Taking this here because I kinda like the discussion / rant about TV and I wanted to give it some space...

Maybe I'm not as open minded as I think I am bit while I do not believe in censorship, I would like to be able for kids to be able to turn on a tv without being bombarded with a lot of the asinine stuff that passes for acceptable portrayals of American culture and norms.

Yeah, when you share space, those who chose to be, let's say more explicit/R rated in use of language or smoke toxic things like cigarettes or like to a have a good rumble with their friends or like to engage in so much PDA that it becomes more like a soft porn... Need to understand that we share public spaces, & because they chose to be like that, should be considerate. Be in environments, where that behavior is morally acceptable.

Now the PDA, behind closed doors only please. A nice 10 second kiss with rubbing on the back & hand holding in public ok... But beyond that.... BLECH!!!

You both make a good point, and I agree, it doesn't seem quite fair that those with the highest tolerance for smut seem to set the standard for what is "acceptable."

I personally don't mind "adult content" being on TV so much as I mind that increasingly there is no alternative to it. I don't like having to re-watch "Toy Story" for the nth time with the kids because there's nothing else on that's suitable for them to watch. And I don't like putting each kid in their own room with their own favorite video while I watch something else. I would much rather have new "family-friendly" shows to choose from, that we could all enjoy together.

Hmmm... I'm trying to remember what my family did about that when I was little. My parents didn't own a TV. They got rid of it when I was a toddler because the damn thing scared me no matter what was on. My one grandmother watched nature documentaries with me, or rather, she let me be around while she watched nature documentaries that she liked, and I found out that nature documentaries are not scary, and I liked animals and nature like any kid, so that was fine, especially since she was kind enough to record them first, scan for lions killing zebras with blood and guts on screen or such like, and kindly fast-forwarded them for me, with a curt explanation like "okay, the lion eats the zebra, that kind of stuff happens in the wild, you know, oh, look, here's a butterfly..."

My other grandparents just watched whatever my grandfather wanted no matter who was in the room, but since he was a peaceful man with peaceful tastes, it was either boring, like sports, or funny, and I never got the naughty jokes anyway, so we just had a blast with me laughing and not quite knowing about what.

I didn't see movies made expressly for kids until I began babysitting, and by then I was too old for them, technically, but I think they affected me more than the babysat.

Of course now, as a grown-up, I'm catching up on all I missed, and I watch way too many films... I love most kiddie flicks, but I know I wouldn't have liked them when I was the age they were made for. No idea what to watch with a big family. I don't even have any idea what is "suitable" or not for children. Depends on the kid, I guess. Some kids out there can stomach a lot more than me.

So I found out that adult Simba is voiced by the guy who played Ferris Bueller...? I always wondered why when I watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off Matthew Broderick (spelling?) sounded so familiar.

I totally didn't even notice when I watched the Lion King or Ferris Bueller's Day Off and I love that film.  Most of the Disney cartoons of the '90s I watched in the theater and was done with them after that.  Matthew Broderick is a talented actor.

My all time favourites are The Lion King* and Lord of the Rings (1-3).

But I also love Star Wars (III-VI), Jurassic Park, Regarding Henry, most Winnetou's, Peter in Magicland (odd translation), The King's speech and many many more...

* there are some great multilanguage clips on youtube, e.g. "Be prepared" featuring 24 languages... love it how differently Scar sounds!

What's your opinion of Jackson's Hobbit movies?

Posted

I thought the first one was nice to watch, but not as good as the LotR movies; I don't like that he didn't decide whether he wanted to do a funny/children's movie (beginning) or an epic one. The mix doesn't really work for me. It's okay, but nowhere close to my favourites. And the second one was really disappointing, haven't even bought the DVD... But I hope that the third one will make up for the second, I'm really looking forward to it!!

Well, Alex (who is more of a LotR ring buff than I am) says that Jackson strayed the furthest from those books in the middle movie.  So I'm hoping that -- now Jackson's got the middle Hobbit movie out of his system -- the third one will likewise stick relatively close to the book.

Keeping my fingers crossed, Carol... Really, the only part I liked in the last film was the one with the dragon (but the rest of the movie was totally worth sitting through for that).

I am finally watching the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I have always maintained that you can't take the Austen novels to any screen or stage, that they only work as novels, as it's the narrative voice that makes them so special, and you can't really capture that. But I have to admit, this version did not get awards for nothing. For anyone who would like to know what all this Austen stuff is about but can't bring themselves to read the actual books, I'd recommend it. I am particularly delighted with the casting. The famous portrayal of Mr Darcy by Colin Firth doesn't exactly bowl me over, but it's certainly very good, and the women - god, where did they find actresses who actually look like the ladies in paintings from that era instead of modern beauties? I swear Jane and Elizabeth seem to have stepped right off the book cover of my edition. And Jennifer Ehle is perfect as Lizzie. You have to look twice to see her beauty, and then wham - it hits you just like it does Darcy, when her face lights up with her charm and sly sense of humor and intelligence. "The liveliness of your mind" - she embodies that perfectly. And the script is very faithful to the original text.

I've never read anything by Austen, but (*ears perk up*) did you say Colin Firth?  All I've ever seen him in is Love Actually, but I really liked him in that.  So who knows....

Or maybe I'll just read the book someday.

I liked the beginning few scenes in Hobbit II -- everything till they left Beorn's house.  I had been really curious how they'd handle his inanely marvelous dogs and sheep, and was relieved to see that they took a very straightforward approach -- I would have liked to stay there longer!  And yeah, Bilbo and Smaug, that was utterly perfect (though I will say nothing about the dwarves' participation!).  But the whole middle of the movie -- bleh!

What, you haven't seen "The King's Speech"? Oh Carol, you've got to do something about that! It's a wonderful film, it really is. You have faster internet now, right? Okay, here's the trailer:

I watched The King's Speech the other day.  It is done very well.  I enjoyed it and might have my son watch it as we discuss WWII this year while reading the Chronicles of Narnia.

You do homeschooling? How nice that you have that possibility. Where I live, it's illegal, and most Germans have a huge objection to the very idea. This is something that often irritates me a bit in my for the most part very comfy home country, this inflexibility, the unwillingness to accept that what is good for one person may be wrong for the next. My countrymen don't get that individuals homeschooling their kids would not mean everybody has to or will do it, and that the public school system will not, in fact, break down.

I know about the fight for homeschooling in Germany.  I met the father of 1 family that does and heard about another family that finally got the custody of their kids back, but decided not to emigrate, because they wanted stay and fight the persecution.  Then in the US we have a German family that was granted asylum then had it revoked and almost to the point of being deported when the branch federal government who was pushing to deport them decided that they could stay indefinitely.  In the US homeschooling laws vary with each state.  I'm in a good area that allows students in the last 2 years of high school to be able to take college classes for free and the type of school doesn't matter.  If you run into any secret homeschoolers in your country, encourage them to keep persevering in that endeavor.
