Bless his great, forgiving, ungrudging big heart! BC really lives up to what he professes, most of the time, with candor and humour!

Yup, said I had to sign in -- but didn't say sign in to what.

Just in case any of you other Americans are as absent-minded as I am -- don't set your clocks back tonight till *after* you watch SNL, or you might miss the first hour. ;)

Watched the whole episode which means something as I rarely get past the opening sketch.  Oh yeah, that's right, Benedict was on it and Johnspec & I are at 2 different locations.  Favorite moment(s):

Besides a decent singing voice (song made for his vocal range helps) in the opening monologue were the game show & Benedict's terrorist sketch towards the end. It reminded me of a cross between Sean Harris' villain in M:I Rogue Nation and Jeremy Irons villain in Die Hard with a Vengeance (aka #3). It was the brunette version of Sean's looks with Jeremy's games.  And no I'm not looking up their respective character's names as I'm about to get to bed for the night

Now to warn my son about the potential for some not safe for him memes & gifs based on tonight's episode.

Ugh, I can't believe I stayed up for any of it. Both Kimmel and Fallon came up with vastly funnier skits. Proof once again that what SNL finds funny and what I find funny are worlds apart. The song was okay.

Thanks for the spoiler boxes, guys! I wasn't in a position to watch tonight, and of course there are others in the same boat (especially folks in other countries). I'm hoping that NBC still makes SNL episodes available on their website, so I can watch it sometime next week.

Without going into any detail at all, can y'all just tell me, which of BC's characters did they use in skits? Presumably they had a Doctor Strange sketch, but what about others?

None. :(

I guess that's not too odd. DS is his big thing at the moment. Sherlock may be off limits, as it seemed to be when MF hosted SNL a couple years ago. Khan is yesterday's news, likewise Smaug. And I can't offhand think of any other major pop-culture characters he's played.

In case you missed it: The final proof he's an alien. ;)

HA! It's like he's growing a turtle mouth before our very eyes :D

Holy cow.

Mrs. Hudson is wrong (as she always).

Mycroft is not a reptile, Sherlock is.

Regarding SNL, prior to this I haven't watched a single minute of Snl. I watched half of this, sorry to say I feel annoyed the whole time.

Maybe they both are, they share DNA after all. Maybe that's what happens, she goes into 221B and finds Mycroft with his shell on display.

Aha. So Sherlock manages to cover it all these times and Mycroft just casually displays his shell around? XD

I get it. Sherlock put those thumbs, head and feet around for distractions.

Mrs H might have seen a glimpse of it once or twice but she loves Sherlock so she persuades herself to ignore it.

As she does to all other things Sherlock does as well. :)

No wonder Sherlock half-killed a man for her. What a gentleman. :)

Having now watched some of the skits on YouTube, I'd just like to say that I think he did a very fine job of -- well, of -- well, for those who like that sort of thing, he did a very fine job of it. And I can state that quite confidently, without bothering to see the rest of it.

Tbh I didn't watch it, don't think I could sit through it all, but it strikes me a big part of being an entertainer, particularly a comedian, is doing the fake 'biting back a laugh.' As in 'this is so hilariously funny I am having trouble keeping a straight face, don't you find it hilarious too'? I notice it a lot with stand up comedians, there is always some point where the 'biting back a fake laugh' comes in. I don't know if any of the skits here employ it, but I'm willing to bet they do, and there was an element of it in the Fallon sketch too, which okay, was mildly amusing, but not as hilarious as they were both hamming it up to be. I'm sorry BC, I do love you, but I prefer a straight interview where he's being charming and dorky, where the humour is less scripted.

Please excuse a total stranger to this form of 'humour' , but what the heck is that show supposed to be? Variety, talk show, talent show, stand-up comedy or is it another of those American inventions, like ketchup, which are uniquely appreciated in their native country? An acquired taste, so to speak? It defies all logic, common sense and good taste!

No, not even fake laughs in SNL. That's how unfunny it was. ;)

Yes to all of the above. :d

SNL is basically a sketch program with a continuing troupe of players. In these respects, it's similar to some British shows I've seen, such as Monty Python, Bruiser, and Man Stroke Woman. The differences are a] the guest host of the week and b] it's a live broadcast.

Originally (back in the mid-70's) it was fresh and funny. The cast members and writing staff have changed numerous times over the intervening years, and now it is rarely either fresh or funny. Apparently some weeks are better than others, though -- the episode hosted by Martin Freeman a couple of years ago was certainly less tasteless than last night's, and was actually funny in places.

Talking about a comedy with recurring cast members have any of you guys watched League of Gentleman? I found the first season on Youtube the other day. Now that is weird humour, very dark and twisted, funny whilst being incredibly revolting at the same time. There are only really three actors playing the main characters, including Mark Gatis.

Haven't watched League of Gentlemen yet. As for SNL last night, it is what I would classify as quality junk in that it is usually acted well but the content is otherwise junk.
