Yep! It's also one of Martin Freeman's names, and he's a lapsed Catholic. Just saying! Cumberbatch Sr. Is Timothy, one of the Apostles, for crying out loud, Benedict is named ( whatever he claimed in that funny piece he did) after St. Benedict, the founding father of the whole Benedictine order, ( famous liqueur named after him, too) and now there's Christopher, the Saint who carried Baby Jesus across the rapids in the flight from Herod. Alan Turing was a role among many others. Perhaps Benedict liked the alliteration. Is the universe really so lazy, despite his dabbling in Buddhism in his gap year?

One day he will explain on a talk show how he chose the name, but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the C of E.  He is far too much of a humanist and universalist with some Buddhism mixed in for good measure to give a rat's behind about the C of E.  I do believe, however, that he is a bit of a traditionalist, and perhaps that is what led to a church wedding.  I suspect he intends this to be his one and only marriage, and he wasn't going to do it in someone's backyard in Malibu overlooking the ocean.  He is keeping his private moments extremely private.  No wedding pictures, no baby pictures.  I rather suspect he named his child after the character he played in Parade's End or the boyhood character that young Alan Turing took a fancy to.

C of E?  No.

I should also add that I figured Timothy or Carlton (or possibly both) would figure into the name.  He's so proud of his dad, and he would want to carry on the name legacy.

For all we know, Christopher was chosen by Sophie ... in honor of her favorite uncle, or something. Whatever the origin, it's a lovely name.

The Carlton middle name was a no-brainer: it goes back five generations at least, to the Smyrna consul general. The rest, I hope to have explained in the fullness of time

The father's side is a bit traditionalist for C of E, every male child gets a Catholic Saint as first name. So, they must be High Church followers.

I'm certainly no expert, but aren't Anglican saints largely the same as the Roman Catholic ones?  Presumably any that were canonized before the split in 1534 would be the same, and Christopher goes way back (as does Benedict).  Besides, as has already been said, it's a fine name in any case, regardless of one's religion.

EDIT: just stalked my old forum(as I do)...the nice suggestion there is that 'Christopher' is a nod to Alan Turing....God let this be true!

That thought had occurred to me also, and it would be a lovely touch.  But as Arcadia says, surely the mother gets some say in the matter, not just the father!

Well, dear friends, might it be that the proud parents dread this kind of discussion...

smilie-oma.gif <-- me, being preachy.

His name is Christopher. Sounds nice. Better than Baby Batch. Period.

Assuming that the Daily Mail didn't make that up misinterpret something.  So far, I see no other media sites claiming to have primary knowledge, they're all just quoting DM, with many using qualifiers like "reportedly" and "being reported that."

Yep! Anything taken out of context can be rendered as hilarious or tragic, depending on the desired effect: which is why they should NEVER be taken out of context in the first place!

?? - I got the same video both times - ?? Not that I'm complaining, Cumberbatchisms are one of my favorite things in the whole world (just when I think I might be getting over the guy I go and see something like that, and I adore him all over again.....) :blush2:

Thanks! Although I don't get anything except a blurry pic of BC .... because I'm not on Twitter, perhaps?

That shouldn't matter, Arcadia.  I get a Sensitive Media warning, then when I click on "Show Content," I get nothing, just a big empty white space.  (And I am in Twitter.)

That's what I saw, except when I clicked on Show Content I got BC. Yayyyyy, I'm special! :D

Yeah, but you got him blurry, remember?  This time I got an 11 second teaser for Dr. Strange.  So I'm specialer.  Nyahh!  :P

Specialer but bewildered, that is.  How does a close-up of a bearded BC constitute "Sensitive Media"?

(If they think it's me that's sensitive to the media, they'd get better results with Martin Freeman in a mustache.  No complaints about the promo, mind you.  Just sayin'.)

Does anyone else think Stephen Strange bears an odd resemblance to Khan there at the end? :P

Hello everyone !  I popped into my cave several months back and forgot to come out.  Probably wouldn't have .. ever .. but then I remembered that Mr. Cumberbatch was going to become a father and figured I'd check the internet to see if the joyous event had taken place.  (This was in late July, so you know I've been out of touch.)  I was delighted to find that he and Mrs. C. had a son and looked around some more to see what they had named him.  I've been looking for a while now and just saw the name yesterday.  However they arrived at it, I think it is a wonderful name.  It has a lovely alliterative flow which actually makes CUMBERBATCH easy to say !  :D  I know some very nice Christophers, too .. so I think they chose well.

Thanks, Carol.  I actually watched all 9 Sherlock episodes this summer .. I have a TV in my cave .. and am beginning to get excited about seeing some new stories .. even if it means hurrying on the winter season.  And, believe me, I don't WANT to hurry on the winter season if it's anything like last year.
