DVD/Blu-Ray Extras for Series 3

My husband bought me Series 3 as part of my Valentine's Day gift (he never knows what I want, of course, but my daughter does and chooses for him.....)

Anyway, forgive me if this sounds stupid but are the "extras" the sort of behind-the-scenes things where they explain how the programmes were made? It is just that I never watch documentaries which explain how things were done. It's a bit childish of me but I don't want the magic to be destroyed by having special effects, etc, explained. Ironic, really, as I can analyse the stories to death but prefer to remain blissfully ignorant about the trickery involved in the filming. I accidentally saw an explanation of the scene in Star Trek where Zachary Quinto as Spock is in a volcano in his copper-coloured spacesuit and I couldn't get it out of my head when I saw the film.

If the extras are how-it-was-done stuff, I want to avoid them.

Really?  Oh, I think they're such fun!

Well, of course it's your call.

"The Fall" and "Shooting Sherlock" are definitely "how it was done" type things.  But I think you're okay with "Fans, Villains & Speculation."

It may be childish, but I am the same way! I never listen to audio commentaries for the same reason... Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I don't listen to audio commentaries, either....l just don't want to know how the puppet master pulls the strings. For instance, I once had a writing tutor who worked a lot in television and she said that, whenever you can't see the star's face, it isn't them. Stars are expensive, so directors have to use their time wisely and use stand-ins whenever possible. Not just for stunts but for ordinary scenes like driving a car, walking in the distance, even a hand reaching for a cup of tea.... I have never been able to watch a film without noticing these moments, even though I don't want to. When Sherlock is running at the beginning of TEH, I kept thinking "that won't be Benedict" and I was even doubtful that it was him in the torture scene until the hair was drawn back from his face.... These little points bug me, so I certainly don't want to know major behind-the-scenes spoilers!

Thanks, Pamela, for the info. I will avoid "The Fall" and "Shooting Sherlock" and confine myself to "Fans, Villains and Speculation."

Question.

There's now a box set of all three series ( I believe it may be called 'The Collection'). I read somewhere that it had "added extras". Does anyone know if they are different from the extras on the individual series box sets?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and will probably present myself later in the relevent topic (and please excuse my English for I am French). I have both the individual series box set in blu ray and the limited three series BBC exclusive blu ray box set. I haven't play the disks themselves, but as it is written on the individual cases they are identical to the individual series. Does anybody has asked the BBC to know why the mini-sode  is not included with the rest of series 3?

Hello vark and welcome to the forum!

To the best of my knowledge, yes, the exclusive set disks are the same as the individually sold ones, just stuffed in that black box together with the goodies. As to why the BBC didn't include Many Happy Returns, that is a baffling decision indeed.

I sure wish it was!  Many Happy Returns was wonderful, top quality.  It just doesn't make sense that they didn't include it.

Hello, vark -- welcome to Sherlock Forum! :welcome:

As Fox said, you've asked an excellent question.  :(  We're all pretty bewildered about that.  But thanks for answering mangopony's question!

Yes, thanks Vark.I think we all expected the mini episode to be in there. Perhaps we should petition Moftiss to release a special series of DVDs/blu-rays with just the Christmas episode and a all the outtakes and deleted scenes from the 1st 3 series! I love outtakes etc on the special features!

Is this where we would talk about the contents of those extras?

Did anyone catch that Amanda Abbington said that in the first two episodes she didn't know where her character was going in HLV?  So that if anyone would think back to anything she said or did in the previous two and might think "that's why she said that," no, she was actually in all innocence then.  Interesting!

The BBC limited boxed set has been advertised as numbererd. The only thing I have found in mine that coulb be it is this sticker, does anybody owning this set has a different numbered sticker?

Speaking of the BBC, Sherlockology has a code (SHERLOCKED) that gets you 10 per cent off Sherlock-related items at their shop. Only valid till Friday midnight, though.

Austria is (they sent me my blu-ray box), and if they know where to find my tiny country, I have high hopes for the rest of them ;).

I'm so sorry to bother, but can someone please send me a link to those Extra-Feature (The Fall & Shooting Sherlock) since they aren't available anymore. :(

In Germany the new season won't be buyable till June

Thanks a lot in advance

The BBC seems to be a believer in Better Late Than Never, because a Series 3 Special Edition is rumoured to be in the works, to be released on November 3, on both Blu-Ray and DVD.

Featured are all the extras we've been clamouring for, like Many Happy Returns, an audio commentary and outtakes.

*sigh* I'd add a paragraph about cash grabbing and forcing us to buy their stuff twice but since I know that I'll be getting this anyway I kinda feel like a hypocrite.

I have yet to find another site to confirm this. So please file this under "rumours" for the time being.

Something tells me my current edition may become a Christmas present to someone else.
