I do hope this doesn't prove to be bad news for British television in general and Sherlock in particular.

Frankly, that sounds to me like the usual government hype.  If they can't get a new tax through the legislature, the first thing they cut is road funding or some other highly visible service, inconveniencing as many people as possible.  In this case, if [whoever needs to approve it] doesn't go along with a raise in the BBC fee, they're threatening to cut the most popular programs.  Logically speaking, if they did need to make some cuts, they should start with the programs that aren't much being watched anyhow.

Then we will have to crowd-fund it. I believe the fandom actually would be able to do it.

Aren't we already doing that to some extent?  I assume a good bit of the cost of our Sherlock DVDs and books has gone into the BBC's pockets.

I haven't the least clue how the political levers work in the world of the BBC, so when I read that in the race to succeed Stephenson as drama controller, Faith Penhale who apparently has been managing Sherlock and Doctor Who et al lost out to Polly Hill (Poldark etc.), I imagine dark implications. Maybe I am worrying needlessly, and being too cynical, but all too often I've seen politics undercut talent and render some very good work undone.

No question that the talent is there.  But unless the BBC is different from any other large organization that I've ever encountered, the talent doesn't control the pursestrings.  Plus I suspect it's more a matter of internal politics than of funding per se.  Hopefully whoever ends up on top will pay attention to the ratings (and the money coming in via licensing fees) and decide that Sherlock is worth keeping.

There are a lot of cute pictures of Ben and Sophie at Burberry fashion show.

Strange, I was surprised by my own reaction to this. Don't know why but I passionately hate this kind of events. Paying horrendous prices for a label, the whole circus... or maybe I'm hating them because I never was able to look classy like all those people...

Was watching more of fashion lately because of the dolls though, and noticed that all the models run around as if they just had a handful of the Sugarfree Haribo Bears. And forgot how to use their legs...

Oh, yes, seeing Alison Moyet looking great was a nice addition.

Lots of cute pix of Benedict and Sophie and Christopher today...the latter obviously pap, but I confess it was nice to see them.

Re the fashion ones: no I can't stand these events either and really think intelligent people should be better spending their time.

Intelligent people with a young baby should be at home with said baby!

What's with the documents' bag? Any ideas?

Christopher? *sorry, couldn't resist* Place for new shoes (or maybe two pairs of old loafers in case those brand new shoes they worn should turn out to be killers)?

Someone suggested Dr Strange scripts.

Another anti-fashion-show person here, but it's still nice to see the Cumberbatches actually smiling and apparently relaxed, and posing for the pictures they're in for a change.

BC's character in Tinker Tailor was Peter Guillam. I guess he carried a bag? I don't remember that part, I was too busy trying to follow the plot....

He does carry a bag noticeable towards the end of the movie when he has to check it in.

Amen to that. For two people who probably know when they are being papped most of the time, they rarely smile and put their best foot forward.

Here is a vid on YouTube from the event:

People philosophize about clothes as if it was something mind-blowing-ly important to save the world, makes me want to shake them really hard. But then - we are philosophizing over a damn TV-series.

Well I do see the high level haute couture as a kind of (hardly) wearable art, and art is important... apparently. Still it just don't agree with me.

Ha, I was just dropping by to post that! The description doesn't do it justice by half, here's the video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x37iqy9_benedict-cumberbatch-kristen-bell-and-jeff-bridges-read-mean-tweets-on-jimmy-kimmel_tv

The hair makes me think it wasn't filmed recently....

Dear besleybean, I should have realised the bag came from Tinker, Tailor...but I'm such a fan of the late Alec Guinness that I didn't immediately make the connection with the Gary Oldman version! Bottom line, he used the same in the film version. But Burberry's usually don't make leather goods, although he did wear a trench coat in the film. Thanks!
