An outfit for summer

WDLRWQ.jpg

and for winter

Suddenly, I'm liking the idea of Mycroft as the kind of guy who wears a nightshirt to bed.  Very few guys can pull that off, but I'm thinking Mycroft could.

Somehow, I always think the Sherlock we see in PJ pants and a tshirt and dressing gown is the "real" Sherlock.  The suit and the perfectly-tailored shirts are his battle armor to face the world, not his comfort-wear.  I think the Mycroft we see in suits is the real Mycroft, and that he secretly can't wait to get up in the morning and put on "real" clothes.

You know your obsession is bad when you actually give some thought to how the guys feel about their PJs.

You know you're obsessed when you have something you need to do, don't want to do it, and go and hide in the Sherlock forum instead and giggle at the you-know-your-obsessed-when posts.

That pic and its kind always make me flinch in sympathy. The flatness of its chest seems constant with the swimmer puppy syndrome

that sounds like my day only without the giggling at the obsession posts.

That sounds like me.  I'm almost 37, look 26 and act closer to that age.  There might be times where I act closer to my shoe size (US 9.5).

I'm finally looking at my business stuff for the day (it's 9:35pm where I'm at).

I think I might be a touch obsessed - last week I realized that, since my gym has free wifi, I can watch Sherlock on my phone while running on the treadmill. This realization pretty much felt like a Christmas present.

And it gets worse when one realises that several members have never even bothered to read ACD, and one wants to

a) knock their heads together,

b ) leave the forum and never look back,

c) fervently wish the scriptwriters had never infantilised one's favourite detective

d) be able to remain a child forever, like Wendy never, ever,  grow up.

Do you mean members of the creative team who make the show or members of the audience?

I must say neither bothers me. There seem to be plenty of people behind Sherlock who have read the Doyle stories an awful lot, and there are plenty of clever references to the original to please me. A lot of my enjoyment of the series does come from seeing it as a wickedly clever, funny and very creative running commentary on those old yarns, but I'm not bothered by the information that the producer herself has never read them - it seems she can do a pretty good job in spite of that, doesn't it. As for the actors, directors, score writers, costume, set and makeup artists etc., sure, it might be beneficial for their work if they are familiar with the original, but in the end all they really have to be familiar with is this particular version they are trying to create.

And viewers? Heck, entertainment is for fun, period. I get more out of Sherlock because I read the books it is based on, but it seems plenty of people enjoy the show just as much as I do without ever having so much as glanced at one Sherlock Holmes story, or who only took to Sir Arthur's work after having seen the adaptation, and that's great - it goes to show what a good series it is, doesn't it?

It's all fine. :)

Dear Toby,

Members of the forum, obviously. And although Ms Vertue had not read any stories in 2008, you can safely surmise  she has read them all by now, possibly even to her son Louis, who is just the right age, who drew the Hound and so desperately wanted to play in HLV that he wore contact lenses that he couldn't see through.

Just curious: Why does that bother you?

From the general impression I had before joining, this is the official BBC forum on the topic of one of the most famous detectives in fiction.

I realised, from reading through the Favourite FanFiction thread, that there are members who have not read the source material, so to speak. How can one discuss the niceties of the series without a frame of reference? It is as if I were to go onto uboat.net and discuss the subject based solely on Haie und Kleine Fische and Das Boot! In fairness, there is a thread on films, there, as well.

Although we may joke and banter more here, it is still NOT a fan girl thing, but a serious site.

Still, as you point out, people who watched the show first went out and bought or downloaded the original stories, and that is all to the good!

But in all seriousness, I first came to this page because I viewed it as a place to discuss the current BBC Sherlock series.  Now, I dunno what the original intent was this for this site, but I just avoid the sections that don't apply to me (other versions or ACD areas) because I can't contribute to them and I wouldn't have the foggiest what people are talking about anyhow.  I do still intend to read the original stories at some point, but I don't feel like not having read ACD has hampered my ability to understand and follow the current BBC series at all.  Now maybe it has, and I don't realize what I don't know in relation to the current series?  I dunno.  But it hasn't kept me from enjoying the new series.  :)

Uh, no, this is definitely not any kind of official BBC forum.  We do respect the rights of the BBC and of Hartswood Films, but we are totally unaffiliated with either.  The primary focus of this forum is meant to be the BBC television program Sherlock, but because many fans of the program are also fans of the original stories and/or of other adaptations, we have areas devoted to those topics as well.

As for being a good place for serious discussions, yes, that is definitely our intention.  But we can be silly too!

That's the whole idea, Sitty -- everyone is free to participate in whatever areas interest them.  There are no requirements, and there will not be a quiz -- er, well, actually there may be a quiz, but if so, it'll be strictly optional and hopefully fun.

Dear Carol, it does say on the Internet that BBC Sherlock Forum is the premier UK based site for discussion of the BBC series, so one surmises  that it is more or less what it purports to be.

Dear sittything, when The Musgrave Ritual alone contains the shooting of the wall because he is bored, depicted in The Great Game, and when pestered by Dr Watson he produces a list of past cases including Ricoletti, mentioned in The Fall, and the Aluminium Crutch, mentioned in Scandal and the Hounds, all on one single page, then you can understand why having read the stuff in the first place makes you laugh and hug yourself, because you are able to get the insider jokes, as well.
