And someone apparently thinks that 221B could do with a redecoration:post-1793-0-82176000-1438020579_thumb.jpg

Meaning exactly what? What kind of reputation would a moderator have, then?

Just being silly...

Do you have international reputation?

Finally a nice and respectful article on BC Fans

Today morning I have read the term rabid fans and it made me want to design a T-shirt with a warning: Caution: Rabid Fan - eats dumb journalists for breakfast. Or something like that.

Even more when I read something like THAT plus the comments.

I think the term Cumberbitch finally backfired at the fandom.

OMG, J.P., I'm still over here dying at the description of what the media thinks will happen.  Just a girl, at her desk, trying not to laugh, and failing miserably.

Thanks for finding that article, my blood pressure has now returned to normal.

Also, I love "Cumberhorde". :D

*Grumpf*. You know, the fact that it is this particular actor playing Hamlet has made the people I know in real life be a lot less sympathetic over me not being able to get a ticket to the live broadcast at the cinema. They're all "how awful" - until they learn that Benedict Cumberbatch is in it, and then they laugh and go "ooooo....!" and shake their heads, automatically writing my frustration off as fan-girl madness.

And I'm not even a real Cumberbatch fan! I am a Sherlock fan and I think he's a good actor whose work I have so far always been happy to see, but I don't spend much time thinking or caring about him as a person.

Grrrr...

Finally?

Arcadia, I tend to forget that the fandom exists much longer than I belong to it.

Hmmm... RABID CUMBERBITCH would make an even better tee though.

Here's the way I look at it at hope much of the fandom looks at it:  he is a great actor of his time, and if you can get a chance to see a great actor perform live on stage, you should go for it. Although Los Angeles is not exactly the hallmark of the theater scene in the USA, we do have a lot of stars that live here and some of them do theater on occasion, plus we get touring shows with big stars.  So, go see them if you can.  One actor was here in 1989/1990 touring as King Arthur in CAMELOT, and to this day I regret not seeing him.  Sadly, he has passed away.

Are people now offended by being called Cumberbitches?  It was my understanding that the fans themselves made up that name, some years back.  But of course, the fans who made it up can't really speak for all fans.  (And God knows I wouldn't care to be called that, even if I were a really ardent Cumberbatch fan.  Maybe I should be glad there isn't a word for Freeman fans!)

They (the fans or at least some fans) came up with the name Cumberbitches.  BC actually doesn't like that name for fans and won't use it.  I like BC as an actor, and I think he's very talented, but I will not be referring to myself as a Cumberbitch or a Cumberanything... I find that weird.  I'll admit to being an X-Phile or a Sherlockian (can you be that if you only watch Sherlock?), but I'm not about to be labeling myself for every actor/actress I like.

I think the "Cumberbitch" name is funny as far as it goes, but I find the whole idea of having even a small part of your identity attached to your liking of a certain person's work to be a little...creepy? sad? self-limiting?  I mean, I think a heck of a lot of Stephen Hawking's work too, and I'd never call myself a Hawkingbitch or whatever.

I don't have a clear idea how bad that word feels for a native speaker, but I was always thinking about it as highly self ironic and actually smart.

The problem is that the media tend to see only that name and spread a kind of negative vibe based alone on a skin deep implication of how it sounds.

IMO this kind of publicity also do harm to the production itself, the actors and CB himself.

Actually it shouldn't affect me, but it makes me angry. At the idiots that write such crap.

I think BC wants it to be known as the CumberCollective, although it definitely has Communist undertones. Somewhere in here I listed my top ten favourite actors, when I raised the question of Johnny Depp's hairline in Black Mass, and Benedict isn't even included, but in the Cumberquiz on BBC Radio 4 I scored full marks. Bit weird that! O_O

I was thinking about a Borg-like collective. Is that is a better option?

I didn't mind to call myself a Viggoholic or Viggocentric at times. *shrug*

It's mostly about finding names that are witty and funny. Kind of scrabble if you want. ;)

Do any other celebrities have this phenomenon?  This whole naming the "fandom" after a celebrity?

I think that is a perfect description of the originator's intentions. It's a cute pun, actually. (Not that I would care to be called anything like that -- but I'm just not a trendy person, am I?)

It happens to actors & musicians to have fandoms named after them. My favorite musician is Jeremy Camp. Fans are called CAMPers and the ultra die hards are called Team CAMPers with his blessing as I understand it as I joined that fandom about 7 years in.

I wouldn't say I'm offended, exactly, because I get the joke. But at the same time I agree with BC that women shouldn't refer to themselves as bitches, for historic reasons -- not even as a joke.

Earlier in the day, the Barbican theatre had been besieged by Cumberbitches, the ultra-fans who have a slavish devotion to the British actor. Tickets for the highly-anticipated production sold out when they went on sale in August last year, but excited fans queued up overnight for some of the coveted £10 tickets that are being released every day of the two-month run.

Some had travelled from as far away as Los Angeles, sleeping overnight on the pavement outside the theatre, in the hope that they might snare a seat.

Worries that the Cumberbitches might ruin theatre etiquette by screaming every time their hero appeared onstage were largely unfounded. Yes, there were the occasional excitable giggles during the comical interludes and a shrill tittering ran through the stalls when he uttered the immortal ‘alas poor Yorick’ line, but the audience were focused and enrapt throughout. Indeed, there was only one outbreak of crazed applause mid-scene, which – by Cumberbitch standards – was something of a miracle.

WTF!?!

swear2.gif

Why don't they wonder about football fans? People camping to snatch the new iphone that will last for one year? Men travelling to China to photograph trains? People travelling around the globe to see Grand Canyon, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben - or to fry their butts on some overcrowded beach, or drink themselves comatose on Mallorca.

Mean, sexistic idiots. Furious.gif

Now there's the T-shirt! :applause:

Really?
