Ah Al Pacino! What are you doing there?!

I watched "Holiday Inn" and "While You Were Sleeping". Seen both before, still like both.

The Greatest Showman, 9/10. I had no idea what I was walking into, it was a delight! Not much of a plot but exhilarating visuals.

^ I would really like to see that, though "not much of a plot" is a bit discouraging.  I like plot.  (Not that I'd necessarily expect a great plot with a movie like that.)

Yeah, I agree, but in this case not much plot is needed. The main theme is "imagination", and they capture that exceptionally well. And it's just so ... exuberant! Go see it!

Every now and then I see one of the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies on TV, so I've been recording and watching them.  I like looking for similarities between them and BBC "Sherlock", and other Holmesian things I've seen.  Tonight it was "Sherlock Holmes in Dressed to Kill".  I quite liked it.  ^^

Some enjoyable little moments:

- References to The Woman, 'A Scandal in Bohemia' in The Strand, Irene-style female antagonist.

- Holmes and Watson find a girl tied up in a closet and promise to buy her the best music box in London.  Watson tries to cheer up said girl by making duck sounds, only serving to make her cry more.

- Holmes being nice to Mrs. Hudson when he could easily have been cross over her stupidity.  Holmes being nice to Watson when he could easily have been cross over his stupidity.

- Dr. Watson being doctor Watson.

- Grumpy Holmes can't figure out the code.  "Holmes?  It's morning."  "Allow me to congratulate you on a brilliant bit of deduction."

- Grumpy Watson can't stand the sound of Holmes' violin a second longer.  "Do me a favor: Not again."  Grumpy Holmes keeps playing anyway.

- Watson as the 'conductor of light', twice.  Some people who aren't geniuses have an amazing ability to stimulate it in others.

- "Thanks, Old Bean!"

- "...Having read with great interest your monograph on the ashes of 140 different varieties of tobacco."

- Amazing how fire exposes our priorities.

- Is that the outline of a head on the wall, with bullet holes in it?

I remember loving those when I was a kid, I should try to find some. There was one on TV a few weeks ago, it wasn't half bad.

Which one was it?  I wonder if I watched it.

Can't remember anymore. I think I mentioned it in a thread, but no idea which one. Possibly even this one!

Star Wars episode VIII the last Jedi 7/10

After being disappointed in The force awakens and Rogue One my expectations were low, that being said it was better than both movies but it was sooo bloated and some characters made stupid decisions

Spoilers/ nitpicking below

- it was stupid of Admiral Holdo not tell Poe her plan, if she told the plan then Rose and Finn would not have left and Poe would not have staged a coup solely to get his arse kicked by Leila and it was stupid of Kylo to waste time firing on Luke when he could have destroyed the rebel base!

- I hated the scene of Leila floating in space, I really did, It was just so stupid!

- I hated the deus ex machinas

- I hated the introduction of Rose, don't introduce a character solely to have her fall in love within a SINGLE DAY and then put her in mortal peril and then expect me to care. It doesn't work that way, if she was introduced in The force awakens then I would have cared, but now it's just very sudden

- Emperor Snoke's erm.... bathrobe looked ridiculous and ugly

- the fish nuns were the most weirdest characters ever created, along with that creature Luke drank milk of

- On a more positive note it was the funniest star wars movie I've seen, but also the bleakest.

- a lot of people hated Luke's characterisation, I didn't. They say it's an insult to The Original Trilogy, who says that? You? Your fan fiction? The Expanded Universe? I'm sorry but the Expanded Universe is just wish fulfilment, People change a lot in 30 years, and Luke had minimal training so I don't see him successfully resurrecting the Jedi like his Expanded Universe counterpart did.

I think The Last Jedi is the first film where I've really liked Luke -- seems to me he's finally got a personality, which makes him more interesting to me.

Baby Driver - 9/10

Edgar my man, doing it again!

Definitely one of the year’s best films, by one of today’s most consistently great directors.

Excited to see what he puts out next.

I saw "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" this afternoon, on a whim.  The theater was packed, and popcorn was *everywhere*.  I wasn't a fan of the original "Jumanji", but I enjoyed this one.  It was funny and entertaining.

Could anyone see "Darkest hour", by Joe Wright? It is about Churchill and the first war operations in may 1940. Seems interesting (in general, and related with my assumptions about Sherlock's last episode), but I'm always afraid to waste my time (I live far from cities and I have to find someone for the children, so it must be worth going), thus I'd like other viewers' opinion.

I was supposed to see Jumanji the week before Christmas but could face going in the end. I thought it looked fun, though I liked the original too.

Nope, not seen Darkest Hour sorry Janyss, so can't comment there.

Finally saw Star Wars. I don't know, I thought it was terribly uneven ... like it couldn't decide if it was a children's film or a serious drama. And Adam Driver still doesn't impress me. And too many minor characters. And, and ... but there were some good bits too. 6/10, maybe?

Janyss, my brother-in-law thought the Darkest Hour was great, for what that's worth. He said he thought Gary Oldman would win the Oscar for it.

I am hearing so many different opinions regarding the new Star Wars that after initial disinterest, I now wish I could see it. But taking a day trip to see the movie in English is not feasible right now and I am not paying 12, 13 or more euro to see a dubbed version.

It sure sounds odd. And I have a feeling I won't get much out of it because I don't particularly like Kylo Ren.

Thanks Arcadia. I've planned to go tomorrow, I'll let you know.

I thought it was pretty good, better than the preceding one, anyhow.  I found Kylo Ren more. ah, *interesting* than last time, and Luke more interesting than ever.  And never fear, there'll be a DVD along pretty soon.
