Right -- I think that article simply misspoke.  Instead of "The BBC hasn't revealed yet when the 1895 Sherlock episode will be on TV, but series four is expected at Christmas," it should have been the other way around.  At least they corrected the date!

It's a bit like saying, "eat your veggies first, then dessert!"

And depending on the content, will they have to change the signature tunes accordingly or presume that what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander?

It seems perfectly clear from the article that the Christmas Special is likely to be shown on Christmas Day, it does NOT mention anything about the series.

Well it wouldn't, would it?

It hasn't been written, let alone filmed yet!

I've always been the first to attempt to quash these kind of rumours.

But I confess seeing this straight from Steven, does concern me at least a little.

Well, it is a very good smokescreen! Instead of saying "we built up too many expectations and now we have no cogent way of dealing with the fallout" , he simply throws the ball in their court and expects what? Dear God, I wish BC were a bit more like his Sherlock self, and not a realistic, lucid actor who knows that good parts come and go. The supercilious genius would have had a cutting remark ready, since both he and Martin Freeman have indicated their willingness to put up with almost anything the creators throw their way. But the polite, well-brought-up gentleman probably thinks any comment beneath him, so his agent will probably have to answer for him, especially with the imminent fatherhood to keep his mind focused on more important things in life!

Well, of course I have no idea what the real motivation behind those statements was or whether the press is simply blowing up some unimportant remark meant to be humorous, but I think you have to wonder why a man would say these things at a public event. I mean, there must be some kind of intent behind it besides "hey, lets make a headline".

My best guess is it's both a pat on the back ("my scripts are so good these really famous guys are still willing to act in my series even though they don't really need the job") and an indirect appeal to fans to stop whining about the long hiatus ("be grateful they're doing it at all"). Something like that...

Dear Toby,

The whole concept of turning the other cheek is very good and must be upheld on principle, but there are limits! He did mention the franchise, so we come back to the golden-egg-laying goose, and I personally do not trust that gentleman further than I could throw him to say anything he does not want to say with intent (malicious or otherwise), so if I could lay hands on him, I would probably shake him until his back teeth rattled and he would come up with a truthful reason for the hiatus/hibernation!

I have always upheld the view of citing interviews with both Benedict and Martin saying they love the show and want to continue with it...but for the first time I am now concerned something has changed...

I mean they've always been allowed to go and do other work and they have both always said they look forward to a good Sherlock script coming through the door...

I would have thought Martin would want to do the show more now he's working with Amanda...

I would have thought Benedict would want more home based work, with a young child.

Proof that wiglock COULD happen if necessary! Supposedly stylist Claire Pritchard says she keeps an eye on his hair, though.

I may have missed something ... and also, I tend to see the silver lining in just about everything ... but all I heard him say was what he's been saying for some time now ... they have to write good stories to keep BC and MF coming back for more, and they're definitely coming back for S4. Then he attempts to be modest by saying he "hopes" the scripts are good enough. But the way I hear it, he's still confirming they're all going to do S4. Someday.

Same here, I'm afraid. What was it, a Sherlock wig?

That tweet was taken down, but fortunately I have a couple of other pics that I snagged.  However, i will keep looking for the original one as it was a close of a wig.  It was freaky almost.

Does anybody know when exactly the wig has been used previously?

Dear sfmpco,

Just what we all needed, the uncertainty of the male leads ever returning, the Byronic hair look, the Undiscovered Country ( how much more Hamlet can they get?) as the only Sherlock stories that might have been are The List Special and the manuscript which was auctioned off for a hefty sum! Are they going for all three thousand-odd cases that Sherlock Holmes solved in the absence of his Boswell, God forbid?

There are still plenty of short stories that they haven't touched, plus one of the four novels (The Valley of Fear).  And even with the stories that they've nominally used, there are a lot of details still untouched.  So yeah, plenty of fragments left, and some pretty big ones at that.

And there's nothing stopping them from making up some Holmes-type stories on their own.  I suspect they've done some of that already, but can't be sure (since I haven't memorized the canon).

There is no uncertainty.  Ben and Martin are already locked in for S4.  The Byronic hair look is part of who Sherlock is, and it's quite handsome.  Maybe it will start a trend.  After all, there's a longer version of it in the new POLDARK.  They have character arcs to deal with, and I'm sure whatever they come up with will be terrific in the stories.
