Friend of mine had that experience once -- only the cat turned out to be a squirrel.

Good lord. That poor cat. At least, I think it's a cat.....

It not hairless, it’s a sphinx. They’re cute (I pet 1 almost every week at least once if not twice for several minutes).

Helpful to those with a cat hair allergy.

Do you have any personal experience with that?  I'm curious, because I've heard conflicting reports.

But isn't the sphinx a more-or-less hairless breed?

OK, looked it up on Wikipedia:

Quote

The Sphynx cat is a breed of cat known for its lack of coat (fur).  [....]. ... it has fine hairs, or they may be completely hairless. Whiskers may be present, either whole or broken, or may be totally absent.

Is "your" sphinx toward the hairy end of that spectrum?

Yep, both I deal with have hair. Their winter coats are coming in.

And Sphinx are not allergy friendly cats. If you want an allergy friendly cat go for a Sable Burmese. They’re also cute (a different friend has 1 of those).

That Wikipedia article agrees with you.

I have a mild cat allergy.  Some of my cats bother me far more than others, and a friend with severe cat allergies agrees with me on which individuals are the most problematic.  My cats have all been common shorthairs or medium-hairs, and hair length or thickness of coat seems to have very little to do with severity of symptoms.  In general, I'd say that sleek cats cause fewer symptoms than frizzy cats -- though that's based on so few indivual cats that it could be coincidence.

Sometimes it's colour-related, too. My ex had a really fluffy, grey Maine Coon and I never had any trouble with his fur (and it was absolutely everywhere), but some, not all, red cats (and a handful of brown ones I've met) make me react quite strongly. And no, it's not just a placebo effect, as I originally assumed myself - I once had an involuntary blind test, when a friend of ours stopped by and just threw his jacket on the couch because he was in a hurry, and a couple minutes later I started sneezing and my eyes were swelling shut. Turns out, he'd been at his parents before for another quick stop and, when he left, had to chase their red tom off the jacket. Those few hairs was all it took, and yet the cat living in the flat didn't bother my allergy at all.

My walking allergic attack had pure white fur that would not lie down even when she groomed herself, it just stuck out at random angles (something like mine).  Having her in the house didn't particularly bother me, and I could even cuddle with her, but if I touched her, I needed to wash my hands before I touched my face.

My highly allergic friend said that a mutual friend's very sleek all-black cat didn't bother her enough to be worth taking a pill beforehand.

Well, y'all know it's the dander we're allergic too, not the fur. Maybe some kitties just have less dander?

Apparently!  Though the dander concept may be a bit oversimplified (like a lot of other things).  Like I'm not allergic to milk in general, I'm allergic to cow milk.  Maybe some cats' dander is more allergenic than others, or some humans are more allergic to the dander of certain kinds of cats.

I discovered at some point that I am mildly allergic to cats, but not enough to stop me from having one (or a few). Thank goodness. I really really miss having a cat, especially now that cold weather's coming. Need my snuggle buddy in the evenings to keep me warm. Some day.

Lest any of you are worried about that poor lost, constipated dog, let me point out that the poster is clearly a fake, since there's no contact info.  And as for the constipation, we have only VBS's word for that.  :P

I suspected a fake, but isn’t the contact info potentially blacked out at the bottom of the poster, where there’s a long black blotch that appears to be added with a Paint program?

Errrr... how do you tell? The one on the floor has its eyes closed.

The nose patch and the collar looks similar to me.
