DVD/Blu-Ray Extras for Series 3

I understand the Series 3 discs are supposed to be released tomorrow (20 Jan).  It would be greatly appreciated if anyone who purchases them would provide a detailed list of the Extras which are included.  Most specifically, it would be incredibly helpful to learn if any commentaries were included on the discs, as they have been in the past.  As it stands, the sketchy details currently available have not listed any.

Please let us know one way or the other!

Sure thing! I should receive my DVDs in two days, and will be unwrapping them eagerly right away to find out exactly what's on them.

There are 3 special features on the dvd, but no commentaries. Personally, that doesn't bother me as I can't follow the commentaries very well anyway as they are rarely subtitled. Ariane DeVere on LJ has done transcripts of the dvd extras, and all of her transcripts are linked from here if you want to have a look.

If that is indeed true, then I am sincerely disappointed.  This series has been a letdown for me, and I wanted to hear them explain their thinking.  Apparently they won't be bothered anymore.  MORE disappointment from this series then. :(

Alex suspects they're omitting the commentaries because they need the disc space for three mini-documentaries (instead of just one, as in the past).  I think he's right, because I seem to recall somebody posting (on another thread, obviously) the names of three (?) special features.  We suspect they wanted three in order to flesh out PBS's new 2-hour no-cuts format -- in other words, we're guessing that PBS will air one little documentary after each of the episodes.

For those of you who aren't familiar with PBS's Sherlock history, here's a recap:  They aired seasons 1 and 2 in a 90-minute format, even though they ran 8 minutes of their own material, meaning that each episode they ran had 8 minutes cut out of it.  Apparently some people complained.  At any rate, this time they've blocked out a 2-hour slot, so they can run the uncut 90-minute episodes plus their 8 minutes, but then they need something like another 22 minutes of material.

Definitely no commentaries. The three extras are about 20 mins, 15 mins and 15 mins. Which may tie in with the 2 hour slot as someone has suggested.

Not sure about the disc space; but I suspect with Benedicts/Martins commitments; and the Gatiiss and Moffat output required over christmas they may not of had time.

I found the 'Shooting Sherlock' extra particularly interesting.

If the lack of commentaries is partly down to the sheer lack of time, you might find that if a special edition is releaed at some point, they might be on that.

Having watched the special features I think they're great! Really enjoyed the one called Shooting Sherlock and The Fall was also really entertaining. I just love listening to Gatiss and Moffat talking about the show because they clearly love it so much!

Really interested in buying the new bluray box-set (only have the standard DVD set for series 1-2) - however, I've heard that the mini-episode (Many Happy Returns) is not included in the box set ...? Which is a pity really, considering it's part of the whole package.

Thanks :)

You mean, Moftiss may be taking Peter Jackson lessons?  ;)

Y'know, that really is odd.  I haven't seen that listed for the single-season sets either.  It's not like they didn't already have it.  If it was a matter of disc space, they could have omitted some of the talking heads, in my opinion -- the ones where all they say is "look how terrific this show is" (yeah, I had kinda noticed that already).

Welcome to Sherlock Forum, Speedy's!  :welcome:

You don't run out of disk space nowadays. Not with what little is on this set.

No, they wanted to release it quickly. Incredibly quickly. So this is how they've done it. Very disappointing.

I'm really disappointed that there will be no documentaries. I'm still waiting for my dvds to be released in the US. You know what would be really great? Some deleted scenes and gag reels, but something tells me there won't ever be anything like that. :(

Deleted scenes, gag reels, or just a full table read would be great.

I'm really going to miss commentaries, too:(

This dvd set just seems so rushed (and thus inferior in every way to the previous series).

Ooh, what are you guys in the US getting??

Last night's little special after the episode was 'The Women of Sherlock'. Which featured interviews and scenes with Mary, Molly, Mrs. Hudson and Irene.
