I guess we Americans should be grateful that PBS kicks in money.

I'm sorry JP and other European folks.  That's a real bummer.   :(

It's a real Friday the 13th. gaah.gif

It seems that the cinema screenings are dependent on the TV broadcast - and as it seems - we will have to wait also for that.

From: http://sherlock-de.com/2015/11/13/special-nicht-in-d-a-ch-kinos/

Are they giving a date yet for the TV broadcast?  I scanned the article and didn't see anything other than what appeared to be the US, Canada, Australia broadcast date?

The BBC's idea of "worldwide" seems to be just a tad bit shy of anybody else's definition!  :(  If the theater screenings are in a package deal with the television airings, though -- why aren't they screening it in all the countries that air the show?

It seems China is going to be airing it in theaters per this article:  http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/oct/21/sherlock-christmas-special-to-be-shown-in-cinemas-across-china

Yeah, but otherwise "worldwide" seems to be the UK and (some) former British colonies.  lol

Maybe they meant "worldwide" as in "the sun never sets on former British colonies"?

Where's Colbert with the Union Jack when you need him.

The last time I checked China wasn't a part of the Commonwealth. But maybe I'm not up to date anymore.

???  They never were that I'm aware of.

But they get to see Sherlock. Like the other former colonies...

Lots of people in China?  It's pretty popular there isn't it?

Just Hong Kong was -- but maybe that's enough to qualify the whole country.

Right! Since France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria and Switzerland and Denmark are not included, how about starting a boycott on all and every Sherlockology and Sherlock-related items Europe-wide? Loss of revenue might bring them to their senses! Anyway, the concept was invented in Ireland in the 19th century, so we will be instituting a very British form of complaint!

It's hardly fair to blame Sherlockology -- they, like this forum, are merely a group of fans who report the news.  In other words, don't shoot the messenger!

Anyway, the concept was invented in Ireland in the 19th century, so we will be instituting a very British form of complaint!

Even though Captain Boycott was in fact English by birth, the original "boycott" was against him by Irish land tenants in County Mayo -- whose residents were admittedly under British rule in 1880, but would most certainly object to being called "British" nowadays.  Unfortunately, there seems to be no graceful adjective for referring to the British Isles as a whole.  The best I've been able to come up with would be "...a very British-Isles form...."

Dear Carol, since the creators deemed Continental Europe unworthy of their attention, including all those Russian fan girls of BC's, if NOTHING connected with their franchise, from DVDs and conman versions of Conan Doyle stories ( yes, I was suckered into buying the blighted stuff!) is bought Europe-wide, then they would receive the message in loss of revenue!

I did a whole paper on the 1848 Irish potato famine and the boycotting in the 1880s, thanks for informing the rest of the forum members of the exact circumstances!

I suppose if movie theater screening are linked to release on public television, then all Germany could possibly get would be the dubbed version, which they would have to pay me to watch (and the price would be pretty high).

No biggie. I'll get the DVD from the UK as soon as it's sold online and watch it at home on my new big screen. That will be fine.

Dear TOBY, I pre-ordered the DVD along with Mr Holmes as soon as the option became available. It's the flipping discrimination which raises my hackles!

Posted

It may possibly be not discrimination by Hartswood and/or the BBC, but rather by European theater owners.  In some countries, they may be having trouble finding theaters that are willing to show TAB.  I wish I knew!

It does suck, and I'm sorry for those of you in countries where it's not going to be in theaters.  Are you guys still awaiting air dates too?

I think so... I don't really pay much attention to that because I am not interested in seeing the dubbed version they will show on German public television. All I care about is how soon can I get the DVD.

Well, if the cinema screening and TV airing are connected, then we'll have to wait for the dubbed version both for TV and cinemas. A subtitled film is somehow possible but subtitled TV versions are rare exceptions.

Are foreign movies in Germany generally shown dubbed?  If so, then even if the theater and television showings are not related, the theaters could be insisting on waiting for a dubbed version.  And if that's generally true in other countries as well, that could account for what we've seen announced so far: only English-speaking countries.

Alternatively, if the theater owners are thinking of Sherlock as a television program (which is understandable!), they may want it dubbed -- even if they do show undubbed movies -- because dubbing is considered normal for television, so they assume that's what their audience would expect.

It just doesn't seem plausible to me that Hartswood and/or the BBC would be deliberately avoiding the entire European market.

Posted

Maybe they are not avoiding the market and there only will be a delay, but it would be nice if they would say a word to us.

Yes, subtitled movies are exceptions, both in TV and in cinemas in Germany. Took me years to make a piece with that. In Poland movies are subtitled and dubbing is exceptional (like movies for kids), in TV there is still the so called lector - a voice-over translation. I still think it is a good compromise, but I think one has to grow up with this. :)

Unfortunately, yes. On the other hand, not that unfortunately, because going to the cinema is so expensive and if they showed the movies with original audio all the time everywhere except just every once in a while in a few special theaters, then I would probably go broke. It's actually cheaper to buy a film on DVD than to go see it at the cinema and I like to see things multiple times anyway, so what I do is I check films out online if they are available, or just look at clips and trailers on youtube and if I like what I see then I go out and buy the disks. I used to rent a lot, but where I live now there is no decent video rental.

I don't even have my TV hooked up to the network. German television mostly sucks in my opinion.

*Sigh*... I am not feeling well. I was a good girl yesterday and cleaned house, but today I just lay in bed sneezing, coughing, shivering or sweating and trying to ignore the pain in my joints and my head. At least that gave me a chance to catch up on the news and I am still totally shocked over what happened in Paris. I remember 9/11, but that was far away, so to speak, even though I have family in the area. But this? This happened in the country right next to me. I can't quite process it yet...

Sorry. Wrong place and time to go on about the news. Where were we? The Special. Oh yes. Anyway, it's sad that they won't show it here, but not that big a deal for me. Isn't the DVD supposed to come out mid-January already?

Could be a coincidence.  But sounds an awful lot like a bad dust / mold / pollen allergy.  You might try dusting with a damp rag rather than a dry cloth.  I find that helps a lot (though my reactions were never half as bad as what you're describing).  Also, they make special vacuum cleaner bags that are supposed to filter out allergens -- but I find my best bet is to let Alex do the vacuuming.

Yes -- January 11th in the UK and January 12th in the US.
