Who are your all time favourite TV/Movie characters, and why?

A few of mine:

The Doctor (Doctor Who)

Spock (Star Trek)

Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Star Trek)

Han Solo (Star Wars)

Data (Star Trek TNG)

Odo (Star Trek DS9)

Severus Snape (Harry Potter)

Ripley (Alien & Aliens in particular)

Rick Deckard (Blade Runner)

Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter)

Sawyer (Lost)

John Locke (Lost)

Sayid Jarrah (Lost)

Gregory House (House)

I suppose I have a tendency to gravitate to characters who are outsiders; who don't quite fit in. I also like characters with murky pasts and prickly character traits. I am also fond of characters who aren't shy about showing their intellect/brilliance.

Who are your favourites?

Methos (Highlander: the Series)

Avon (Blakes Seven)

The Doctor

Ace (Doctor Who classic companion)

I probably have more but those are the ones that come to mind that make me bounce and squeak

Posted

Ianto Jones (Torchwood)

Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1)

Stephen Maturin (Master and Commander)

Tom Paris (ST Voyager)

Trip Tucker (ST Enterprise)

Jamie McCrimmon (Classic Who)

And of course Sherlock Holmes (canon, Granada and BBC)

I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now!

I tend to like shy, intelligent, loyal characters. They all happen to look good in suits as well. :)

Oh, do I have to choose? *sigh*

In no particular order...

John Hart (Torchwood)

Spike (Buffy)

Willow (Buffy)

Ianto Jones (Torchwood)

Rodney McKay (Stargate)

Daniel Jackson (Stargate)

Teal'c (Stargate)

Duncan McLeod (Highlander) (I watched the series before the movies...)

Spock (Star Trek)

Data (Star Trek)

Ezri Dax (Star Trek)

About a gazillion more characters, and I have purposefully stayed away from Lost...

Sherlock and John from BBC Sherlock - because, well, it's obvious, isn't it?! :) I could elaborate a bit, I suppose:

Sherlock is wonderfully emotionally complex. Every episode is like peeling of a layer of his personality. He's brilliant, believes in letting logic rather than emotions rule your decisions, yet is passionate about protecting his friends.

John is great because he accepts Sherlock unconditionally, doesn't get easily insulted, and simply has Sherlock's back all the time.

Sam from LOTR - He's the loyal, trustworthy best friend and back-up of the main character (kind of like John Watson). I love that sort of character!

Oscar Schindler from Schindler's List - A complex character; originally on the side of the enemy, and in a way stays on that side, at least with respect to public appearance, but he goes through a transformation of character. The way he saves the lives of so many jews, and then in the end doesn't even feel like he's done enough, is deeply moving.

Edmund from Narnia - seems a bit childish, perhaps ;)  but his character is also one that develops through 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. He is the underdog that turns out a hero!

I forgot to mention Edmund - and I like him for the same reason you say you do. The Flawed Hero (the more flawed and tormented the better) - I think that's my favorite type and The Loyal Friend Who Is Never Fully Appreciated (until it's too late - at least almost) is a very close second.

Don't be afraid of seeming childish. I still read lots of childrens' books and watch kiddie movies. There's a quote I love from Erich Kästner (great German poet and author of books for all ages) that, when translated into English, roughly goes like this:

"Only those who manage to grow up and still remain children become truly human".

Never thought of that parallel before, but Sam is my favorite of the four young LotR hobbits -- the only one who really seems to understand what's going on -- and John is my favorite Sherlock character.  (My over-all favorite hobbit, though, has always been Bilbo.  Make of that what you will!)

I love him! Martin Freeman did an extraordinary job portraying him. The little quirks and facial expressions of that man... :-) He made it hilarious. Honestly, the movie would not have been nearly as good without Freeman, I'm convinced.

The flawed hero... that's the right expression. Couldn't agree more.

Um...I think my list (in no particular order) goes like this:

The Doctor (Doctor Who)

Rose Tyler (Doctor Who)

Mickey Smith (Doctor Who)

Clara...I don't even know what her full name is...(Doctor Who)

The reason I mostly have 9/early 10th doctor companions is because those are the only ones I've seen (and one or two random 11th episodes)

Captain Jack Harkness (Torchwood)

Toshiko Sato (Torchwood)

Ianto Jones (Torchwood)

For some reason Owen and Gwen have somehow not made it onto my list...(but Tosh definitely has)

Gandalf (LOTR)

Sam (LOTR)

Éowyn (LOTR)

Legolas (LOTR)

Meriadoc Brandybuck (sorry, couldn't resist typing his full name) (LOTR)

Aragorn (LOTR)

Basically almost everyone in LOTR.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

My favourite LOTR character is Faramir, from the book primarily, but also from the extended editions of the film. I didn't like him as much in the theatrical release. I was always fond of Radagast the Brown too.

Tosh and PC Andy - Torchwood

Bob from - Dresden Files (both tv and books)

Kenzie - Lost Girl

Harry Kim - ST Voyager

Tony Stark - Marvel movieverse

There are parallels, aren't there? Solid, down-to-earth sort of person being pulled into dangerous adventures by an extraordinary friend, who comes to rely on him while not necessarily letting him in on all of his plans and motifs? Also strong common sense, provider of comic relief, extremely loyal to the hero, easily underestimated... They belong to the same character "type", I guess.

Also, there's the parallel relationship situation with Sam getting married to a really nice girl and Frodo never pairing off with anybody (for different reasons than Sherlock, though... I always assumed Frodo was just too much affected by all that happened to him to have energy left for loving anybody new or leading a normal life).

I wonder whether they'll touch on the problem of being "torn in two" for John. I don't think it would necessarily have to happen. First of all, there is no similarity whatsoever between Sherlock and Frodo (who really did need Sam), secondly, it wasn't an issue at all for the original Dr Watson (who was in some stories virtually pushed out of the house by his wife to go help Holmes) and thirdly, there isn't such an incompatibility any more between adventure and being married nowadays, because women today aren't seen as too fragile and domestic to have anything to do with the former.
