Favorite Quotes (All Series)

Another favorite quote (and, once again, from my favorite episode):

"All that matters to me is the work. Without that my brain rots."

I've used "all that matters is the work" as a kind of mantra lately when my chosen profession demanded some kind of personal sacrifice and it works like a dream, because of course Sherlock is right (once more), and the brain would rot if not given anything meaningful to do. I only wish I had his level of unflagging enthusiasm for his occupation (as for the level of expertise, that's of course utterly unattainable, but enviable non the less).

Just found out what Sherlock says about London in the latest trailer, and I just love this quote:

I need to get to know London again. Breathe it in. Feel the quiver of its' beating heart

Who talks like that besides Sherlock?

Exactly. They created a language of his own for him, part Victorian, part modern, part unique. It adds to the overall impression that he's not "quite of this world". He is a rather theatrical character. But so well acted and set off by Freeman's interpretation of Watson, that he becomes believable.

I love that aspect of the character. He sort of personifies the extraordinary, the poetic, the adventurous. One can totally understand why people are drawn to him in spite of his rather "interesting" social skills.

So here is one my favorites lines in "The Empty Hearse"! Don't read it if you haven't watched this episode yet!

I've warned you...

Mary Morstan: You’re dead.

Sherlock Holmes: No. I’m quite sure I checked. Excuse me. [Dips a napkin into some water and wipes off his fake moustache. Looks at John’s moustache] Does yours rub off, too?

Oh yes, that is brilliant! As well as this:

"Before you do anything you might regret; one question, let me ask one question." Points to John's mustache. "Are you really gonna keep that?"

Just to be on the safe side I have moved this thread to the series 3 section. Do however please continue to use spoiler boxes for any series 3 quotes.

So, so, so hard to choose favourite quotes from a show that is full of fantastic dialogue. But, if I had to pick just a few favourites, I would have to go for:

"Dear God, what is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring."

"But the flirting's over now Sherlock, Daddy's had enough now!"

"Don't make me into a hero, John. Heroes don't exist and if they did I certainly wouldn't be one of them."

"What do people usually say?" "Piss off."

"Everything I said, it's not real. I was just playing the game."

"Because I had a row, in the shop. With a chip and pin machine."

"Not good?" "Bit not good."

"Merry Christmas, Molly Hooper."

"You're insane!" "You're just getting that now?"

"Are you wearing any pants?" "No."

"Bored!"

"But it's the solar system!"

Ok, I have a few new favourite quotes from series 3:

Sherlock: "Just put me back in London. I need to know the place again, breathe it in. Feel every quiver of its beating heart."

Sherlock: "And what about John Watson. Have you seen him?"

Mycroft: "Oh yes, we meet up every Friday for fish and chips."

All of them wonderful, and very iconic! Though the Molly line I like better for the scene than the line. Great scene!

I like the look John gives Sherlock when he says "Forgive me."  :)  Love that whole scene! And Sherlock saying "Oh, everyone's saying hello to each other, how wonderful" as if it's the most unbearable thing in the world to hear people greeting each other

I have to mention a few more quotes from The Empty Hearse, too:

- Oh please, killing me, that's so two years ago!

- Bit mean springing it on you like that, could have given you a heart attack, probably still will, but in my defense it was very funny.

- I don't understand, I said I'm sorry, isn't that what you're supposed to do?

Oh yes, this one was brilliant   :lol5: Another nice little wink for the fans, I guess...

So, here's another one I really liked

John Watson: I don’t shave for Sherlock Holmes.

Mary Morstan[/b]: You should put that on a t-shirt.

I quite liked

Sherlock: I don't understand

John: Well that's a first

Yes, it's very much "them", isn't it? :)

Back to a previous episode, this little 'play with the words' is pretty funny:

Lestrade: If this woman's death was suspicious, why point it out?

Sherlock: Good samaritan.

Lestrade: Who press gangs suicide bombers?

Sherlock (nods): Bad samaritan.

A new favorite quote from The Sign of Three:

Sherlock: "I'm... chatting." *Casts a furtive glance at John* "Won't be trying that again."

Watching TSoT again now, and, perhaps more than anything, I love that the writers brought in this line:

John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss... So sorry again about that last one

Here's a good one from the latest episode:

"I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the unhappy."

Doesn't he say

in the face of the happy

?

I like to hear those words from Sherlock.

I thought so too and I like "happy" a lot better. Then I saw a transcript which said unhappy and I assumed - oh, he's talking about the fact that he didn't initially understand how devastated John was about his death. Well, too bad, still like the quote. When I have the DVD, I will definitely turn the subtitles on there and see what's really correct...

Funny, I like "unhappy" better, if it's in the context you mention :)

Well, I have looked at other transcripts by now (anything to distract me from the chores at hand...) and they all say "happy". Hurray! So, just because it is beautiful here's the quote again with what I choose to assume are the right words:

"I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the happy."

Whoever wrote that (whoever wrote the entire wedding speech including the telegrams part): I wish I could hug him or her (not sure that would be welcome, though, on second thoughts...)

Oh, and here is another one from The Sign of Three:

You are not a puzzle solver – you never have been; you’re a drama queen

That is exactly what I have yelled at Mr Holmes again and again while reading Doyle's stories!
