What other TV shows do you watch?

That’s why I avoid watching the news. Though I did put alerts on my phone after we had a big terror attack and I had no idea it had happened. Did it affect my life whether I knew or not? No. But it was something I should have known.

So why do you keep doing that?  Morbid fascination?

Because I'm afraid not to!! As the strapline of the W. Post says: "Democracy dies in darkness." Maybe it's the Minuteman in me, (yah, right 🙄) but I feel obliged to be, er, vigilant.

Seriously, I don't understand why people feel obligated to keep up with everything that's gone wrong anywhere in the world.  It's depressing as hell, there's hardly ever anything they can do about it, and any time there's a truly major item they'll hear about it anyway.

On the other hand (you knew there would be another hand, right? 😉 ) I don't understand how some people can have so little interest in the world. It's not like their own little corner is so riveting or important as to occupy all their time.

Of course, maybe it is to them; but I don't get it. I suspect some of it is the way I was raised, some of it is personality, some of it is education … etc., but I just like to know stuff. And really, I don't keep up half as much as some people I know. Which is nice, because then they can tell me what I missed.

Oh god, who the hell watches TLC?! Every time they have a trailer for a show it looks like something I'd rather shoot myself than watch.

It's not that I have no interest in the rest of the world.  It's just that "the news" doesn't often cover the sorts of things I'm curious about.

Yup, that too.

Well, there you go. I don't feel "obligated" to keep up … I  try to keep up because I'm interested, or because I think it's important. Fair enough?

On a completely separate note … does anyone else watch Agents of SHIELD? Every once in awhile I think it's really interesting and then I have to miss an episode or two and can't be bothered to watch them later, even though they're free online. Part of my problem, I think, is that I love most of the characters but can barely stand Daisy, or whatever her name of the week is. But she seems to be taking over the show. Whhhyyyyyeee?????

I deleted the news apps because it errored often, now I'm living under the rock.

It's peaceful in a way, but there are probably important things that I miss, because I don't socialize and have disabled all my social media (which seems to be where most people get their news from, which is appaling for me). I think I have to reinstall some.

@agent of shield. Haven't watched it. Any good? My source is hardly reliable lately, so I'm not keen to start watching something new, but want to dig on older series ot series I got from my brother.

I have Fringe, Dexter, the Suit. Anyone watched those?

Never even heard of the Suit.

Shield … I don't know. Sometimes I think it's really good, but other times I'm a bit … bored? I want to like it better than I do, I think. I want to like something that's actually on TV! Not something that may or may not reappear again some day … sigh.

Fairly surprising, but I've just done a search on this forum and turned up no comments about The Crown (Netflix, 2016 - ).

I won't attribute Harry & Meghan's recent wedding as being the sole catalyst to my current interest in the history of the House of Windsor.    My interest in this subject is more closely tied to the fact that Queen Elizabeth II, who has been the sovereign of Great Britain far longer than I have been alive, celebrated her 65th year on the throne this year, and is shortly due to celebrate her 71st wedding anniversary to her 'rock', Prince Philip.  Her Maj's son and and heir Charles, is going to be 70 years old on his birthday in November (Chas was born almost a year to the day of his parents' marriage), making him the longest-waiting heir to a throne ever.  Cultivating and maintaining an air of enigmatic mystery around herself has been integral to the continued existence of the monarchy, and it has largely worked for Elizabeth for nearly seven decades.  She has staunchly followed the deathbed advice of her grandmother, Queen Mary, to 'never let them see the real Elizabeth' . .though what is good for the Crown is often detrimental to the human woman and her family behind the veil.  Creator Peter Morgan (The Queen) returns to his favorite subject, writing or co-writing all the episodes.  Series 1 opens with then-Princess Elizabeth's (Claire Foy) wedding to Philip in 1947, and fast-forwards through the first 5 years of their marriage to 1952 and the sudden death of her father, King George VI (Jared Harris, Game of Shadows).  Propelled to the throne at only 25 years old, the new Queen is largely unprepared to assume her role so soon and struggles with the constant pull of family vs. Duty.  John Lithgow appears (in an Emmy-winning performance) as ER's first and favorite Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.  Series 2 picks up with the 1956 Suez crises, the '10-year-itch' crises in the Royal marriage and the second stage of Elizabeth's reign.  Matt Smith plays the Duke of Edinburgh and he does some really stellar work in S2.  In Series 3 (now filming) the entire principal cast will be replaced with new actors.  Olivia Coleman (Broadchurch) will become the Queen, and Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones; Outlander) takes over for Matt Smith as Philip.

As a companion piece to John Lithgow's performance as the Bulldog of Britain, I highly recommend Gary Oldman's Oscar-winning turn as a wartime Churchill in Darkest Hour, which I have also reviewed in this space.

I have zero interest in the royal family, but I did think this was quite cute - the reactions of the actors are quite funny.

Looks like it could be good. Plus from the snippets it looks like Richard Madden gets to keep his own super-sexy Scottish accent so that's always a bonus.

Over the weekend I said goodbye to a group of people I have, through the medium of television, shared the better part of 14 years with . . the dedicated detectives & top brass of the Major Crimes division of the LAPD.  First we met them in The Closer (7 seasons, TNT) under the command of flaky yet formidable transplanted Southern Magnolia, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, played by Kyra Sedgwick.  If ever there was an adamantium fist inside a dainty lace glove, it was Brenda.  Executive producer Sedgwick said goodbye after 7 seasons, wanting to go out on top . .  and her squad was handed over, old personnel and some new faces, into the care of Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell)--a character who had been Brenda's nemesis in Internal Affairs for a long time before becoming a friend.  The clash of these two Titans--one Fire, one Ice . .one the irresistible Force, the other the Immovable Object--made for some really compelling drama over The Closer's final 2 seasons.

Showrunner James Duff moved his cast and production team seamlessly into Major Crimes.  Since the new show utilized the same sets, behind-the-scenes personnel, producers, writer-directors, cast and even the composer, MC felt less like a spin-off and more like The Closer, Part II.  Whereas Brenda Leigh as the Closer thrived on conflict and would use any means necessary in order to obtain a confession, her successor's MO was much more non-confrontational.  The hallmark of Capt. Raydor's method was making plea deals.  While this is probably far more realistic,  not to mention cost-saving . . such interrogation room compromise does leave a lot be desired from a dynamic standpoint.  So Duff and Co. attempted to fill the void by making the story line involving 'Rusty', Capt. Raydor's teenage street hustler-material witness-turned adoptive son into a very large piece of the proceedings.  Viewers were asked, many times per episode, to put down their investment in the squad's crime du jour (more often than not a grisly murder) to commiserate with Rusty through his angsting over a college major and navigating the dating world as a young gay man with Tons of Issues.  After all, when one has been abandoned by one's drug-addled mother at the age of 14 and forced to fend for oneself picking up johns on Hollywood Boulevard for several years, witnessing a brutal murder by a psychopath in the process--a psycho who may be coming back to kill you at any second--well, this is a lot of baggage to bring into a budding relationship.  In the end, it was Rusty and his endless whinging that kept Major Crimes from reaching the quality of its predecessor.  TNT agreed, cancelling the show even before the truncated 6th season had aired, despite still decent ratings.  Even with its weekly share of bloody, bloated, strangled fossilized or dismembered corpses, the show was deemed 'not edgy enough'.  The Rusty subplots did make it resemble a mash-up of Dawson's Creek & Queer Eye, Jr. meets Friends at times--far afield from what audiences who'd stayed loyal after the Closer had signed on for.

Despite the flaws, the other characters all had  moments to shine, both individually and collectively.  I'm really going to miss many of those people.  Rusty and his on-again-off-again BF Gus are not among them.  In a fit of pique at what he viewed as mistreatment from the network, Duff insured that there would be no resurrecting Major Crimes with some truly shocking cast developments as the season limped to its finish line.  Mary McDonnell achieved a near-impossible feat in rehabilitating Capt. Sharon Raydor from the Wicked Witch of LAPD IAD into a squad commander which her detectives came to love and respect and rally around as much as they had done for Chief Johnson.  Also it must be said that MMD is really holding up the side for women in their 60s to still be sexy, powerful and gorgeous--she's an inspiration to me . . (though my 60s are some ways off . .not far enough off, alas.)

TNT's decision seems very final, but I can't help holding out a sliver of hope for another spin-off called 'Flynn & Provenza'.  If any of you out there know of whom I speak, can I get an Amen?

Anyone watches Patrick Melrose?

Sorry if you guys had discussed it somewhere before, usually I'm the last to know.

I was flipping around and found it, and it stars our BC, and I tried to watch the first episode. I don't know how to feel about it yet, it feels like the plot is moving a bit too slow (I had time to form full scenarios forming in my mind while watching about the possible way to go) but the slow burn is nice in a way to see the mundane world of an addict and BC plays it really well (although I'm not one, I wouldn't know how accurate it is but it seems realistic). There are more than couple of time he reminds me of Sherlock. Having said that, I'm not in that urgent to do a follow-up watching unless it's convenient for me.

I've got Patrick Melrose there to watch but not got around to it yet. I think there is a thread on it somewhere.

You know how those TV shows come up sometimes that everyone in the country seems to be obsessed with? At the moment in this country it's BBC's drama/thriller Bodyguard, which I posted a trailer for a while back. I only started watching it last night because I hate waiting ages between episodes so I usually let them pile up - it's so good! I've only seen three eps yet, but so far I'd highly recommend it. Richard Madden plays the titular character, he's best known for playing Rob Stark in Game of Thrones, he never did much for me in that but in this he's sexy AF. I'm clearly drawn to darker characters. Anyway, yes, if any of you spot it on the TV anywhere definitely give it a go.

I liked Patrick Melrose much more than I thought I would, although I thought the fourth (I think?) episode was a bit unnecessary. Family dramas aren't usually my cup of tea, but the cinematography was gorgeous, which is always a big plus for me. (Hey, it's a visual medium, after all! ) And of course I enjoyed the performance of the lead actor, whatsisname…..

Yeah, that one! You know him too? He was in that little show that appeared from time to time but then would go off the air for years, I guess that's why his career never really took off, poor guy.

I've heard a rumour he's a shapeshifter and sometimes you can actually see him starting to change into a turtle onscreen just before the camera cuts away.

The bloke you guys are talking about, the detective from unknown show, weird looking sexy alien, that one, I see him naked all the time.

There are times when he is unhappy about it, or pretends to

But most of the time he is a show off.

The question has to be asked, since he normally likes showing off, what exactly did you catch him doing in the first one that has him so shocked? 😦

I'm not sure, I thought he was doing something indecent, or drawing something obscene.

I catch a lot of scribbles and doodles with a lot of balls!!!

Next to a book...weirdly there was nothing indecent with the book, it's just solar system and astronomy. But obviously he wasn't studying, I mean, who doesn't know that primary school crap?!?
