“We are very good at making people wait – it's what we do,” quips Gatiss. “Whole civilisations have risen and fallen between seasons of Sherlock.” As they have established Sherlock Holmes and John Watson so brilliantly in the 21st century, I wondered why Gatiss and Steven Moffat wanted to now place them in a Victorian setting?

“It's called the Adventure of Having Your Cake and Eating It,” says Gatiss. “No, to be honest, it was just too irresistible to see Benedict and Martin [Freeman] and everyone else in Conan Doyle-land.

What appears to be an interview with Cumberbatch and Freeman, altho I suspect they weren't in the same room at the time .... what's interesting to me is that this article says Moriarty will NOT be making an appearance in the Special. Do they know something we don't, or are they just speculating?

I'm also puzzled by this remark: "Sherlock is currently looking a lot suaver and smarter than the rather scruffy, overgrown undergraduate to whom we have become accustomed."

"Our" Sherlock is scruffy?? And looks like an undergraduate? Are these people watching the same show I am?

Here's the same interview with BC and MF, only more complete and without the silly editorializing. BC here (he really hates the curly hair!  ) and Martin here.

They say they're going to run the Gatiss and Moffat interviews tomorrow.

Yes, someone called Cumberbuddy twitted that for all the latest news, Sherlock fans should follow the official thread of a convention Down Under. And he does look like a proper Sherlock Holmes in the Victorian spoof, no riotous curls needing tons of hair product, manic behaviour and (non-existent) "sociopathic" tendencies.

About the only point I agree with Mr Freeman is that the Granada series had "nailed" the two iconic characters. He f•°©%•° believes that the creators who couldn't be bothered to write proper introductions to their own selection of Sherlock Holmes stories believe in them like Holy Writ! How much denser can a Dr Watson actor be, if he's not actually Nigel Bruce?

I am focusing more on how Mark Gatiss loves cake too, like Mycroft.

It's a flood! Will have to catch up... or not. It's only like 6 weeks until it comes on DVD... maybe it's better to stay spoiler free?

A question: if it is aired in UK TV, will it be available on BBC website to watch after the airing for few days, like the episodes of the running series right now?

You don't have to wait for the DVD to see it, do you?  That would be terrible.  I do know it's supposed to have an encore airing on Jan. 10.

Moffat told the Radio Times: “It’s a new story, but if you know the original stories, you’ll see that it’s fashioned out of quite a few others.

 As we expected!

Presumably -- but only if you (and more to the point, your computer) are in the UK.

That's only in the US.

A good bit of plot there!

Well, the BBC iPlayer for TV programmes, is available in the UK only, probably due to the whole license issue, so it's no use downloading it outside the country, contrary to the BBC Radio one, which is available practically all around the world. Continental Europe is definitely DVD-bound.

Why is Thomas Ricoletti a little surprised to see his wife dressed in her old wedding gown? Because, just a few hours before, she took her own life...

Mrs Ricoletti's ghost now appears to be prowling the streets with an unslakeable thirst for revenge. From fog-shrouded Limehouse to the bowels of a ruined church, Holmes, Watson and their friends must use all their cunning to combat an enemy seemingly from beyond the grave and the final, shocking truth about... the Abominable Bride!

So... seems as if my hunch was correct that they'll use a parallel case to illustrate how Moriarty can show up on all the nation's TV screens in spite of having blown his brains out one season earlier.

And the intrepid duo will finally be revealed as true Sherlock Holmes fans or as crafty entertainment-industry opportunists: ostensibly, they went all period Holmes to get some plot lines across that couldn't be worked into their 21st century incarnation.

One of the clues, according to Mr Moffat, is in Chinese. And here the fun starts: will they have used proper Mandarin or Cantonese, which were the prevalent dialects at that time, since Holmes is roughly contemporary with the Boxer uprising, or will they have used the artificial construct of the late Mao Che Tung, known as putong hua, created to bring a unified language to the country, and very much a 20th century construct? After the problem with their ostensibly favourite ACD stories' collection, I shall be watching very carefully, since use of putong hua will mean they're doing it all for the money, not any ostensible fanboy reason!

Huh?

Are we really holding Mofftiss to a must get the historical Chinese dialect correct standard or they're not true ACD fanboys?

I was thrilled! I went, at last, I can have a beeeep haircut [laughter] I can slick it back and not have that ridiculous mop of curls on my head. And then I went you’re mad, what?

This makes me worry for S4. What if he insists on changing the haircut? Sherlock without his mop?

Should we start a petition to prevent this happening?
