Or maybe they're giving you a discount for making you sit through half an hour of commercials before the real commercials start. :P

They are Cumberbatch fans, though, in the sense of "oh yeah, the guy that's in that show I like, I'd watch him other stuff." (Sorry, Carol, Martin doesn't seem to make the same impact with my crowd. :( )

That's only to be expected, actually.  The Freeman Effect (like the man's acting) is subtle, and tends to sneak up on one over time.  I wouldn't expect it to affect the casual viewer.

'Tis a matter of collation - I'm on a (Win7) desktop and can see it just fine (it's just a smiling face, btw), I presume because mine is set to German. Regardless, I concur with Carol - on such a multi-platform, multi-national forum, it's always better to err on the side of compatibility and use the forum's own emoticons. Tim's a real sweetheart regarding adding new ones if you need a particular emotion expressed, too.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the term "collation" in this sense, and Google offers no obvious clues. Could you elaborate?

Have a couple links: here, here, here - because I'm not sure I can explain this well (or even fully understand it, to be honest). Basically, your computer gets a code for each Unicode character (letter, symbol etc.) - which it then either displays correctly (if the server and your computer are speaking the same Unicode, basically), incorrectly (often the case with umlauts and such, which come out as a garbled string - can you see this: ß ?) or as a little Unicode box with the code number in it (this is basically your computer throwing the towel and saying, Beats me). Inge's computer apparently uses the same mapping as mine, and yours doesn't - this doesn't make a difference with basic letters (they're standard), but it does with exotics like that smiley. Clearer now? Sorry for the confusion.

OK, so you meant basically "how does your computer interpret international ASCII?"  (I knew that different languages and countries can use the same code for different things, I just never heard the term "collation" applied.)  So you're saying that Inge's computer system is configured to include smileys right in its character set.  Interesting.

Your "can you see this" character looks kinda like a beta to me.

@Carol: that's good, for that is how it's supposed to look like (it's actually a so-called sharp S, one of the lesser known German extra letters, but close enough). And yeah, that is what I think is the root of this problem. Inge's smiley is a Unicode character, which your computer might or might not know how to interpret correctly (though it's odd that J.P.'s doesn't want any of it either), while the forum smileys are little .png graphics and should show up correctly for everyone.

First things first! That emoticon is what came up on BBC One Twitter thingie! Second, dear SherlockedCamper unwittingly gifted me with :evilmoff: . Thirdly, that should read "no one", just in case! :hugz:

Wow! That's what would be called in our parents' day "by return of post"! Are you sure you weren't Wil E Coyote or that Mexican mouse which yelled "Arriba, arriba, arriba!" In a previous incarnation, dear Carol?

Dear J.P. , that could be arranged!

BTW, the problem with the ASCII/emotie-thingie - my laptop still runs with a quite old system software, maybe that's why I cannot see the new fancy stuff.

Dear J.P. , as I see it, the whole forum should sport a sign that hard hats must be worn at all times!

What worries me most at the moment is that except Odeon, no other carrier has come out with news about screening the latest Abomination, so I'm crossing my fingers and putting my faith in Amazon.de

It's still time to arrange a trip to a country showing it. If it wasn't in winter I would actually might try...

How does it look in UK, btw? Are all tickets sold already?

Last I checked, no, but I cannot drag the whole family over Silvesterabend to the UK, despite friends in Chiswick and Brighton, just because I'm Sherlock-obsessed! The children would throw Sherlock-epic-proportion sulks and better half might not be THAT understanding of my obsession, with the in-laws traditionally visiting at this particular time. Got a real break, though, NTLive is going to show Tom Hiddleston's Coriolanus: my favourite Shakespeare play with Loki as Caius Marcius in the title role! Already booked tickets for everybody, :D

Sadly, no news yet for French cinemas or any other possible venues! Must keep passport ready in case I have to travel to Jersey or Guernsey or mainland Britain, which the Almighty forbid, but such is obsession. If I'm not working over the New Year ( shift work being really tricky,) I might pop over to the main event!

Re: Coriolanus - it says Thursday 12 November. Which is a bit bad time to go to Frankfurt. And getting another free day so soon would be another problem.  :(

Mark G is in it, right?

I've got my tickets for my son and I but I don't remember how much it cost. However, I'm seriously thinking of trying to figure out a cosplay. My son could easily do a modern look with his slightly tailored suit. I have a pseudo-Victorian option for me that would work.

Think I'll (finally!) wear my Sherlock T-shirt -- even though it'll almost certainly be a cold evening.  I'll wear a turtleneck under it, and maybe another layer (at least a tank top) under that, and leave my coat in the car.  And might as well wear my Sherlock pendant too!  (Both are the wallpaper design, plus the shirt has Mr. Smiley.)
