It comes in cooked rice?  How very careless of the manufacturer!  I think VBS may be right, it could be simply rice grains that escaped having their hulls removed.  Note: Not the same thing as brown rice, which merely still has its bran layer, but not its hull.  Though come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing unhulled rice grains in white rice, only brown.  Are you buying cooked brown rice, Pseud?

Of course it's in her cooked rice. I put it there. I knew that transporter would come in handy some day.

I am one hundred per cent certain it is a seed and not uncooked or unhulled rice. It's in there to add flavour and after you heat the rice you take it out, it's normally in pilau rice meant for curries. It's pretty much always in there, it's not a one off.

Found a photo! It's the one that's not a clove. Possibly cardamom?

New rant/moan... I bought a hutch to move my guinea pigs outside for the summer, it's flat pack so I'm sure to have a frustrating few hours on the weekend trying to assemble it, but it just got delivered to my work address and it's so heavy I can't lift it to get it in my car. It is really necessary for a hutch to be so heavy?!

Posted

Googling cardamom and I agree that it does look like a seed pod for that spice. As for the hutch, depending on material and finished size, I'm not too surprised.

Posted

Oh, THAT seed. Oh. It actually worked. Bwahahahahaa......

Posted

It worked? What was it meant to do?!

I've hurt my shin by badly banging it with part of the hutch, maybe you can take perverse enjoyment from that instead?

I agree, the seed looks like cardamom.  Might have guessed that sooner, but didn't realize that the mystery seed was supposed to be in the rice, assumed it was one of those things that are sometimes present in uncooked rice and the company simply failed to sort them out.  (Yeah, I know, you said "why do they put them in" -- but I assumed that was just a touch of humor.)  (And yeah, I know what they say about "assume.")

As for the heavy hutch, it's probably made of particle board or something similar -- maybe outdoor plywood if it's actually made for outdoor use.  That stuff tends to be a lot heavier than regular wood.  Sounds to me like the sort of problem that could be solved pretty easily with a couple of burly friends and a six-pack, though you might want to throw in a pizza as well.

I did it myself in the end by carting it to the car piece by piece. The true test is whether I can manage to assemble it as well, I always have trouble balancing bits I'm trying to screw.

There's a pun just dying to be put to good use at the end of that sentence, but I'm too much of a lady to point it out.

I thought that as I was typing it, lol. Just like when warning people off hitting me with their weapon, I was waiting for that to turn dirty too.

Me too, darn it!

But congratulations on your ingenuity, and shame on the rest of us for not thinking of it.

Mom used to do the same thing with 40-50 pound (20 kg?) bags of birdseed. Some nice young man at the store would always offer to carry it to the car for her. When she got home, she'd take a scoop and a bucket out to the car, fill the bucket with seed, then empty it into the metal trashcan that she used as a birdseed bin.

Both of you know how to use your brains. :)

FOR GOD'S SAKE, WHY CAN'T PEOPLE DO THEIR JOBS PROPERLY?!!!

I've been trying to arrange to get my scrap car picked up, and it's like trying to get blood out of a f*****g stone!! I finally arranged for someone to get it today, and after waiting around all day and them not turning up I rang and was told they were here at half 8 this morning and rang my mobile when they couldn't get an answer at the door. I WAS HERE WAITING! Obviously they either didn't knock very hard or didn't come. Then he was adamant he had left a voicemail, except I haven't got one and when he read out the phone number he had written it down wrong. What the hell is wrong with people? He asks if I want it booked back in on Monday - I work, like most people, I do not have time to sit around waiting all sodding day for you to maybe turn up again. ARGH! I have to get it off the road asap because of insurance issues with it being on a public road. I've been sitting around all sodding day, not being able to do anything, looking out of the window constantly, and to be told they did turn up and I magically missed them is beyond galling. I'm so angry I feel sick.

I'm not sure it's ingenuity, more like necessity. That's how I get the bags of mulch out of my trunk after the hefty young men at the hardware store sling it in there; a bucketful at a time, until they're light enough for wimpy little me to lift. I do a lot of things like that; it's what comes of not having a he-man around to do stuff for you. I'm often amazed at how "helpless" some women are, but it's because they can be. Grrlz like me don't have that option. After listening to most women complain about their husbands most of my adult life, though, I'm not sure I mind the trade off. :D

I also have decent upper body strength compared to many women my age, but I don't do anything to make it so ... it's just my lifestyle. I have to lift heavy things a lot, things like that.

Story: I had a membership in a fitness club for awhile (wish I still did, but that's a different story). I don't know a thing about all those silly looking machines, so I hire an instructor to set up a routine, etc. She does a fitness test ... how much weight I can lift, what's my gait, my weight, things like that.

She looks like she's about 20, pretty, slim as a whip, all those intimidating things that I dreaded about going to a fitness club in the first place. But she's nice, and thorough, and she goes through the list of things I need to work on, and saves the best for last: "You're quite strong." I beam and start to pat myself on the back, and then she adds: "For your age."

I have trained to lower my expectation about how people are supposed to do their jobs so much... and still be disappointed. I'm still not sure how to fix that. The payback is probably, when someone actually does a good job, especially in similar method, I look at the with sparkling anime eyes.

:patpatpat: Never ever trust a fitness instructor. They exist to make you feel like crap regardless how fit you are.

You don't pay fitness instructor to make you feel like that, I can do it for free. :)

Ha ha, success, just finished building the hutch. :D Following on from what Arcadia said about the necessity of doing things yourself - all the reviews for this hutch were women saying 'my husband put it together', 'my boyfriend built it', 'my dad assembled it,' blah blah blah, and I did it myself without even needing an extra pair of hands (though they would have been useful a few times!). Feeling very accomplished. :D

By myself I put together bookshelves often enough that say have 2 people do it regardless of if there is someone else around. I'll get help putting the larger ones upright upon completion.

Rosie the Riveter lives on! :D

The funny thing is: Rosie is before my time by a few decades but I know who she is. And I didn't learn about her in school.

Rosie is before my time and not my country and I still know about her. It's the rockabilly look I think.

Well the rockabilly style is the reason I like her. I realise she stands for a lot more than that but it's what nabs my attention.

That's my girl(s)!

And Rosie is my spirit animal. :D

BTW, I LOVE Rockwell. I was so damn lucky to stumble upon his exhibition as I was in D.C. The one and only one exhibition where people were walking around beaming with big smiles.
