For starters, try finding plain white curtains at least partially made from a natural material. The best offer I got was custom made 100% polyester for, oh, what was it? 500 Euro? I said thanks but no thanks. I will ask my mother.

Posted

What were they selling instead, red and blue polka dots made from plastic? Oh, wait, let me guess: curtains are out, blinds are in....

You've got me curious now, I'm going to have to pay more attention to other people's houses and see what they're putting on the windows. Ours is all drapery of one kind or another, all custom made by ... ta-da! ... my Mom. I wouldn't even begin to know how to replace them.

Posted

I think mine are cotton in the bedroom. Living room might be synthetic. Pretty sure natural ones aren't that hard to come by here, don't know about white ones though.

Posted

What seems to be extinct here are the pull-down window shades with the spring in the roller so that they go back up when you tug just so. Mom still has a fewwith springs that work, but the part that covers the window is heavily patched with tape.

Posted

Oh god, all our windows in our summer cottage have those. I hate those things! They either come all the way down, or suddenly shoot all the way up. For me. My mom works miracles with them. I just don't have the touch.

Two broke this year; I cheered. :D

One of the rooms I teach in has this new kind with a circular chain to pull it up or down; similar to the old ones with strings, but much, much better as the chain is too heavy to get tangled on itself the way the string does. And they're quite nice looking, too. But I think they are synthetic, which I agree with Toby, that doesn't endear them to me.

As for natural-fiber white curtains, I've ended up using "flour-sack" dish towels in my kitchen. I wish they were an inch or two wider, and I'm pretty sure something more suitable would be available online. But hey, I already had 'em, they keep the sun from glaring in, and after a good ironing they don't look half bad.

But yeah, try online, Google "natural curtains."

Eurgh, did he honestly think you would say 'oh yes, that's fine, as long as we're completely alone and isolated and you're naked too'  :wtf:

It's conceivable that he was on the level -- in which case I can certainly understand his being nervous about asking you to pose for him.  But according to what I've heard from art-school friends, the school generally supplies the models, and in a classroom setting.  Dunno about photography classes, though, since photography is typically more of a one-on-one procedure.  But I've never heard of a naked photographer!

..., Glad that you declined his invitation!

Yep, this was definitely one to go with your instincts, imo. I run into creepy guys too, but never one that was that persistent ... that's a bit scary.

Yes. Each of his idea of not frightening me sounded worse and worse. I don't why he thought it would work, on anyone.

And if he had done researches about me, he certainly missed something very crucial, I hate being photographed, that is almost a pet peeve of mine nowadays.

Regarding his nervousness that I think reached a bit scary level; he would sweat excessively, red-faced, shaky bit trembling, continuous talking and dismissing himself at the same time or very silent, nervous laughs, sometimes gibberish, and shifting his legs and couldn't stand still. Those may not sound unusual, but there was a weird vibe that is a bit unsettling, especially compared to his normal self. And he was not on drug or drink or anything. Anyway, I always think that he was unwell and remember other friends commented about the same thing.

And although there is no way I want to have anything to do with him anymore, ever, to be fair he was actualy a nice friend back then, as far as I know. He was smart, helpful and even charming. He was even popular at school. I actually never told anyone who know him this story, sometimes I feel I should, as whatever happened it could mean something disturbing about him? Aiz..

@Do something for the sake of husband/boyfriend/others?

Yes. By not forcing them to play Scrabble or any board games, or forcing them to join my outdoor activities. XD

Yay! So it's not only me. I broke the ones at home, current office and previous office, almost broke the one in the restaurant when I tried to see scenery oitside. It gets to the point that I get swat on my hand everytime I attempt to do something with it in office and home.

Classic curtain still work better for me. Only better, not best, because there was a time when the whole track came crashing down on my head when I pulled too hard. Now we have them secured to the wall and we have bracket around it to secure the sides as well. XD

I've also managed to bring down a curtain rod or two in my time. But I'm less of a she-hulk and more of a bull in a china shop. :d

Whuat..

Yes, there are proves that I am stronger than average woman, however, I maintain my story that that curtain track was fixed to the wall with snot, not proper screw or nail.

I actually broke a ton of things because I move a lot+careless. Two different people called me 'minitron' (because megatron in Transformer is destructive but I am not that big).

My worst time was when I broke aircon, printer, shower head simultaneously after I quitted my job one time, as if I had tons of money to my disposal! I also shattered big wardrobe mirror and brought down bookshelf (common, how else does one get book on top shelf? You climb it!). Oh once I queued in the bank, got bored, played with those stainless steel queuing barrier and brought down everything in the whole queue (it's chain reaction and bloody loud), my poor companion, I also tried pretending not to know me.

I am much less destructive now, but you should see how my mom protects the eggs everytime she comes for visit and does grocery shopping with me. :)

What is it like? I was told it's a mythical place and not real. :p

Introvert today:

MISSION: pet a dog without talking to the owner.

RESULT: failed.

DETAILED REPORT: I don't want to talk about it.

I've been in Pisa (Italy) for two days, there were sooooo many tourists!! I though :"Hey, everyone in Pisa TODAY?". I think I have to give up going anywere without being pushed a way and one other by thousands of tourists (chinese tourists, I would say, is there anyone from China?).

Then I came home saying to myself:"Oh, finally some peace". Obviously, my parents and my brother, as soon as I arrived: "Tell us where you have been, what you have done, what you have visited, what you have eaten!!".

Please, I need someone to help me :nope_sad::grovel:

I'll save you!

I love Italy, never been to Pisa though. I've been to Rome and was a bit freaked out by the sheer volume of nuns.

I've never been to Italy, but I wouldn't be surprised if your hordes of Chinese tourists were actually Japanese. Last time I actually went anywhere, they seemed to form quite a noticeable percentage of the tourists.

Were they mostly in organized groups, with each tour guide carrying an identifying flag for them to follow? Oh, and when someone took their picture, did they make a "V" sign with their fingers?

Japanese tourists are renowned for being in big enthusiastic groups and carrying big cameras. Might sound a bit stereotypical, but then I think every country has it's stereotypes when they are tourists. Won't list 'em in case anyone gets offended.

After doing a bit of internet research, I find that the "V"sign has caught on in China too. Oh well -- they were Asian tourists!

Can't see your gif. :(

But it doesn't sound fun, :blanket: I don't want to be there. Forget that I asked. :D

Aiz.

I can imagine but don't know how to help. Come here and pretend you are doing research? :D

Oh, the V sign is that common? I guess that confirm my theory that being photographed sucks, people don't know what to do with their hands therefore the V sign, and..ehm.. sorry Carol, the other trend is making your face. You know... duck face.. :p

Yes, so actually human are being enslaved and forced to pose for photograph! Nobody actually likes it. Right? Right!

The problem with tourists, I guess it's applicable for worldwide tourists, I see people are more appreciative with their looks compared to the scenery. Let me lie like a beached whale in front of this sunset or pretend to catch it between my finger. Get out from my scenery! :p

Or the touch and go, pose pose pose, noisy noisy noisy, and leave.

Oh, so there are a lot of China tourists in Italy too. I see them everywhere nowadays.

Yes! Very large groups, as you were saying! And no, anyone with V sign, but a lot of people making photos with duck face! I really don't understand them :/

The thing that made me laugh and nervous at the same time was that everyone wanted to make a photo in front of the leaning tower like if they were holding it to not make it fall. EVERYONE! Guys, a little bit more of creativity....

Chinese tourists (and japanese, of course) will invade all the world! :sofa:

But, just an hypotesis...if Chinese and Japanese people are all aroud the world....who's there in China and in Japan?

Posted

Since there are over a billion people in China alone I think there are still a fair few left there ;)

Nah, just kidding, everyone knows the only people in China are the Irish.

Posted

And archeologists.

I haven't noticed so much of what you gals are talking about; in fact, I thought the tourists were greatly reduced and more subdued this summer. But then, it's HOT. No one has any energy to do anything but sit in a café and have iced drinks, maybe.

They don't bother me much anyway, most of them seem to be having a good time, which is more than I can say for the locals. :P

Thanks.  Despite my avatar, don't think I'd care to be recorded for posterity with that facial expression!

I used to be camera-shy (which is presumably why people do those silly things).  Then I had a boyfriend who was forever taking candid shots of me, and I got tired of seeing pictures of myself making a "don't you dare take my picture now!" face.  It seemed far better to just ignore the idiot, and even though he still took pictures of me with my hair a mess or whatever, at least I looked like me instead of like some lunatic.

Of course the whole V-sign and duck-face thing is for posed photos, but I'm a lot more relaxed about those as well now -- I just tell myself that I'm happy, and my face sort of goes along with it.  At least they don't have pictures of me looking any goofier than usual!

One of the modern life that I don't like is that majority of people has camera now, the concept of respecting privacy is getting thinner and thinner, the absurdity of wanting to document everything or everyone and then broadcast it is annoying to me.

Maybe I am too grumpy in this area, but please give me a chance to miss you.
