Sorry, I need US.  Can't afford the enhanced driver's license nor to update my passport so I can cross the border.  I wouldn't mind otherwise.

You need a passport to get into Canada now???? Egad. I'm actually starting to miss the '60's.

It's to get back into the US.  I can get into Canada no issues, but if I want to get back into the US, I would end up having to do something illegal which is not my M.O. unless I had either an Enhanced Driver's License (most border states have something like this) or a current passport/passcard (there's a special one that works for Canada & Mexico).

Oh, man... I remember in college driving across the bridge in Detroit (we were up there for a wedding) with friends just to say we went to Canada.  lol.

For selfish reasons I wouldn't want it in Canada, although I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get my passport renewed.

What a sad world we live in now.

I have a passcard and a passport.  Of course the passcard is good ONLY for land travel between the USA-Canada or USA-Mexico.  Would like to one day be able to use it!

What's wrong with plain old-fashioned passports? Ours last ten years and can be renewed.

Apparently, there is a Sherlock forum in Vienna in September:

Please, could the German-speaking contingent on this forum go to Lorelei_Lee's latest Ao3 story, Thank you for Smoking, skip it to the end and simply answer her questionnaire, because she is doing research on English vs German fan fiction?

This IS for a case, after all! :sherlock:

Five years? Last time I checked, German passports were 10 years just like any other Schengen passport .

As for the convention, there is indeed one, so thank you for pointing that out! 26th to 27th of September, apparently. English version here, sort of.

Interesting.  That appears to be a generic Sherlock Holmes convention, but they've certainly heard of Sherlock -- in fact, last year's convention featured talks by Claire Pritchard-Jones and Arwel Wyn Jones.

Some general Sherlock Conventions in the U.S. I just found:

Only one I've heard of before is the 221B Con, and only because I follow Baker Street Babes on Tumblr.

Dear Caya, thanks! I had two errors in that post, edited now, and one of them was the title of the Ao3fan fiction where the questionnaire is to be found. We may be having fun, but she is trying to put a paper together, so she needs all the help she can get from all German-speaking members, at least! :hugz:

I used to have trouble recognizing my own family, let alone other people, when I was in an unfamiliar location. .... Also I never notice when people change their hairstyles....

You sound like my mother, except that changes in hairstyle have always seemed to confuse her even worse.  There were two times when she came to pick me up (once at a summer conference and once at college) and I had changed my hairstyle since she had last seen me.  Both times, she walked into my dorm room, looked me in the eye, and asked, "Is Carol here?"  A similar thing happened at my niece's graduation, but admittedly Mom's eyesight was causing problems by then.

I will tend to think someone looks a bit familiar, but have no idea where I know them from or what their name is.  Alex, on the other hand, is amazingly good at recognition, which is sometimes a help to me, but can also be an embarrassment (if he assumes that I also recognize the person we're talking with).

There is a condition (often hereditary) called prosopagnosia, face-blindness. Cracked did an interview with an afflicted person recently, which did a good job of explaining and showing the day-to-day problems, imo.

Interesting (for the fact), didn't know it's a condition.

I recognize faces (although take looong time to remember where/when did I see him/her) but total failure when it comes to names. Got many embarrassing situations when I refer to a name (according to X....) when actually talking to X.

Also, didn't know that it used to be passport-free to cross to Canada from America.

I imagine it must be great (in a way) to go everywhere without all those administrative tediousness.

Used to be passport free until a few years after 9/11 happened.

Is the passport requirement just on the U.S. side?  So you can get into Canada without one, but can't get home (if you're an American)?

That was my understanding. But that was a few years ago.

Thanks for posting that, J.P.!

I love this bit:

Moderator:  ... on Christmas Day, that's a lovely moment when you take your coat off and Lestrade's jaw drops.

Louise: That wasn't scripted, that's Rupert, upstaging everybody.

[Laughter and applause]

Louise: Somebody tweeted me yesterday that Rupert's decided Lestrade has got a bit of shine for Molly , which is hilarious, that makes me laugh. Not in a bad way. I'm very happy.

Would love to see that incorporated!  And this is cute:

Una: ... I think Mrs Watson... oh... Mrs Hudson...

Lara: Is there something you need to tell us Una?

[Audience laughs]

Moderator: Season Four...

[una tries to continue, but...]

Louise: A new ship sails!

[Audience practically explodes with laughter]

Una: I think Mrs Hudson ....

That is at least the second time a cast member has inadvertently referred to Ms. Stubbs' character as "Mrs. Watson" (the first reference having been by Benedict Cumberbatch).  Are John and Martha keeping secrets from us -- and perhaps from Moftiss as well?  ;)

... didn't know that it used to be passport-free to cross to Canada from America.

They didn't exactly just wave you through, but it was much easier than it apparently is now. When you crossed back into your home country (in either direction), they would ask if you had anything to declare, and they would sometimes have a look if you did. Other than that, the usual question for returning US citizens was "Where were you born?" If you did a convincing job of answering, that was generally all, though they would occasionally ask to see an ID.

I don't recall anything but stopping at the border and saying "hi" to the nice guard on the way into Canada, but on the way back into the States the guard asked "Any fruit?" and my father replied, "Just a couple of nuts in the back seat," referring to my brother and I. The guard seemed un-amused, causing my mother to mutter, "Like he hasn't heard THAT joke a hundred times today..."

We actually had more trouble getting into California than into Canada. I don't know if they're still doing it, but they used to stop you at the border to make sure you weren't bringing in anything that might have fruit flies in it. Of course we did, so we had to pull over and and dispose of them on the Nevada side of the border. When we drove off, we saw that the guards were eating the contraband.

I could just stumble around the convention screaming "I know ash!!!"

The whole room would scream back..,"Don't tell me I don't!!!!"

Oh...there are some restrictions to bring fruits or fresh produce to other countries, but didn't know that you can't bring it inter state in the same country?

Oh, definitely -- California's economy is based largely on agriculture, so they seem to be particularly paranoid.

Some years back on a trip to California, we stopped at a pick-it-yourself orange grove and picked a nice bagful of beautiful fruit, then headed on northward, intending to stop for the night just short of the state line.  Unfortunately, we failed to notice the exit we wanted, so we had to make a U-turn in Oregon, then found ourselves facing a California agricultural inspection station.

Fortunately, we were able to convince the guards that these were California oranges that had been out of the state for only about two minutes.  :D

Some people would argue that California IS a different country! :D (Mostly Californians!) (I get to say that because I was born one. ) But yeah, the fruit fly was a real peril for awhile, so they were doing what they could to keep it out. You never hear about it any more, though, I don't know if the problem has resolved itself or what.

We used to travel around the country a lot, I don't recall being stopped at any other border.

Interesting, knowing all these fun facts is fascinating, eventhough I might not have any use with them ever.

To stir back to topic, for those who are able to attend the convention, some useful info that had been gathered so far:

- make sure you have valid passport if the convention is in Canada :)

- If it's in California, don't bring fruits.

There is a loophole to bring half eaten apple though; make sure the bite marks shaped like IOU, speak in soft voice, occasionally scream on top of you lung or use singsong tone. Have a couple of friend with laser pointers on the back seat.

I've been to California exactly once and that was flying through LAX on a red-eye from Honolulu heading to Denver.  I even climbed a chain link fence there (about 2 years before 9/11 happened) because the shuttle never showed to take us to terminal we needed to get to for the flight to Denver.  It was the only time I've ever climbed a fence in my life.  It is definitely it's own place.
