Maybe. I'd even say probably. But despite the headline, the article itself admits that it's just speculation.

As I understand it, even the BBC may not know for sure at this time. Has anyone heard whether Hartswood has delivered the finished episodes yet? The BBC won't set an official airdate till they have them in hand.

Interesting... but I know I've read that S5 was already plotted...

That's from the British GQ magazine, presumably an excerpt from a longer comment. I wouldn't make too much of it, since he, Martin Freeman, Steven Moffat, and Mark Gatiss have repeatedly and recently said they'd like to go on with the show indefinitely. And as you say, they've already plotted S5.

If BC was quoted accurately here and not taken out of context, it may simply be that Moftiss have now decided to give each series a satisfactory ending, just in case it might turn out to be the last. Not that they're planning it to be, but things do sometimes happen.

Radio Times has taken those quotes and added a lot of conjecture.

It's still out of context. Add the fact that the writer might not be that familiar with the background (how much research can you do having a tight schedule for your article?) and there is a huge space for getting things wrong.

Just keep calm and wait for S4. :D

In any case, I suppose this means that S4 will tie up a bunch of those loose ends we've been carping about.

Or not. :P

I may be the only fan who does not consider this bad news. I like the word "complete" in relation to my favorite TV series.

Me too, actually. Complete is still better than a slow death of decreasing quality.

But still, i am expecting some form of S5. Maybe they can make single movies instead of 3 piece series, movies that are closed entities, like... dunno... Indiana Jones or Terminator? It would be easier to manage, maybe TAB was a pilot version of that way of filming?

It seems everybody has much too much fun to just let it go entirely.

More like a rumor (whether good or bad) at this point. Wonder if Moftiss will make him retract it?

It would be really nice if the Moriarty thing were complete - is he dead or isn't he dead, and he keeps coming back... now, don't get me wrong, I love what Andrew Scott has done with him.  But maybe it's time to move on from that.

I agree!

Very definitely second the motion! From a rather sketchy villain in three stories in ACD to a whole three-part series is lifting even the Napoleon of crime to unprecedented heights! There are so many interesting villains in the stories, but we're stuck with a mathematical genius turned bad!

Yes, I think they could build all the 4 season around Moriarty's return (or not), but I hope they won't do that. I think I have had enough. Everything, but not Moriarty. And Sherlock's death, of course.

Thank you for the hint! German Amazon usually offers the British import before the series airs on German TV, so I might be able to pre-order soon as well. At least I hope so... Oh, I do hope they will have the download version available as soon as they did with The Abominable Bride! That would be very cool. I wonder who I would have to bribe / threaten to be sure. :P

I just realized that if I watch S4 on BBC, there will be a week long breaks between the episodes. I mean, WHAT? :o

You say the hiatus is bad... but how you survive this?

I never had to - until now.

Ya'all are not really going with the times! The Amazon pre-order has been available since the beginning of August, whereupon I placed it, along with some recent Star Trek:The Original books. For all those who order, please the Heavens the orders might arrive safely and in a timely fashion. As for watching it, I got an angle, so the moment the airdates are announced, I shall be clearing my diary: we are fans, first and foremost.

Mind you, I rewatched The Final Problem and The Empty House over the weekend, and was struck by how gag-ridden and full of distasteful jokes at the expense of the Granada series TAB is. Of course, I have come to realise that nothing is safe from Mr Moffat when it comes to turning a pound, but still, the actual setting rather than a prop with cascading water, beats the modernised-fake-Victorian spoof hands down. I wonder: were they trying to make a pastiche, after all?

Easy. You record each episode, then obsessively watch it over and over until the next one airs. Ta da! :D

Really? Gee, now I'll have to watch them so I'll get the jokes!

Aren't all of the episodes a pastiche? :d

Didn't we go through this already with season three? I know some people prefer to believe in conspiracies and lies, but for myself, I think they've been pretty straightforward on this subject the entire time ... they'd like to continue, but they don't know when, for how long, or if they can. We just have to deal with it.

By the way, JP, thanks for posting a few things, I've felt like I was visiting a ghost town this weekend! And now I'm going to be the one who disappears....

Right.

I do hope they wrap up the story in some way this season that has good potential to be an ending instead of another unbearable cliffhanger or a setup for another series that just never happens.

I think Sherlock Holmes is a character that is easy to revisit. Even if he died, nobody would believe it was for real anyway. If in ten years time of so they decide they want to continue (and can still get the team together), I think they could, even if they had brought the series to a satisfying end now.

Dear TOBY, contrary to Rosalie Williams, who started out in her fifties in the Granada Series, if they reprise it in ten years, the probability of Mrs Hudson still being their housekeeper is against statistics. Lee managed to play Saruman in the Hobbit, but not everybody lives past their 90th birthday. Let's hope they find time in two or three years' time!
