... during the intermission the girls in front of our row didn't stop gabbing about how brilliant BC is, how much they were looking forward to the Special....

Well, in that case, I'd guess that you had them pegged!

And you're certainly welcome for the McKellen link.

As for the McKellen Q&A, I finally found it, here!

Did those of you who have played that get reasonably good audio?  It sounded to me like they had the microphone sitting on top of the air conditioner!  I'll try again tomorrow (if I remember), in case it's just something bad in today's system load, and if that works significantly better, I'll post the link on the "Mr. Holmes" thread as well.

Empty? How could it be empty? In the Hamlet screening we were 1500 in one auditorium, jam-packed, sardine-like, take your elbow out of my ribs, to use the politest version; old, young, men, women, anyone above the age of thirteen, only the proverbial kitchen sink was missing! @Arcadia, you are pulling our collective legs, right?

What were the Hamlet-screening audiences like here in the US -- anybody?  That might give us some idea of what to expect for the Special (assuming that they weren't all major Shakespeare groupies).  I will say that the theater was pretty packed for the midnight showing of the first Hobbit movie, and some of those people may have been there because Martin Freeman was in it -- but I got the impression that most were LotR movie fans -- probably there to see Legolas!

I'd say the theater was about half-full for the "rerun". Couldn't get tickets to the live broadcast anywhere, they were all sold out weeks in advance. Well-mannered crowd, didn't talk at all. :p

I thought they recorded it in the middle of the highway. Gave up.

I suppose they must do some kind of market research before they decide to show a TV special in movie theaters, so my guess is they are expecting large enough audiences in the US, even without massive advertising. It is an interesting question, though: How would you advertise The Abominable Bride for everybody, including people who have never heard of Sherlock and aren't necessarily interested in the series itself?

Perhaps this is another reason why the non-English speaking parts of Europe are being left out - not enough expected interest. Despite the number of German fans on this forum, I don't know any person in real life around here who has watched Sherlock. It's just another British detective series that's aired on public television every other year or so. *Sigh*...

I hadn't thought about how they might advertise -- but the most obvious way would be an announcement (not a commercial, oh heavens no!) following the PBS broadcast on the 1st

According to PBS, Season 3 had on average 6.6 million viewers.  American movie theaters nowadays tend to have multiple auditoriums, each with a fairly small capacity -- maybe a couple hundred seats?  It's scheduled to run in about 630 US theaters, for an estimated total capacity of 126,000 per showing, times two makes 252,000 total -- which is 3.8 percent of the anticipated PBS audience.  So I don't think they're just smokin' something.

Still no word on any additional countries.  But that doesn't mean there won't be any.

I know my showing of Hamlet was sold out. Don't remember the capacity of that theater but at least 200 in there. I expect something close to that for the special potentially. The theater I'm going to is in a highly educated part of the Twin Cities with several universities within a 15 minute drive in any direction.

That's the television broadcast -- or the theater showing?  Or both?

None of the NTL productions I've been to have been even close to sold out.  Hamlet was probably one of the more crowded, but then that was the first showing too.

 By that time, I'll have seen the DVD so often, I'll know the lines by heart.

I got an advertising call the other night from a network company. They asked me how I currently watch television and I said, quite honestly, never. They guy was like, what?!? And I said my screen wasn't hitched up to anything other than occasionally my computer and that I wasn't the tiniest bit interested in German TV so if he didn't mind, I would hang up now.

NWF is the closest I come to actual TV, with occasional forays into ARD and ZDF, but Easter? Are they for real? Odeon said they would air it, but now their page is blanc on the Sherlock Special, so DVD it is!

That's quite literally how Series 2 went for us!  Amazon mailed out our pre-ordered DVD in mid-January, right after "Reichenbach" aired in the UK, so we had it by early February.  PBS was still having Hartswood remove 8 minutes from each episode then, so when we watched their broadcast in May (!), it was quite a jolt each time they hit one of those cuts.

I don't follow this thread anymore, for silly reason that you guys might be able to predict everything (that is a compliment btw :)). Just want to share a quote that I picked up today XD, it's messed up but so much truth in it.

Low expectation is the key to happiness.

Dear VBS, if that quote held any truth in it, I would be the happiest person in the world, not excepting Mary Poppins, but sadly, that isn't the case: I believe that a pessimist is a well-informed optimist.

Amen to that, sister! :applause: It took a major occurrence in my life for me to figure that out, but things have been so much better for me once I did.

I can see why it might not be true for other people, though. I suspect different personalities find happiness in different ways. But this way sure works for me.

Of course there are many other things; health, family, good episodes of Sherlock...Or maybe you practice it less than you should. :)

Other quote: Happiness is warm puppy. (I swear it's not from me :P). It works as well. XD

A pessimist is also a more-experienced optimist?

I am struggling, don't think I am very successful in trying yet. But yes, for some, it works really well.

Fun fact, the person who quotes it (a podcaster) was talking about his marriage. XD

What I use is more like: you are the only person responsible for your happiness.

Did the DVD versions still reflect the cuts or had the episodes been restored?

At the moment, I'm more concerned about having to travel to Jersey yet again, and on and on NewYear's Day on top of that, just to see the Sherlock Special! We know that the French have been the British mistrusted allies for at least a century, but that is carrying vengefulness a bit too far!

As far as I am aware, even the DVDs sold by PBS have the intact  episodes.  Not knowing about the cuts, we had bought the Season 1 DVD from them, and those episodes are the full 90 minutes long.  For Series 2, we had pre-ordered from the UK, so of course we got the full episodes that time too.  And as of Series/Season 3, there are no cuts.

Thank goodness you don't have to travel to New Jersey!

Personally, I would gladly travel to New Jersey on Antares in order to watch the Special live, but the rest of the family are still being obstreperous!
