Thinking about how the Special could possibly have anything to do with Moriarty...

It's pretty obvious from the pictures we saw in advance and from the trailer that

the "bride", whoever she is, shoots herself in the head in a very similar way to how Moriarty did it in The Reichenbach Fall. Now, if this is indeed the case and it turns out she survived it, then that might be a hint to us that Moriarty is indeed alive.

Also, if Sherlock, John and Co were doing research on whether Moriarty could possibly still be among the living, they might come across this case from the 1800s and decide to investigate it further, thus mentally going back in time. Which could result in a Victorian episode without actually messing up the timeline of the series.

As for the theme of ghosts... well, that actually already started with the end of His Last Vow, didn't it? Moriarty suddenly showing up on all screens is very much like a modern ghost story. So yeah, I see how the Special and the series could connected thematically, even if we find they tell different stories in different times.

If anyone's wondering what happened to the discussion of communication styles and forum etiquette, T.o.b.y has split it off into its own thread, here.

I like this, for some reason I'm seeing it as Sherlock and John's journey into the Mind Palace? It's almost a folie a'deux type of idea. I presume it's from Sherlock's point of view, which to me would make sense as I think he sees himself as even more aloof than he actually is.

I would love if there was a halfway logical way for them to incorporate Moriarty. I could buy this whole Victorian jaunt as Sherlock's ruminations on who or what is behind Moriarty's return. I wonder if the Diogenes Club is a sign will we also revisit the possible Moriarty/ Mycroft conspiracy: could it be possible they worked together to fake Moriarty's death in order to take down a network they had deliberately built around a false image of Moriarty? I would love is Moriarty just turned up as a random club member, no explanation provided.

If this hasn't been mentioned already, TAB is rated PG-13 and is 1:50 long.

I give up! Has anyone else been able to book a ticket through the Fathom Events site? All I get is Fandango telling me the movie's not currently showing. Grrrrr... I know that you doofs, that's why I'm trying to buy advance tickets.....

Anyway, it's supposed to be showing in my local theater in IMAX. Not sure I give a hoot about IMAX, actually, maybe I'll just stick to seeing it on TV. Or driving 45 minutes to a more cooperative theater .... grrrrr.....

I went to Fathom to find the theater which brought me to Fandango for the tickets.  I then bypassed Fandango and went directly to the theater's site and got tickets that way.

Yeah, that's how I finally got the Hamlet tickets. But it doesn't seem to be working for my local theater. Hmph. Try again later, maybe.

A new trailer

it's getting more and more curious...

Indeed...

So this shows us that there will be a Victorian retelling of how the boys met. With Mike Stamford, of course.

Definitely an alternate universe then, not just merely mind palace time travel. Could still be some modern character's speculation on "how would things have gone if we had lived during the time of that case", though.

 I somehow think it's so cute that they apparently like the magic of the beginning so well that they found an excuse to do it again. I wonder how they will fit Mary in at that stage - will John be already married in the Victorian version when he's introduced to Sherlock - Holmes?

Each time I see a new bit of the Special, it seems to be something different than I thought seeing the bit before.

Geez, those folks at BBC know how to build up the suspense. :D

They sure know how to make trailers. I was very skeptical about this strange Victorian business until I saw the clips, but now I'm really excited and optimistic. Not sure if it'll make much sense... But I have high hopes that it will be a lot of fun and look beautiful.

I'm getting the impression that the special spans quite some time. Interesting.

Do we have to spoiler what's in the trailer?

And I'm seeing it the 6th with a friend.

Good question! Do we? I thought I'd be careful, just in case anybody was planning to go into this totally unprepared, but come to think of it, what would they be doing in this thread?

It looks to me from this third trailer that part of the story is Sherlock and Watson meeting for the first time.  And of course we have Mike Stamford again!

Well, there's no riding crop in the mortuary but a proper whip.  LOL

So where is Molly?  Is she in the mortuary?  Another role?  Of course I just rewatched the trailer to make sure she wasn't lurking in the background.

ETA:  Maybe she went to get him some tea?  Was coffee a thing in Victorian England?

Also extremely curious as to Molly's role- the more people the trailers show other than her, the more I want to know.

I just checked and women did work as doctors (or whatever she is) going back that far. If she is a doctor in this, Louise Brealey would have played a doctor in two BBC Victorian era dramas (the other being Ripper Street), within a couple of years of each other.

I wonder, if bets are off for the special being 'imagined' and it is alternate universe- would they consider her for the villain's role? Seeing as Mary has sort of had her turn, and the writers have a fondness for femmes fatale. It would definitely explain her not being in the trailers. Also, and I'm sorry I'm not sure where he said this, but I have recollection of Moffat saying about Molly something like 'Wait 'til you see what she does in the next one.'

I suspect they will have given Molly a reasonable vocation in the medical field based on the time period.  Although there were women doctors, they were not commonplace.  She has also never specifically been called a doctor on the show, although she would certainly have a medical degree.  She is certainly always written as a doctor in fan fiction.

aaaaaand... have you noticed that in the first scene Dr Watson has no 'stache?

Well, I told you there was a pic of him without it... :P

Yup, you did!  (And no, I had not noticed.)  They also have a nice Sherlock-and-John-type toss-and-catch between Holmes and Watson.

Just offhand, I'd say anything that's in a trailer or other advertisement is news, not spoilers.  But I'm perfectly willing to hear opposing views.

Here's the list of US theaters.

Apparently none of the theaters in the nearest big-enough town are showing it, but there are several others within an hour's drive, so not too bad.

But how do you get the @#$%^&* website to let you buy the @#$%^&* ticket? It shows my local theater, then tells me it's not currently showing. I know that, dang it, that's why I'm trying to buy advance tickets!!! :blowmytop:
