I never noticed before, but in the Christmas party after Sherlock says excuse me John calls him Sherl.

Now I need to rewatch that bit. I wonder if john just stops mid pronunciation, lets the word drop off instead of finishing it because of the way Sherlock is behaving.

Posted

I don't know, there is a pause before Sherlock answers, so he doesn't get interrupted, and John says something else after so it's not like he's stopped talking.

Just rewatched that bit on Netflix. Even closed my eyes as I listened just to focus mainly because BBCAmerica is running a Sherlock marathon at the moment (TGG is on). My verdict is yes to the Sherl but it also sounds a little like he starts saying Sherlock but cuts off/gets too quiet before he pronounces the k sound.

Would make sense as he never calls him Sherl any other time and finds it hilarious when Janine does.

There is actually at least one other example of John uttering a "cut-off Sherlock," namely in Hounds when they're first at Dewar's Hollow. I've always thought that all he said was "Sherl," but only because he suddenly realized that Sherlock wasn't near enough to hear him.

Whereas Janine definitely says "Sherl." (And "Mike.")

I thought it started as early as The Great Game. After van buren supernova deduction, John was mesmerized and mumbled something like "oh Sherl".

I remember it because I replayed that one a lot back then.

P.S: Regarding Janine, I think John was just surprised someone else had the audacity to use that nick name beside him. :p

Maybe they have a rule: John must say "Sherl" once per series (and, apparently, *only* once).

So here's our challenge for Series 4: Spot the "Sherl"!

He didn't do it in TAB, did he?

Maybe because he calls him Holmes most of the time? Wait, did he? I need rewatch.

I didn't notice any, though there could have been one in one of the modern scenes. Yeah, we both need to watch it again.

Oh dear, sounds like we'll all need to watch it again to make sure we don't miss anything. What a hardship.

Yea, he does say Sherl in TGG after the supernova deduction you're right, though it kind of ends in a gasp like he hasn't got the breath to go on. Does he say it in season 3 at any point?

Oops, I thought we did, but it's actually one in Series 1 and two in Series 2, so far as we've noticed. So should we be looking for three in Series 3? (No wonder they're in no hurry to go beyond Series 4!)

Might need to comb through that too ;)

I'm not that keen on season 3, it has some scenes that are gems but the whole wedding/baby/Mary kind of ruins it for me. The thought of going through season 3 feels like a drag, because to me the wedding and the baby feels like it spells the end of everything that made the first two seasons fun and exciting. I don't like Amanda Abbington much either, I did in the beginning but after the various insulting things she's said on Twitter about the fandom (yet still seems to appear in every convention possible) I don't like her much anymore. I'm hoping season 4 gets back to being Sherlock and John as fast as possible, I know it has been debated plenty of times elsewhere but I don't see how it can ever be Sherlock and John when he has a wife and baby at home. Season 3 makes me sad for Sherlock, I don't want to be sad in season 4 too - despite how harrowing they say it is.

It's always puzzled me how Sherlock, even as good as he is, could deduce Adler's measurements. I've watched that scene several times and apart from possibly a split second when she first walks in his eyes never leave her face. Now I've realized that he saw pictures of her beforehand. He was shown pics from her website as well as candid shots at the palace. So making a big deal about Sherlock studying a naked woman is really nothing. I don't know why this never occurred to me before, I'm obviously I'm no Sherlock.

She does specifically say that she told him though. I suppose she could have meant via the website, or she expected him to oogle her and but he actually just knew from the website.

What insulting things? The only negative things I recall her saying were about the "fans" who threatened to kill her. I can kinda understand why she wouldn't be too keen on them!

Did I miss something?

Ohhhh yea, definitely. I can't find the exact details right now because I'm about to leave work and hit the oh-so-delightful rush hour traffic, but most recently she posted a page from the script and then absolutely lost her sh*t when fans dared to put filters over it so it could actually be read. She also went off about, I can't remember if it was fanfic or fanart, but one of them and how people should stop doing it. Which if BC and MF have been subjected to fanart of them in all sorts of positions and laugh it off she doesn't really have a leg to stand on. I'll have to try to hunt down the screen grabs when I have time.

It's just such an over the top knee-jerk reaction.

Yeah, sure sounds like a wrong-side-of-the-bed day!

Did anybody try pointing out to her that these are *Sherlock* fans she's talking about. Don't give us data and expect us to ignore it.

Wonder if maybe she'd had her wrist slapped for posting that page, and reacted by trying to pass the blame? A perfectly human reaction, though not a particularly admirable one.

But regarding the fan works, especially the graphic illustrations, I can fully understand her not liking it one little bit. As for the guys laughing it off, that was their public reaction. We have no way of knowing how they actually felt about it (though her comments could be a clue!).

I think a lot of people said you can't post something like that to fans of a detective show and not expect them to do some detecting.

They probably don't like it, it probably freaks them out, at least in the beginning, but like you said it's how they react in public. She can rant about it all she wants in private but don't do it in public and not expect to get people's backs up.

It sounds ridiculous, but I actually had a pervy 'fanfic' written about me by some people at work once and I found it hilarious. I think if you're lucky enough to be in a huge successful show with devoted followers you have to be gracious about things and accept that fandom in a huge part of things these days. I wish I could find the actual comments because it wasn't just 'it makes me uncomfortable' it was equally as vitriolic as the comments above.

I have to admit I don't get Twitter. It's like people don't realise it's out there for everyone to see and it's actually real people you're talking to. So many public figures seem to get embroiled in rants and feuds and it mystifies me.

Yeah, I can see how one's first, uhh, exposure to such things could be quite a shock!

Oops, cross post.

@Besleybean - Yup, but the attitude bothers me, thinking it's okay to go off like on a public platform that makes me really uncomfortable. But everyone can have their own opinion, that's just the reason I went off her.

@Carol - I bet their eyes went wide with horror when they first came across something unexpectedly explicit ;)
