Was watching Sky News. It needed almost 2 hours to hear about BC. He looked quite p.off by the question - something like: is the stage a right place to... blah blah. He did answered the question politely but then walked away.

What surprised me - they mentioned only him. Where are the other recipients? Shouldn't it be a bigger news?

That's a good question.  They did announce quite a list back in June, but I don't see any date(s) for the actual award(s) there.  Maybe they have a number of ceremonies for smaller groups of recipients, or in the case of a high-profile recipient, for just that individual.

I remember reading somewhere that as a student Benedict took a gap year to go to Tibet and teach English to children there. Uncommonly nice, I thought.

Technically it was India near the east side of Nepal. He taught Tibet Buddhists at a monastery.

No! Keep it coming, dear J.P. ! It's always fantastic to hear that voice! Not to mention see the poppy in its right place, something glaringly obvious for this time of year, but not for TEH!

As for what he said, you can find it almost verbatim in the BT extract you yourself uploaded. And he almost gave me a nasty turn, because he said that after Dr Strange he would be taking a break! directly after that ( Dr Strange) on to Season 4 of Sherlock ( fingers firmly crossed) and HM asked him if it ever stops! When the long-suffering fans get to see it, of course, remains a moot point! More than ever, :evilmoff: !

Can someone explain to me what this poppy business is about?

Rememberance Day, 11 November at 11 o'clock GMT is celebrated the Allied victory over the German/Austrohungarian front in 1918, in London at the Memorial, near Edith Cavell's statue. Happened to be the birthday of my uncle, and the poppies are for the dead in the fields of Belgium, Flanders, Alsace-Lorraine, where the fragile little flowers covered the crosses of the dead of both sides! Really a huge waste of energy, manpower and resources! I have always wondered how Sherlock Holmes never went after Basil Zacharov, the arms merchant, orders of magnitude worse than Moriarty and Milverton!

Awww ... this.

Oh Benny C, Bennyt C, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways....

JP, I hoped to have a go at transcribing the other one for you (I need an excuse to listen to these all night, you see :p ) but I have to run off to work soon, maybe when I get home if no one else does by then.

And as Sherlock would say...."There's the knighthood in the bag."

Dear sfmpco, not quite there, yet! It would have been much more imposing, what with velvet pillow, kneeling and being dubbed a knight! I wonder if HM uses a plastic or light alloy sword in those ceremonies, pushing ninety and having to wield such a heavy thing on the right shoulder of each recipient must be tiring for the lovely old lady!c

And I need technical backup, because the lovely Dutch cupcake artist has created a truly magnificent one, which the uploader says is too big a file! Help!!!

Don't know at all why he meet with the Queen, but will check the thread later myself if i have time to relax and still curious by then.

I always pity people who have political occupations like the Queen (I know maybe I shouldn't), you have to dress nicely, talk politely, meet and greet strangers everyday and under the spotlight for everything you do. Ugh.. not even meeting Benedict Cumberbatch makes it sounds appealing.

Someone did. I think this set of gifs summarize it quite well.

It just occurred to me that CBE stands for "Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" -- which is a bit odd, since for all practical purposes there hasn't been any British Empire since sometime (depending on how you reckon it) between 1980 and 1997.  But I assume the title is basically honorary anyhow, so that makes little practical difference.

Dear Carol, being a Colonial Revolutionary descendant, you cannot fathom how the REALLY important orders are those of Knight of the Garter, initiated by the Plantagenets, and reserved to 24 members, one of whom is the reigning monarch, leaving 23 recipients, usually of Royal or princely pedigree, ( HM portrait above Mycroft in TEH, my favourite of all!), the Knight of the Bath, all red cape, white silk stockings and feathered hats. The Order of the British Empire was a lollipop dreamed up in the 19th century to honour civic service ( BC got his for services to charities and the arts) to cover every eventuality. It's just a showy trinket, like the Order of St Michael and St George, and later the Order of Lenin were distributed to any and all deserving officials in Russia and the USSR. Makes for impressive foto opportunities, but is as hollow as the Hollow Crown of Richard III.

My main grouse is that his morning coat in the real life ceremony fitted him less well than the identical-purpose garment in SoT!!!

Actually, I think I had fathomed that fairly well for a mere Colonial descendent!  ;)

Now that the perpetrators of the Paris massacre seem to be Syrians, should the honourable CBE recipient not express his commiseration to the families of the victims, and perhaps, just perhaps, acknowledge that the f****** politicians were just doing their jobs of first keeping their own citizens safe? First Paris, next what? London again, Berlin? ...no one is safe from fanatics!
