Looks like we won't have to make do with rumors and speculation much longer, we're starting to get actual Series 3 news.

Sherlockology has announced the picture below as "the first official image from Sherlock Series 3!"  Since it appears to be an actual frame from an episode, I will put it in a spoiler box, even though I would call it more of a mood piece:

Still no air dates, but here's news (from Sherlockology) of an opportunity to see "The Empty Hearse" in just a few weeks:

tumblr_inline_mvsglwBXls1qjn7nd.jpg

The first chance to see the new series of Sherlock will occur this year.

On Sunday December 15 2013 at 13:00GMT, the British Film Institute will show S3E1: The Empty Hearse in a public screening at the National Film Theatre on London’s Southbank, ahead of the yet to be announced first television airing in the UK on the BBC. The premiere will be followed by a Q&A with members of the cast and crew who will be in attendance.

The BFI listing also carries the first synopsis for the opening episode of the new series [just a teaser, actually, but I'll put it in a spoiler box for the truly faint of heart]:

Two years after the devastating events of ‘The Reichenbach Fall’, John appears to have got on with his life. New horizons and romance beckon. But, with London under threat of a devastating terrorist attack, Sherlock is about to take John at his word, staging his resurrection with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it, though, he’s in for a very big surprise…

Public Tickets are set to go sale on November 12 2013 at 11:30GMT.

BFI members can book from November 6 2013 at 11:30GMT.

The screening is effectively a repeat of the premiere of S2E1: A Scandal in Belgravia, which premiered at the BFI on December 7 2011, almost a month before the first television airing on January 1 2012. Tickets for that event sold out within hours of being released.

Sherlockology's latest Metro blog entry, "The Music of Sherlock," provided this nugget of a progress report:

It’s perhaps fair to say that the post production of any media, be it film, music or television, is dramatically less glamorous compared to the actual filming and performing of what you see onscreen. However, it is without doubt the true nuts and bolts stage of the final product, and often can make or break any production – a sterling performance by an actor can be lost if subject to a bad film or video editor for example.

Sherlock series three has been in the midst of this process for several months now, and just this week one of the most vital parts of post production has been completed – the recording of the score for the S3E3: His Last Vow.

I believe this means that the final cut of the film must ready -- otherwise they wouldn't have been able to score the music.  So all that's left is -- what? -- put everything together?  Might we expect a happy announcement by the end of [next] week?

There's lots more of interest in this blog entry, so do have a look.

Just before Michael Price recorded the score for "His Last Vow," he tweeted, "More strings than ever before. More epicness. More tears."

More strings.  Oh, dear -- we all know what those violins mean ....  :o

Read the RadioTimes take on this here.

Do we? I don't... What?

Specifically I was thinking of the theme that I believe some fans call "The Violins of Death."  Actually, it's used in just about any suspenseful scene, but I always associate it with the part where Sherlock's apparently about to take "that damned pill," just before John shoots the cabbie.

Not the violins' fault, obviously, but that theme tends to mean that it's nail-biting time.

Thank you! I never really noticed the musical themes, just that the music overall appeals to me. I see I have another great excuse for re-watching everything...

There are several themes, of course.  The music used for the opening and closing credits is apparently Sherlock's theme (as in Sherlock the character), and I understand that John also has a theme, played on piano, that I've never really noticed -- so you're not the only one in that case, which is good, it means that we're focused on what's actually happening in the episode.

There is one other theme that I have noticed, though, a much happier piece that I call "Sherlock's on a roll" -- it tends to be used whenever things are going particularly well for him.

Even Gallifrey came back before Sherlock series 3 airs.

They've killed us showing Sherlock Trailer right after Dr Who. If somebody haven't seen it yet

And I really wander why is Anderson in Sherlock's fan club. Any ideas?

Hey, thanks!

... and I wonder

A: is that really what the music for S3 is going to sound like? Please, no!

B: is that what they think we all look like?

John's blog has a new entry. Dated April 20, and he mentioned he'll be typing up old cases, so more coming.

In case anyone missed it, they aired a new Sherlock trailer right after the Doctor Who 50th.

Thanks for the link to John's blog, Martina!

Here are a couple of newly-released official filming photos, thanks to Sherlockology:

Do I see a couple of small scratches on John's face?

If y'all read the new entry, be sure to read the comments as well.  In addition to the self-explanatory ones, there's a new one from Sherlock's fan Jacob Sowersby (who had commented earlier in John's blog), plus one from a C. Melas who I'm guessing is from John's entry about "The Geek Interpreter."  Oh, and Mrs. Hudson must have her own account now -- she's no longer posting as Marie Turner (from next door).

Poor John.  He finally decides to face reality, and now it's about to spin him around in a one-eighty.

And there are also two comments from a certain Mary  :)

Yes, his face in that trailer certainly does not look as if he had been prepared for what was coming. To put it mildly.

I know... I just read the latest update on John's blog, and it made me a bit depressed, to be honest... not used to feeling that way when thinking about the upcoming episode, but I worry (not really, though) that seeing as John is happy now, things will be different between him and Sherlock... I don't like that thought. Nope.

Of course I don't really worry; I know the producers and writers of Sherlock know exactly what they're doing :) and I've read that they'll wrap up the post-return angst in the first episode, so that's good.

If things go as I expect them to, the whole situation will give us a string of grandiose verbal sparring matches and leave us (well, at least me) happier than ever with wiping a real tear or two away among all the tears of laughter.

This should maybe go into the language thread, but what do English / American native speakers mean when they use the German noun "Angst"? It literally translates as fear, but I sense a slightly different meaning here.

I've replied -- as you suggest -- on The Language Thread.

Can't confirm at this time, because it looks like BBC One may have edited their post on twitter, but someone on facebook who saw it first just copied and pasted this:

Of course the BBC would give us the premier of Sherlock immediately after they kill off Eleven. Because they want to see just how many times my heart can break in one night.

Whee -- thanks, Karie!

The news of Sherlock's Series 3 UK premiere during the Christmas season (though not necessarily on Christmas Day) was confirmed just three hours ago by RadioTimes:

The BBC has confirmed that the year’s biggest television mystery will be answered over the Yuletide period with the confirmation of the return of Sherlock in the Radio Times Christmas double issue.

This means the first episode, The Empty Hearse, will air sometime between December 21 and January 3 and bring to an end the desperation of fans longing to know how Sherlock faked his own death.

The BBC has given no indication of the exact date but fans with a fondness for speculation may be expecting a Sunday broadcast day given it's importance in the weekly schedule and the fact that both previous series of the detective drama aired on that day. That would mean it could air on Sunday December 22 or Sunday December 29.

It is understood that New Year's Day – a Wednesday this year – could also be under consideration as a broadcast date.

We're looking at some time within the next 4 weeks then basically? :D the TV schedules for the Christmas period in the UK should start being released once we get into December so we shouldn't have to wait much longer for an official air date. I've been looking forward to the third series so much, not long now #sherlocklives :D

Sounds like "The Empty Hearse" will almost certainly air in the UK sometime in the next 4 to 6 weeks, yes.

I'm rooting for early in that timeframe (because our Region 2 DVD won't be shipped till right after "His Last Vow" airs), and I doubt that you'll disagree!
