on the back there was a warning saying 'may contain nuts.' That annoyed me too. Oh, and whilst I'm on a roll, another thing that irritates me in the way of pointless and stupid signs are when we have terrible weather, and on the big electronic signs on the motorway they put up 'Warning, poor driving conditions.' Yes, I can bloody well SEE that. And of course, even worse, when they put that sign up when the weather is fine and dandy.

I'm mystified by Pinterest at the moment. I use it a fair bit, and of course every time I pin something I get similar suggestions popping up (there's a LOT of Sherlock stuff on there). But it's suddenly decided I'm interested in K-pop. I have no idea why, I haven't pinned anything related to K-pop, I don't even know who most of these people or fandoms are. It's not even coming from one board, like the time someone I followed randomly opened a Latina board and I kept getting quirky gifs about what a feisty Latina I apparently am. Took me a while to track down the culprit of that, but I clicked what was causing it in the end. No idea about the K-pop though.

I find the Pinterest website a bit frustrating to navigate, which is a shame, because I've just discovered the wealth of "Sherlock" material on there (as the rest of you can see, lol).

I think that would worry me -- whadda they mean, MAY contain nuts?  And may not, I suppose!  So what are the other possibilities?

I am sufficiently irked at Pinterest that when a Google search turns up something there, I generally just skip it.  I was originally pissed because every time I tried to view a page, they'd give me a couple seconds and then cover most of it over with a sign-up ad.  Haven't noticed that lately, but now that I'm allowed to see what's there, as you say, I'm having a terrible time actually finding anything (including whatever it was that Google turned up).  So phooey on 'em!

Yep, I was a bit concerned by the 'may contain nuts' too. I hope it DOES contain nuts, and nowt else!

Noooooooooo...... That explains why the last nut was so flat and plasticky. It was the bag. I'm so ashamed.

I am mildly addicted to advice columns (yes, I am weird) and I keep noticing how many questions relate to weddings.

Why is the celebration of people getting married such a minefield? And do people really regularly make such a big deal out of it all as it seems to me?

Like, I have read about brides specifying which color(s) the guests should wear and couples expecting everybody to travel to whatever destination they thought was romantic.

I know one family personally that spent several months' income on their daughter's wedding only to have the couple break up during the honeymoon.

All sounds perfectly awful to me. Thank goodness I don't have many friends so the chances of me being invited to large functions is slim.

I admire Sherlock for staying at John and Mary's wedding for as long as he did. Do you think he maybe took a little something in advance so he could stand it...? :-P

(Yes, I am married myself, but there was no party. We just went to the registry office with our families and my best friend as an honorary sister, my father-in-law said a blessing over us to satisfy the religious people involved and then we had brunch at home. I am not saying that should be enough for everybody but why is the custom so extreme?)

I'm horrified at how much some people spend on weddings. Put it towards a house. Put it towards actually having a life together. Blowing it all on a single day seems crazy to me.

That is better explanation on why my snacks tasted funny sometimes. I am so horrified with mom's friend chewing on crispy cockroach by accident I always choose to continue chewing or swallow nervously without trying to look.

I think I read in vacuum cleaner box before, the warning is Do not insert body part. Not sure if it's this one, I also remember some warning that specifically mentioned genital. :O

Speaking of wedding, I always want to ask Americans. Well, blame it on stuffs I saw on TV.

Is it right that wedding is funded by parents? Well it is in Friends, and other shows I can't remember. I remember making face about Monica and Ross expecting their parents to pay for their wedding (which Ross did, on his second wedding, and he is well to do ffs)

We don't have specific culture, but mostly responsible independent adults would try to pay the wedding ourselves, we did although many people I know rely on their parent's wealth and effort. Don't throw party you can't afford. Don't bask in glam and show off that is not yours. But again, I probably just have unpopular view.

And rehearsal, is that really a thing? But why on earth do you need to rehearse? It's not performance. Yes, it's probably limited invitations for close friends and family. But those people are expected to attend twice, wearing two outfits and listen to the same speech and joke? Isn't one torturing enough?

And bridezilla.

I had fun reading about bridezille, although why one wants to be bridezilla's bridesmaids is beyond me.

Bridezilla is the term for demanding bride to be who acts like a diva and force her bridemaids to comply, some includes demands for the bridemaids to lose weight. I probably would smear cake on the bride's face and walk off. Why some bridemaids are receptive to those treatments?

The vacuum cleaner one doesn't surprise me. Men being what they are. Though I do wonder if anyone really does it.

Cockroach, eurgh. This was bad enough.

I don't get the bridezilla thing either. But I guess if she's that much of a b*tch as a bride she must have been pretty bad already and yet they chose to stay friends with her.
